I've been playing as a Sentinel since my last 100% on Mass Effect 1, my first run of Mass Effect 2, and now my Insanity run of Mass Effect 2. I'm ready to dive one way or the other for my ME1 thru ME2 playthough that I plan to do after completing insanity. Here's what I'm thinking so far:
Adept: Biotics definitely offer better combat oppurtunities than Engineer, but in ME1 I'll be forced to sacrafice my extra perk to Sabotage in order to get that Salarian data on Virmire.
Engineer: Combat options are more limited, but since sabotage will already have been taken care of I can use my perk for a weapon in ME1.
Adept Vs. Engineer (ME1 and 2)

I can't say I agree, all your biotics do the same thing as long as your enemy has armor. And once the armor has worn off the enemy is basically dead anyway so you never have the chance to have fun with your cool abilities. I'm still wondering why I even play the adept now...

How are combat options limited as an engineer?
Engineer has sabotage, overload, dampening, neural shock, and AI Hacking. Sabotage, overload, and dampening can also be turned into tech mines. I wish dampening was in ME2.

Dampening would have little effect, since the barriers and armor (immunity) are already up. As far as blocking offensive moves, too few enemies in ME2 are biotics or techs to justify it.
I think after reading a bit more about the adept, I'm going to go with the engineer. Though it seems like the Engineer has fewer options since AI hacking is useless in some fights, when you get right down to it, all of the Adept powers except for warp are pointless, whereas with Engineer you have the combat drone (distraction/actual crowd control), incinerate (armor), and overload (shields). And while warp has an effect on armor, it's not nearly as effective as incinerate. You add in reave and the Engineer can actually break down more types of defenses than the Sentinel. You know it's funny; but the tech abilites in this game actually surpass the biotic abilities in terms of crowd control.
Now to decide between shotgun and assault rifle... and beat insanity...

I'm not all too familiar with an Engineer for Mass Effect 1, considering that my two playthroughs were Soldier and Adept. However, I find them to be extremely effective in Mass Effect 2. The class brings a lot to the table, yet is limited based on the squad mates you bring with. Their ability to destroy armor and shields effectively makes them valuable, espacially in higher difficulties where almost every target has a shield and armor. I played as an Infiltrator my first two runs and now I am playing an Engineer. I must say, this is the most fun I've had in both ME1 and ME2. I am more pleased with the fact that Engineers are so underrated.
