I'm currently aiming to fill my codex during my third playthrough, and it looks like that might not be possible according to your origins.
For instance, it looks like the entries Duncan, Darkspawn, Arlathan 2 and some others are only available to some origins. Did anyone find a way to fix that? Or are unavailable entries updated later on? Did anyone manage to get all of them in one run ?
Is it possible to get all codex entries ?

Everyone should get Duncan's codex entry - all origins meet Duncan. Arlathan you should be able to get when you go to the Dalish encampment, even if you're not from the Dalish origin, or elsewhere. I haven't found a codex yet that was origin specific, except possibly one of the Cousland family...

i've been trying this as well. i think i may have missed a few, but eh... i know you probably couldn't get the letter from endrin aeducan to his son/daughter. for the mage origin, i was able to pick up most if not all the codex entries during the fade sequence in the circle tower. i think most of the human noble origins might be in the arl of redcliffe's estate. dalish elf origins possible codex locations would be only the other dalish elf camp that you actually visit.

Dalish character don't get the Duncan and Darkspawn entries, even though they meet Duncan and kill Darkspawns during their Origins story (that is, at least until Ostagar is finished). I just went through the dalish origin three times and litteraly went through all possible dialogue option, and didn't get those two.
What was the Cousland family codex entry you're thinking about?

As a City Elf, I believe it is impossible to get the codex entries 'Mana and the Use of Magic' and the entries 'The Brecilian Forest' and 'Arlathan Part 2', which as far as I am aware are only available in the Mage and Dalish Elf origins, respectively. I've managed to get every codex bar these, and some of the 'controls' ones. It annoys me that anyone seems to be able to get Arlathan Part 1 (from Lanaya in the Dalish Camp), but Part 2 seems to be Dalish Origin-exclusive.
Also, unless you find it elsewhere, Dwarf Nobles may be unable to get the tale of Luthias the Dwarfson, as the Ash Warrior leader won't tell you the tale.
I would very much like to be proved wrong on these, btw.

Just checked, neither of my two non dalish characters have Arlathan Part 2 or the Brecilian Forest. My mage has Mana and the use of magic, but my dwarf doesn't. It indeed seems that some codex entries are limited to certain origins, which smells quite a lot.

Definately cannot get all the Creature Codexes unless you're playing a mage; the little glowy fade spirits at the start of the Origin are only attainable there. I'd imagine there will be other Origin specific Codexes too.

I think what I get annoyed most by is that its so *few*. If you could only get like half the codex entries I think I'd be less annoyed (as in, a lot were race/origin specific), but *three* out of almost *three hundred*? It's just irritating.

Harelda, there's a way to summon these glowly fades during the Lost in the Fade quest. I missed it last time, but it appears to be possible according to DA Wiki.
Eudaemonium, agreed. My personnal opinion is that it is another case of devs screwing up. Given how some parts of the main plot are incoherent and poorly written, I wouldn't be surprised if they just forgot to make a few codex entries available to some origins.
"Hey dude, I have an idea for a new codex entry about Arlathan!
- ORLY?
- Yes, I'm going to put it in the Dalish origins, and we'll find some other way to get it for other characters...I'll think about it tomorrow, cause wifey is waiting."
6 months later, non-dalish Arlatan Part 2 is still Lost in the Fade .

The Wisps (glowy balls, and technically only one) appear in a secret room in the Raw Fade, behind a Spirit Door. It has a Ship in it (no joke) and an Essence of Dexterity.
Meneldhil, that wouldn;t shock me as the case. It just seems so much like a forgetful dev getting too tied up in other things. I mean the fact that some codex entries appear in different places for different origins means its likely things were overlooked. I have a suspicion that 'the Brecilian Forest' may ahve been intended to trigger as you entered the forest (as others, like Redcliffe do), but for some reason doesn't.

Do you get xp for all codex entried?
Some show an xp gain and some don't. I'd say 50% of the time I only see the xp gain pop up on the screen.

In my experience (I may be wrong) you only seem to get XP for codex entries you actively pick up (as in click on them). Ones you get through dialogue/entering areas/etc never seem to give you XP.

There are codex entried I have clicked on that do not show an xp gain. I could be gettign xp, but it doesn't show onthe screen. Maybe it's a bug or something.

To a certain extent, your codex entries reflect your character's knowledge of the world. That's why the same codex entry for different origins will have different information.

Yes, I know that very well. But it is still quite annoying that some characters can't get some codex entries.
First, I don't really see the point of having a codex with a preset number of entries, if you actually can't get all said entries. Some people such as I like to do everything possible in a game: collect all items, finish all sidequests, fulfill the codex and what not. But here, you can't (likely because the devs forgot to make some entries available to everyone).
Things would be much better if the codex didn't show a set number of entries that become readable as you unlock them. Having the entries appear throughout the game as you find them (as opposed to being unlocked) would be much more rewarding, cause you wouldn't end up with 10 or 15 entries missing because you can't get them with your character.
Then, my second point - regarding your comment - is that, for exemple, any character can learn about 'Mana and the Use of Magic', or about 'the Brecilian Forest', or about 'Arlathan Part Two' during the game, yet only mages can unlock the first one, and only dalish can unlock the two others.
I think Bioware should have made more entries unlockable through dialogue (as opposed to unlocked by clicking on a scroll). Several characters talk about mana and the use of magic, the end of Arlathan, the Brecilian forest, but you don't get any codex entry for it. This is kind of weird, as there are several dialogue-related entries in the early game (mostly in some Origin stories and in Ostagar). Those just seem to disappear once you finish Ostagar.
Then again, I think the devs overlooked the codex, and simply forgot to finish the job on that departement. It seems quite unlikely - and stupid - that the codex purposedly cannot be completed with any character. I'd like a confirmation on this, though I doubt we'll ever get some.

That being said, I'm going to start working on a codex mod, that allows each character to get every codex entry.
My knowledge of the Codex is so far nul and void, but I'm sure I'll be able to work something out.

The simple answer to the original topic.
No. No single race/class can get all of the codex entries.

Is it possible to add them to a character with a cheat or with the editor?

I'm not entirely sure, I never bothered as there is no achievement for having all of them (though an Archivist achievement could've easily been added with a little more work).

I'm OK if I don't get all the codex entries. I think it gives me a bit of incentive to try other origins/races in order to pick up those other ones in another playthrough.
#22
Posté 10 février 2010 - 07:19
There are achievements for that though

I was talking about the incentive to play other origins and classes. There's no all codex entries achievement on any version AFAIK

Which makes sense if getting all the codex entries is impossible on a single playthrough - no point making an achievement for something that can't be done.
