ME2 - How do you play your Adept?

Good ol' Shepard the Adept, only gets better as the game progresses!

I love the music, but poor Kate. She doesn't have a clue.

I'm curious. Did you take Heavy/Area throw before heavy warp? And Does that adept have shockwave?

First thing I did was max out Pull Field, then Heavy Warp, then Nemesis (Power Damage?).  Area Throw followed with some Singularity on the way...  not quite sure since I retrained right after Horizon.  Had Shockwave, but found the AoE Pull/Throw to be fine with half the cooldown, so now she has zero points in it.  She'll get one at lvl 30.

Edit:  Nawel is an arabic name, hence the music.  Also happens to be the name of the singer...  although I think she spells hers, Nawal.

I strongly considered it, but I've been playing with shotguns a lot.  Felt good to bring out the old AR.

I should note here that the Horizon portion of the vid is totally how I used to play on my first Adept, back before this thread.  Even on Veteran, I was having trouble.  It's why I give so much credit where it is due.

That music sounds waaaay to cheery for all the destruction that's goin on in that video.  The music also makes me feel like less of a man, but.. I can't...stop...listening!

damn you, damn you to hell sir!

Gatsby, regarding the husk-related sections, you seem to strongly advocate using throw due to its short cooldown time and instant-kill ability.  Wouldn't pull be equally effective, i.e., doesn't pull have the same cooldown and same instant-kill?

Is there something about throw that I don't know?  (The only thing I can think of is that perhaps the projectile flies faster, but somehow I doubt that.)

Yes absolutely. I didn't have area pull at the time while I did have heavy throw, so thats what I decided to use. Although, when fighting abominations, I think throw is a little better because the impact of a throw sending a abomination into a wall will sometimes detonate it, which is pretty nice, instead of it rising up in the air near you, getting shot from your allies, and then detonating where you might get hit.

Didn't consider the abominations, good point.  It seems I've been underrating throw, only using it to launch a single ragdoll enemy when a warp explosion is unnecessary (per your recommendation), or the occasional environmental kill (Grunt recruitment comes to mind).

Nice video, the music was strangely appropriate.  I see that you too are also a big throw-er.

I'm going to try Shotgun adept :o

Of course, I'll be saving on the far side so if I find it to be lacking, I can always go back to AR :D

I'm actually surprised you guys liked the music...  I thought it was kind of a gamble, but hey, good to know most ME2 players are openminded about that stuff.

I don't like that music very much at all, but the editing and pacing of the video combined with all of the physics manipulation (unintentional humor), incendiary ammo (dancing) and the dark-hair-bunned female hero (sprinting, vaulting, gesturing) gave it all a Bollywood kind of groove.

I cringed when it first came on, but was nodding along within seconds.

[Edit]: I only mention this because it seems like you care (as opposed to busting your chops for its own sake), but my only critique was at 1:25, she sits in cover for almost 10 seconds before vaulting over and tearing it up.  Maybe edit out the time spent in cover?

Yeah, I would have vaulted over much sooner, but the rockets just kept coming!  I didn't want to edit it out though since it was so soon into that encounter.  They can't all be perfect.

About the music, I don't mind if it isn't your style.  It can be hard to get into and I honestly don't really care that much...  I just thought it appropriate because the singer and the character have the same name.  Oh, and just for future reference, Bollywood and Arabic music are very different...  just adding that in there because it's like saying all games or music or movies are the same.

It occurred to me that referencing Bollywood would probably sound ignorant because I had no idea what language was used in the song, but that was the best way I could describe my impression.  I meant no offense.

In any case, nice work.

I might resurrect Adam for a NG+ run, with bonus powers (not reave, not dominate, probably energy drain or warp ammo). The planned NG+ build:

Warp lvl 2

Heavy Throw or Throw Field (haven't decided) lvl 4

Wide Singularity lvl 4

Pull Field Lvl 4

Shockwave 0 (I cannot for the life of me make this power work well)

Nemesis Lvl 4

E-Drain Lvl 1-3 (I'm going to test to see if there really is that much of a difference between 1 and 3 when it comes to shield regen).

 Leveling Guide: http://averagegatsby...y-leveling.html

I've finally got a level by level guide on what to do with your adept, if you want to play the pure/gatsby way. I think this build is very capable, but feel free to comment on the blog or reply here.

I'm going to be using this new blog more extensively, covering content I can't cover via videos. Read at your leisure.

A good build that has worked well for me is:
Unstable Warp Lvl 4
Heavy Throw Lvl 4
Wide Singularity Lvl 4
Pull Lvl 2
Shockwave Lvl 1 (use it very rarely because of the armor issue)
Bastion Lvl 4
Energy Drain Lvl 3 (good for boosting barrier and lasts like 15-20 seconds).

1 spare point.

Why Unstable? The AOE effect for Heavy is plenty large enough, and enemies in the AOE of heavy warp take the full damage of the explosion. Unstable warp won't outright kill enemies but heavy will.

Also, this is a pre-horizon NG + build. After horizon I'm going to respec in Heavy Warp.

Thanks yet again for the guide, finally beat the Collector ship this weekend (still took a long time).

Some especially key tips:
1.  The quick warp-pull-warp on the first Collector platform to take out the first wave was so damn important.  I was just slow-playing on earlier attempts and Harbinger tore me up.  Clearing that first platform before "assuming control" was clutch (I brought the Vindicator with warp ammo).
2.  Praetorian was easy this time.  I was always so preoccupied with him that I never thought to prioritize the Husks/Collectors, and then I'd get overwhelmed/flanked.  This time I just let him wander around unmolested while clearing out the room. Once it's just the big bug, great tip to think ahead and "commit" to cover (same applies for the Horizon fight).
3.  Cover point on the next-next Collector fight.  The split room fight where you advise taking cover on the right corner of the left room (top of a ramp) to prevent Collectors from taking the "far left" cover spot.  (Vague, but that's the best I can remember.)  Still took a few attempts, but sure enough, every time I failed to hold that corner I got overwhelmed.
4.  Running past the last husk rush (by this time I've died too often to want to kill them for completion's sake).

Suicide MIssion tonight, maybe I can finally get this damn achievement.

This should be made a sticky, after watching your vids/thisme8's new vids of Adept characters. I'm having a blast through it all. A few notes... that you should make on the OP...

- Singularity is great sure, it's great for staggering someone till you rip through his defense and BAM... Warp detonation.

- However, for pure damage, pull works better due to the much faster cooldown. But this is just for damage.

- Dominate works well for an Adept, it's amazing the crowd control abilities added to the Adept class with Dominate. And, it's hilarious - dominating a 'heavy' trooper is hilarious!!!! Especially when two are right next to each other, watching enemies blow themselves up with ROCKETS - never gets old xD

- For squaddies, I've noticed for some reason squaddie warp aint so good. It's rather better to take someone like Jack compared to Miranda. Since Jack can set up much better scenes for warp detonation (at level 3, she has 9 second duration, and 9 sec cooldown).

Doing loyalty missions now atm, reaper IFF later... quite far in the game so far. Took sniper training on the collector ship. Doing quite well.

I really wanted to bump this thread. It's a great guide. I recently started my Adept and I seem to enjoy this class more and more. It's a powerful and tactical class. Never had so much fun through the game then as an Adept imo.

I watched your videos and it encouraged me to try levelling Adept to how you level it and i must say that, are you sure that you are playing on insanity difficulty because overload never takes all shields away, maybe half or 1/3 but never, EVER all of it.

I have also noticed that your shields go down FAR slower then mine, so i am confused how you are able to do what you do in the videos, cause i surely can't.

I love watching the videos you do, but whenever i try to do what you do with the classes, i never, EVER get the same result, not even close. :(

Back to soldier for me, i guess.

Same here.

I've tried to do the same thing he did in the Save The Crates mission. I think i lasted about 30 seconds before the first YMIR tore through my squad then me :(

I never get the same results as those who make these videos. One thing that hinders my own attempts is that I'm simply not a very good player. Get me in a multiplayer combat situation, I think the default order for me is to keep respawning so that the enemy can keep killing me while my team does the important stuff.

The videos do give me some good ideas on how I can play the class that I probably will never have figured out on my own. However, it's not going to make it instantly easy for me nor guarantee I will like it. I'm in the middle of an Engineer playthrough. I'm doing alright. I thought I would enjoy the class immensely, but I'm discovering it's simply not for me. I enjoyed playing a Vanguard even though I did much worse with that class.

As for an Adept, I started the playthrough to see if I could reach the point where I found it all powerful as I did during ME1. I also wanted to see if I could get the same results with Singularity as I would see in the videos. I did end up with a reasonably powerful Adept, and I did use Singularity liberally. But not quite like I saw in the videos. Enjoyed it, though.

Its impressive just how good you are.... you playing ME2 is almost an exact replica of how it was for me in the original ME.....

Im curious to see what you could really do with a Sentinel... Id be incredibly interested to hear your tips and tricks for Sentinels.

I like the info in this guide, but I would like to point out that I am simply not good enough to do The Arrival's fight for your life all five waves on Insanity. I've switched powers (to Stasis from Energy Drain) in order to try and finish it. (I cannot deal with the Ymir backed up by the fresh wave of troops. It closes, forces me out of cover, and the troops flank and decimate me.)

Other than that I'm fine with the rest of the game. I have had some tough spots, and some heavy reloads, but I'm on track for doing a 100% achievement complete run on Insanity. (I lost my save files in a failed backup, so I'm redoing my Adept's run as he is my primary.)
