Also a question? Does armor count for anything besides appearance and small skill/power increases? I wouldn't know how to go about finding out other than to ask someone.

Other than the little bonuses you get, I dont think so. Even fortification gives you a % of armour based off your shield total, not armour.
(Which as far as im concered is an awesome move. I can look how I want and dont have to wear some horrid looking armour for stats).

I believe Jigero has nothing to contribute to this discussion other than expressing the fact that he's much cooler than me and better at all games and smarter and more right than I could ever be in my life. Thank you for enlightening me on those so very self-evident truths. I must truly be stupid, and you my social better, on account of my blurred perspective. I do truly hope you grace us again with your boundless wisdom and foresight regarding this, obviously beneath you, conversation. Again I thank you.

In ME1 you could basically play solo. Your teammates were almost irrelevant.

ME2 is about building a team, and working together as a team, and the combat reflects this. I depend on my teammates, and I have to choose tactical positioning carefully. There is not one area where combat was not improved over previous Bioware games. It is quite elegant, and the only simplified parts are the stuff you have to deal with outside of combat and role-playing (e.g. acquiring items). Instead of spending a significant % of the game dealing with that extraneous stuff, I instead barely have to deal with it at all.

Yes, I wish I had a few more options armor-wise, but the precedent has already been set for them to give us more armor via DLC. That makes sense, because then you just get the ones you want, and don't have to travel all around the universe in-game to do so, like the more old-fashioned style of games have typically done.

You mean those awesome team mates that would stand behind cover shooting the wall instead of the enemies, while you ran in with your Adept and killed the entire group in seconds without any risk? I still vividly remember shaking my head at how completely trivial and silly the Saren fight was on my 2nd playthrough with an Adept. Stasis, Warp, then hold down the trigger on the unlimited ammo assault rifle that never overheated.

I think way too many folks are looking at ME1 through rose-colored glasses and forgetting its many flaws. From a game mechanics and balance standpoint, ME2 is a huge improvement.

Honestly after playing through Mass Effect 1 with zealous addiction I find ME2 to be a far more streamlined and "dumb downed" experience.

The biggest complaint I have is the weapon system, or COMPLETE lack thereof. The RPG element of the first ME2 was what drew me to the game, having NO customization at all really adds a level of blandity to this title that is surpased only by its hollow characters. Your companions get 3 usuable skills with a 4th thats unlockable... okay fantastic, except that 90 percent of the powers have near identical effects and do nothing to differentiate the characters. The companions post dialogues are fairly well done and interesting, but after only a few short hours the game already feels like its coming to an end. You scoop up some companions, do some additional favors for them, and well you all know what happens next.

My first play through on Hardcore took me 12 hours. This was with time I spent scanning planets, I had completed all of the loyalty missions and half of the side quest. The game was a ****ing cake walk as a soldier. Upon realizing that insanity difficult was now available I decided to restart as an infiltrator and... the game is STILL a cakewalk. Moreover, the boss situations didn't acutally feel like I was facing anyone of stature, in short they were boring. With the exception of a couple encounters, only the last boss was actually "awe inspiring" and even he gets completely ANNIHILATED in a few short moments.

There are hardly any sidequests to speak of, the only ones being the "anomalyies" you have to PAINSTAKINGLY lookfor across the galaxy, some having no real proximity to the storyline. Eventually I just got annoyed and found a list of the planets containing them. At least when you were driving around in the mako it actually felt as though the devs had created a world that was worthy of your time. Instead you get a 5 to 10 min objective and then your off scanning the solar system for the next diversion.

I can only hope that with Mass Effect 3 they decided to reincorporate some of the original elements that made the first ME such a success. Granted the game was fun to play, but it felt more like a linearized cinematic than an RPG of substance. Basically it felt like a console experience, a game decided to entertain for a few short hours before its off to the next 60 dollar title. Obviously as a PC gamer Im forced to realize that cross platform games have to incorporate all of the fans, however, this felt entirely to much like a game that was built for those with a controller rather than a keyboard and mouse.

In closing I can see how the reviewers of this title were impressed, but a 94 percent rating across the board? I have a hard time justifying such  a near perfect score for a game that is EASILY passable under 15 hours.

I stand by my and a few others statements that the characters in this game are not hollow. My favorite story bits in this game are the loyalty missions, Mordin's in particular was very well written in my opinion.

I also kinda miss the mako, as a few others have stated. For the most part in the first game, you didn't have to drive all over every planet you could land on. Most of the side missions could be skipped altogether, and the resources are simply ways to get a few extra creds and xp in the first game. Scanning for resources is a neat idea, and could be salvaged if made to be far less tedious. I would suggest putting far fewer mineable resources on each planet, and also scale the planet scanning mini-game to the supposed size of the planet. I believe that last idea has been floated around a few times here in this thread and others.

Anyway, just thought I would expand on a few things from my original post.

Thoughts?

Totally agree.  Don't forget how a teammate would suddenly reappear next to you because he/she got stuck on some random thing in the environment and wouldn't move?  That was very annoying especially when trying to order one during combat to move somewhere to shoot at something, and all I would hear was "I can't get there".  Much better this time around.  Combat is much more interesting in ME2 with the pathfinding part fixed.

You know the combat, while slightly better then ME1, is still very bad.

I hope ME 3 has a blend of 1 and 2.
