Moriarty is already down with it as long as it's a new character and avoidable in a clear manner.

It depends on the motivation for the omission. In the first game I think the reason was obvious - it would have made every single LI and every single human party member bisexuals, and that would have just been too much for the marketing department's or audience's sensibilities. In the second game it's a bigger question, but I still consider it most likely that the demography wasn't considered significant enough to carter. That's why I think this kind of activism is important. It shows that people care about the option, and behind every active, loud community member there are potentially hundreds of silent gamers who are dissapointed, but not inclined to complain.

I bet the first game's cut content was for more drab reasons. If they were concerned that all love interests would be bisexual, that concern would be something addressed in the planning stages. Not after dialogue's been recorded, animations programmed and the like.

The reason to remove the content from the second game could very well have been because the content was cut from the first, who's to say?

It probably varies by genre and choices offered. Bioware has been previously known as gay friendly company, as I mentioned earlier, and could probably get higher than average percentage of gay gamers by giving the option a chance; perhaps even up to 5% of the player base, as I estimated, albeit rather optimistically. The straight gamers who play as opposite sex, such as myself most definately outnumber the actually gay gamers, and will probably be a bigger incentive for adding in the option.

There are quite a few reasons to add the content, to please the fanbase or to reach out to a wider crowd, but I think that, ultimately, the reason BioWare includes this content is because they want to. Other games that feature romances rarely have the option, but it's not like they suffer for it. Obsidian's KotOR II certainly had no alternative romances but it didn't negatively impact the game.

'Tis only an option.

I'm sure you don't use every option presented to you in the game no? ^_^

It's true. Too bad they didn't have another year to work out all the bugs and finish all the content. I still believe it would have been better than the original if it were complete.

You have a very apt signature for a comment like that... EDIT: Akrim beat me to it :bandit:

It's good to see the people who were avidly against it at first come round to the idea a bit more. It gives me hope for people yet!

Vacuums suck.

No vacuums in Mass Effect!

The entire game will now take place on planets and all ships have been removed.

I guess ME1 and 2 sucks people. Makes one wonder why you're on the board of a video game that you believe sucks.

What? Female gay romances still count! :bandit:

Y'know, sometimes I think Bioware should force gay relationships in games just to annoy people like this. I'd quite happily suck it up knowing there are so many peope raging because of their own ignorance.

You present very compelling evidence.

Alright everyone, shut down the thread.  Discussion's over. Pack it away. Move along, nothing to see here.

I'm...not gay.

Okay. That's...nice.

Because they want too?

Uh...you might want to take your own advice.

Well, what would you suggest for those reasons? Time constraints? Practically all the content exists for ME1 even though it was never used, so it doesn't seem likely. Sometimes developers get excited over an idea, do it, but then get shot down by the marketing or publisher who review the final product.

The reason to remove the content from the second game could very well have been because the content was cut from the first, who's to say?

If they used the same characters for ME2, I would also consider this, but since they use almost entirely new cast, I don't consider this likely. Ofcourse it's also possible that the content was removed to avoid a different kind of controversy; according to people studying files hidden in the game disk, all the planned homosexual romances were with aliens. Maybe the same marketing team decided that it would imply that homosexuals are freaks. Yeah, Liara is an alien, but also far more human-like than any romanceable alien in ME2. The sad fact is that sometimes content gets made only to be cut out in the last minute over some minute issue.

Indeed. I don't think it was necessary for Mass Effect to have non-mainstream romances, or any romances at all. I didn't think that a videogame romance could be anything but embarrasing and silly in when I started ME1, but I was proven wrong. But it did have a non-mainstream romance in more ways than one with Liara. And ME2 has even stranger romances with Thane and especially Garrus, the latter something that I wouldn't have believed in a million years when I saw the petition threads. Bioware has now consistently added just about every kind of non-mainstream romance option imaginable (without even dirtier imagination than Garrus-fans, anyway), except M/M, and it's become extremely conspicous in its absence. There are few excuses to exclude the option, at this point. Kelly Chambers was also rather embarrasing, since she confirms that FemShep can be lesbian towards humans, but does it in a rather shallow manner, and without the Paramour-acheievement.

Do we really need a new Zevran in this game who talks only about how he likes hard leather boots and leather armor and acts pretty much like the most stereotypical (forgive my politically incorrect term here) "queer"?

Because if that's the only way BW can make a gay character, then I say don't do it. On the other hand if they can make a character that does not feel like it's only purpose is to be gay and nothing else, then it doesn't bother me.

On the story point I don't think it's a good dissission to make a gay Shepard in the last game of the series, but if you can live with that inconsistency it's fine by me.

Zevran, while he appears like a stereotypical promiscuous limp-wrist, does have quite a bit of hidden depth, and is far more sympathetic and understandable than he appears on the surface. It's a bit same as with Jack; the stereotype she sets up is very different from the reality behind her crude demeanor. I wouldn't consider Zevran a badly written character, even though I can easily see why he would appear like one with just the first impression.

In any case, Dragon Age is written by completely different people than Mass Effect, and I haven't heard complaints from the people who uncovered the unused lines for Ashley's or Kaidan's same-sex romance. If the romanceable M/M character in ME3 would indeed be the canon gay badass Hendel Mitra, this pitfall would be easily overcome.
