Sometimes I've Found that sometimes a character will die for no reason what-so-ever. For instance i sent legion in through the tubes and we're closing that damn door and he's gone. i have loyalty and everything. it's very confusing. And yes i also resolved the fight between tali and him, positive for both.

Can Anyone Explain This?

The fire team leader is the key for the tech vent crawler's survival.

If the fire team leader is not loyal or someone ideal for the job (Miranda, Garrus, Zaeed, or Jacob), it doesn't matter who the tech is. That squaddie will die.

if the tech expert is not a tech expert, he will take longer opening the door.

How is Tali not a Tech Expert?  She's a Quarian, after all.

Also another key for the Tech is how long you take to open the Vents. If you don't open the Vents fast enough, I think the Specialist will die even if the correct Fire Team leader is chosen. Even if you get the Specialist through the Vents, If the "Specialist in Danger" HP bar drops to low they will die even if you get them through the Vents and have the correct Fire Team Leader.

I personally believe taking too long getting to the vents gives the tech less time at the end too. Tali didn't have any trouble with the doors for me, but I also was a biotic charging fool getting to those vents in a timely fashion.

bolded. That was the reason of my post. You need a tech expert for the vents, not just anyone.

its all on how you talk to them at the end if you use pargon as in the nicce guy way use garrus as second team leader tail for the door and samara as bonic. also before when ur talking about going in use the create a disdration dont use "there must be another way" or "blow the door in" if you do this the leave nobody behind achevement will be yours

I would bank on that you pissed her off during the Geth confrontation. Unless you take a neutral stance, it doesn't matter what their loyality rating is, the person you sided against, will die. That's how I got Legion killed. It works the same way with the Jack/Miranda confrontation.

Ahh, I see.  Yeah I had Zaeed as the leader of the fire team.  Kudos.

What I want to know is, how does the game choose who dies in the shield overload (which happens if you don't acquire the upgrade from Tali)? It's supposedly either Legion or Tali... For me, Legion died. Both were loyal. Perhaps its random?

kinda. If jack is unloyal she will fail on the biotic field, and killing your second squadmate. lol legion..."critical error".

sorry but thats not correct.

i was able to get everyone home safely and i did NOT have miranda loyal. i sided with jack and was never able to win back mirandas loyalty.

i also did NOT have zaeeds loyalty...and he made it through just fine.

all im saying is that you do not have to have squad mates loyalty to have them survive. what you do need to do is be smart about who you use for the special asighnments in the end.

i didnt have mirandas loyalty...so i used garus as team leader both times. i had both jack and samara loyal, but i chose jack for the biotic...simply cus i like her better.

again...you dont have to have everyones loyalty to keep them alive.

Try Jacob instead of Garrus.

Right....I should have added: all things being equal, meaning if they (your squad, all of them) are loyal.

he prolly got legion killed by using him on the vents. Any unloyal character if given an assignment, will most likely die.

Well in my defense, my statement didn't say you had to have them all loyal.  I was just saying that in my situation, I had squad all loyal, I sided with Tali in regards to her argument with Legion.  I made it through the vent opening run with plenty of time and good "health" on the tech bar, and legion took a bullet in his lil' eye when closing the door.  He didn't make it.

I agree with you, you have to pick the right people for the job as well, no doubt, but I think some early decisions might be a determining factor on who lives and who doesn't during the suicide mission, no matter who you pick to do certain jobs.

I would say it's Tali/Legion encounter in AI room. I helpet Tali in that matter and chose Legion in the final mission and he ended the same way that Tali did for you.

Ok this is weird. After completing my first playthrough samara was not loyal and she died. Just finished my second where both Jack and Tali were not loyal but yet they both lived giving me the "No one left behind" achievement.... ?

I had them both under the biotic shield (samara) before the final boss and Garrus as leader all the way through.

Last time Miranda lead both times and I didn't really use Samara at any point. So I can only speculate that using the squad member may do something.

all survived...even the normandy crew. Everyone loyalty was there, except Jack,..but jack also becomes loyal if you have enough paragon points that allow you to say that it was "just lip service" dialog..then she becomes loyal as well.

Tech: Legion

1st strike team leader: Garrus

Biotic: Samara

2nd team leader: Miranda

I did the last attack with Mianda and Legion, did it with Miranda and Tali as well and all survived.

I did a run-through with Tali through the vents and she acted like she didn't know what the hell she was doing, saying the door was stuck. Then she got hit in the head with a rocket and died :(. Maybe because I was pursuing a romance with her and then realized I still wanted Ashley and broke it off with her. Could that be the reason? Anyway I redid that part with Legion through the vents and no one died. All members were fully loyal, by the way.

The last two vents are time sensitive, you don't open them fast enough and the specialist dies. Period. Also there is evidence that if you don't clear the room completely before you hit the last vent they die too.

I don't think there should be a problem if you get all possible upgrades, ensure everyone is loyal and use the right person for the job. I used Tali for the vents and was terrified she'd get shot like Legion (loyal) did on my first play-through. It makes me wonder if opening the vents really quickly makes a difference, as second time around I made sure they were open before the collectors were cleared and she came out fine. Having a loyal Garrus as team leader helps too I think. Of course, a nice resolution in the AI room will help matters no end.

Eh, I got pretty close to the ven timer running down and Tali still lived. So long as you get to the vents BEFORE the bar runs down you should be fine I still think its a combination of loyalty and who the squad leader is. It is critical that the squad leader call for suppressing fire that protects the tech and the rest of the squad.

I had Miranda as my second fireteam leader. She wasn't loyal, but survived. She did, however, die at the end, when it randomly showed a picture of her corpse.

i beat the game three times and have every crew member alive. i used the paragon speech at both time once on the ship and the other in side the base i used garrus a the second team leader tail for the tunnels and samara for bionics. also before going in to the collators base choose "create a distraction not "there must be another way" or "blow the door" then send either tail mordin or jake back with the crew. finsh it up by asking all the qusetions after u release the crew chosse garrus again then choose samara after u make it past this part ur ready for the finale fight for the team to take with u chosse either tail mordin or jack because in truth they are your weaker members and ur going to want ur strong ones defending the door beat the game and then youll get the no one left behind achevement trust me on this i done walk five friends though the end. if u need help hit me up on XBL gamer tag is RedDevilChild82 and ill walk anyone of you though it

I have had this happen to me and after reloading everything went the way it was suppose too.  The only thing I could think of from my first try was maybe I was taking too long to get to the valves.  Even though the timer hadn't run out there were a few times it was close.  The replay mission option rules for this very thing.
