My next playthrough will be as a Soldier on Hardcore and I'm wondering what people think is, in their opinion, the best advanced weapon option for a Soldier out of the Revenant and the Widow.  A friend of mine loves LMGs on every game he plays but hated the Revenant because he couldn't hit crap all with it and wishes he'd gone for the Widow instead.

What have your experiences with these weapons been like?

In my experience, slam some sort of ammo power on the Revenant, I went with AP, fire in bursts and your on the path to victory ;) Especially if you take Miranda, her passives really improve your chances : )

Revenant is a beast with the AR accuracy upgrade.

The clip size is a godsend

I tried both. I enjoyed the Widow much more than the Revenant. Like your friend said, the Revenant is very inaccurate. I prefer the burst rifle (can't remember name) because it will almost always get head shots therefore inflicting more damage in a shorter amount of time than the LMG. This means you spend less time out of cover. I found this very important playing on insanity. I loved the Widow. It is very satisfying to kill most enemies with one shot when you pop out of cover. That's just my 2 cents though.

as much fun as sniping as the soldier is, the Revenant is an incredible weapon that no soldier should pass up. it does incredible damage (ShadowPlay is right, take armor piercing rounds and stuff just melts), fires insanely fast, carries a TON of ammo in the clip and extra. it's only slight downside is that it is not particularly accurate past 20m, but that's why you have other guns! you will truely appreciate the power of the Revanant when you use Adrenaline Rush and fire away at close range on a Scion or YMIR mech, it just obliterates them.

i suggest taking the widow only if you really enjoy longer ranged combat with your soldier, in which case using the Vindicator and the Widow will give you an advantage.

Revenant easily. With large clip and adrenaline rush, you can do far more damage than Widow. Not even close.

Well, let's weigh the options; the Revenant is good because it fills any range from short to medium-long, has a good rate of fire and like everyone here has already said, rips through just about anything. The Widow packs more punch per shot, sure, but it has one round magazine -- really bad waste when you're in Adrenaline Rush and at the range you need to blow something's head off any of the other sniper rifles do the job just fine enough (Viper is fun, makes most of that adrenaline rush time).

So basically, Revenant is your best friend; and in the more frantic levels it's a godsend since crowd control is very important.

If you're playing hardcore or insanity, the Soldier is the only class that can get both the Widow and the Geth Pulse Rifle. That's a pretty nice combination.

I'd take the Revenant as well. As the others have said, it provides a lot of ammo per clip, deals a good amount of damage over just about any range that you'll encounter if you get the accuracy upgrade (a godsend for the Revenant that almost completely covers the mediocre to low accuracy) and it fires very fast. Get the right ammo type and you've got yourself a jack-of-all-trades weapon for every situation. It's especially useful if you get swarmed, e.g. by husks.

Apart from that the Viper is a good sniper rifle, especially for adrenaline rush because it has such a large clip size so the Widow is not really needed as a soldier.

I say go for the widow or claymore. I havent started a new game+ yet, but it seems The Revenant is only useful once you get the accuracy upgrade which is fairly late into the game and if you are planning to start a ng+ you start without upgrades which will yet again gimp the revenant until you get the accuracy upgrade. The claymore and widow on the other hand are useful even in the beginning without upgrades.

it depends on your playstyle. claymore shotgun is a lot of fun and so is emptying 80 round clips from the Revenant into harbingers at point blank range. i personally don't like the widow sniper because it is slow and has too little ammo. the autosniper you get in dantius towers is my favorite sniper rifle in game.

It depends, I like all 3 weapons but for different classes. The Renevant is actually a good gun, which is my preferred weapon as a solider with the accuracy upgrade. Widow is perfect for the infiltrator, because they get to slow down time by default while aiming down the sniper scope, so it isn't a waste of adrenaline rush. Claymore is quite awesome for a vanguard when using charge, but you might want to take the rapid fire shotgun instead if facing more than 3 enemies.

You can actually get the accuracy upgrade as soon as you can get to illium, which is like after horizon. if you have zaeed dlc. you get assault rifle damage from mordin and tali recruit, shop on illium and zaeed loyalty (spoiler)

if you choose not to save the workers.

I love them both. With all the upgrades the Revenant is accurate enough to chew through everything. The widow kills everything with a head shot.

Its a matter of personal preference on the difficulties below Insanity. On Insanity neither is that great imho.
Vindicator Battle Rifle and Viper Sniper Rifle are to be prefered.

I've only tried the Revenant, and with a bunch of assault rifle upgrades plus the accuracy upgrade,  I was able to kill anything at close to medium ranges. Sometimes it even mowed down multiple enemies that were in close proximity, which was just downright awesome. I picked warp ammo for my bonus power, which made it even more deadly.

I even used it to beat the skeleton reaper thing.

The Revenant has a base (no upgrades, no powers, all bullets hit the body at default range) DPS (per mag) of 204 while the Widow's is 156. Add to that the dmg bonus the Revenant gets to armor, barriers, and shields and it's clealy the better all-round weapon. The Widow only excells in certain, very specific situations. For example, if you're an Infiltrator with cloak up and pop a headshot on a target with no shields or barriers, you'll do crazy damage. But how often will you be in that situation against a target that actually requires crazy damage to kill? Thus, Revenant+Viper is probably a better combo than Vindicator+Widow.

Sorry, I'm confused.
What are you talking about?
Do you think that the base damage of the Widow is only 154 ? Base damage without any upgrades is 363 for the widow per shot and the Revenant does 20 something in damage per shot.

I really hope you don't compare magazine sizes, with over all damage? In all honesty it is silly to compare damage with those two weapons,
they are not in the same category and work best at completely opposite
distance on the battlefield.
You don't snipe with an LMG and you don't use a sniper up close.

It all depends how you play, in what selection to choose.
If you like to kill in one hit most of the time from distance choose the godly Widow.
If you like the  feel of a lot of ammo and a machine gun that can level any enemy close to midrange , go with Revenant.
As a soldier I would prefer the Revenant since it is exlusive to the class and I already have a Sniper rifle.
As an infiltrator I would go with Widow since it is the pinnacle of destruction for an Infiltrator.

I chose the Widow for my first soldier playthrough, and never regretted it. I have a very tactical playstyle - in fact, I bind my squadmate command keys to my mouse buttons 4 and 5 (I have a Logitech G5 gaming mouse). I do a lot of fire and maneuver type work, placing my squad into cover, facing them head on or if possible, making an L shape so that they can have intersecting fields of fire. I found that it was especially effective like that because the squad would engage small targets and keep them busy, while I used the Widow to concentrate on priority threats - especially those pesky YMIR mechs, where just a few well placed shots would bring them down before they became a real threat. Especially if you headshot the YMIRs, then you often kill more enemies with the resulting nuclear blast. Throw up an adrenaline rush, and you can take out enemy heavy troops or vanguards and such.

I was intending to pick up the Revenant on a second playthrough, thinking that a Widow and a Revenant at the same time would be an ungodly combination of mass destruction. I was very sadface when I found out I couldn't have both. I'm starting another playthrough with my old ME1 import, so I can get the Revenant. The codex was right - the victor of the battle is usually the one who can achieve fire superiority, that's why the geth invented thermal clips. I'm figuring that the LMG would be more conducive to attrition battles from cover - and on higher difficulties, I'm in cover all the time.

My conclusion:

Widow is the ultimate problem solver for tough enemies at long range. But, due its low rate of fire and limited ammo, you'd better be good at using it. Thus it is limited to very specific engagements. But in those, it excels, and can end a battle before it even gets difficult. Set up your team to provide suppressing fire, find some cover, adrenaline rush and headshot to your heart's content. Pair with Geth Pulse Rifle (if on Hardcore or insanity).

Revenant is much better for pure fire superiority - it might not have the precision of the Widow, but will whittle down enemies. In the words of Kal'Reegar, "kill them with bug bites." Most likely, you will successfully kill all enemies in any engagement before ammo even becomes an issue. Pair up with the rapid firing Viper, which can put down a lot of damage (equivalent to the Widow?) in the same time it takes to fire the Widow once. Use adrenaline rush to maximize precision.

I've seen this thread half a hundred times. The Revenant is THE weapon for a soldier, and is a powerhouse once you get the AR Accuracy upgrade.

I tested out both, and on Hardcore the Widow was nice, but just not as handy as the Rev. Sure some say the Geth Pulse Rifle is good, but I found it really lacking after shields were down.

Insanity calls for widow + vindicator.

Rev is nice sure, but the widow is the ultimate problem solver, and you can't get both weapons.
