How do you balance the co-op session so it doesn't feel tacked on in regards to gameplay that isn't focussed on combat? What happens when the host wants to walk around and talk with NPC's? Do you make the quest structure and the conversation system even more streamlined to make it less passive for the co-op partners who aren't able to do anything during story segments. What about when Shep wants to go from deck to deck on the Normandy having conversations with NPC's? What does the second, or third player do then?

Having to consider all of these factors DETRACTS from the focus on the single player.

Hemm... I don't know? How did Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's Gate worked again? Oh yeah, that's right, cooperation and teamwork.

Seriously people, how hard do you need to think about this?

I think the only way that MP could work and not take away from the SP experience is to have the MP be a separate mode where the player goes to a Pinnicle Station type environment and can run combat sims wherein the AI squadmates could be replaced with co-op partners. However, this still involves development time in building the gameplay modes, maps, balancing combat for MP, and working on the ever important NET CODE (although since this is an UNreal engine game some of that work might already be done).

Pinnacle Station was really the point where I just thought "Mass Effect would really be a lot better if it had multiplayer in it."

I mean, look at it: in SP it's boring and annoying because you all you do is shoot stuff while dealing with the brain-damaged AI. Now imagine how much better it would be if you could get someone with an actual friend to help you on it, each one of you taking a role in a tactical shootout. Wouldn't that have been a lot better, instead of the exercise in frustration that was trying to get your squadmates to follow a given plan that you had in mind?

I think MP in any form for ME 3 would be a REAL F***CKING DISSERVICE to the fans who have supported this game since ME1 and who are looking forward to a great SP experience.

Since, of course, you'll be FORCED to play in multiplayer. Because as we all know, games with MP on it can never be played on your own, neglecting all those people who love to scream to their PC/console in frustration because they just got killed due to AI idiocy.

Ever used Vent in Pugs in WoW?

The only game I ever played that was equally immersive AND challenging at the same time in both SP and MP was Diablo. Yeah, I know, Activision is now working on Diablo 3, but since it's Activision, I can't say I have very high expectations for it.. Making a game equally good in SP and MP is hard, to say the least. I can live with some MP game in the Mass Effect universe (though I probably wouldn't play it). But I'd rather NOT see ME3 as a multiplayer.

I think Co-op would be great fun, but the power-wheel would have to be scrapped. You just couldn't have two people constantly pausing a fight to use their powers (on the xbox, PC players could hotkey).

But it should ONLY BE CO-OP if anything. Adding TDM or anything along those lines would kill it for me, what with balancing the classes and such.

edit/ If anyone ever tried out Fable 2s Co-op, I think they'll know where im coming from. Its just for fun, you want to do all the main story on your own (as their generally fantastic anyway, and you want it to be YOUR story), but the dull side-quests are far more enjoyable with a friend tagging along!

Bioware has said many times Mass Effect is a single-player story/games. They devote all their resources to crafting good stories and gameplay, not multiplayer.

Actually to answer your question, I asked the very same thing back on the old forums quite a while ago and got a responce Chris Priestly and he said:

(Paraphrase) Priestly: "Mass Effect is strictly a single player trillogy"

Unfortunatly I can't find that post, so i can't site that.  But I found a few others that says the similar thing.

they can do what 2k did and hire a team to make multi-player while the main group focuses on the main game.

+ it's a good idea to make money. the hardcore fans will have their single player game. and also bioware will get some of the "RAWR ME SMASH" gamers with the multi-player.

and it's not realy up to us(the fans) it's up to the people that make the game, and having a more wide spread fan base(single player & multi-player) means more money for them and so they can get cool kick ass cars and houses.

I don't think so. if they wanted to do multiplayer they would close out the trilogy and make a new series in the mass effect world.

Obviously, co-op story mode would not work too well. If any of the ME games were to have any form of co-op it would have to be completely disconnected from the main story.

What Bioware could do, though, would have a seperate set of missions - or even a whole campaign - balanced solely on co-op, individual from the mainstory. You could implement some interesting stories through this as well.

In regards to PvP, there's quite a bit of potential there, but there'd need to be quite an overhaul of how the classes function in order to prevent it from not being completely and massively irritating. CC is the main cause of this for PvP games, and too much of it can really kill the game.

Odd. According to all the other stereotypers out there, that's what Mass Effect fans already are. They're "hype lemmings" and "GoW fanboys" that "care more about graphics than actual gameplay" (this last line was read on the Dragon Age board on this very site, no less :?) and are "too used to FPS to be able to grasp even the most basic of RPG mechanics" so they just play this "dumbed down shooter with some stats tacked on".

See what basic stereotypes do to you? They make you look like you don't know a thing about what you're talking about. And that's just demeaning.
