I am picking this game up Thursday.  I once played a few minutes of a friends game, and it intimidated the hell out of me.  That short play test and some stuff a co-worker told me has me a little worried.
My co-worker tels me that I need to set up my party like I would in an MMO.  I will need the tank, healer, and DPS.  This does not really worry me.  It seems obvious.  But he tells me that I will need to basically babysit my squad and pretty much choose every single action they take (may make a difference that he palyed on PC and I will be playing on the 360).  I have read that there are real differences in gameplay based on what you play it on, with the PC being more tactical and the 360 being more action oriented.  I prefer the more action oriented flavor, but I am open to the tactical side too.
Is this the case?  Can I expect to be chosing every single action my whole squad makes in combat?

A couple more questions:

Is it a bad idea for a new player to choose a mage?  Are they too squishy and hard to keep standing?
Also, is there a great online resource where I can waste the next two work days planning my characters?  Something that goes into great detail the differences between classes and all the great skills and abilities available based on how I build my character?  Sort of like WoWhead for Warcraft?

I fully expect to love this game....but the idiot side of me spends way too much time worrying about this stuff.  I imagine this will be one of the rare games that I always hang onto and pull out to play over many times in the future.  Weird thing....most of those games are made by Bioware.

Thanks in advance.

Mages are the best for beginners..that was my first choice. Also, I never had to babysit squad and I played with 3 mages and a "tank" I beat the whole game that way lol.

Play on normal mode the first time through and you will be telling your friend that he's full of it in no time at all.

You could play it this way, but you don't really have to. Every one of those is replaceable (though a healer is nice to have if you don't want to be drinking lots of potions).

Again, you can, but you don't have to. If you set the difficulty to Casual, you probably won't have to do it at all. If you set it to Nightmare, it will be necessary in a significant fraction of battles. It also depends to an extent on how good you are at using the tactics system. And yes, there is significantly less micromanagement on consoles.

No. Mages are fairly powerful as long as your spell selection is not pathologically bad.

Well, there's the wiki. It tells you most of what you need to know for character building -- just watch out for spoilers.

EDIT: The spacing of the quotes was awful...
