He's there to help you make the wrong decision for the fire squad leader...
Indeed. Poor Legion...
Anyway, I'm taking Zaeed along on my second playthrough, and I think his foul-mouthed old badass personality fits in well with much of the ME2 atmosphere and Shepard's mission, and many of his comments are hilarious (to me at least). I would have liked him to have standard conversation options, but on the other hand it does fit in with him simply being hired muscle who will likely take his Cerberus cash and bolt as soon as the job's over, assuming he survives.

HE IS JUST A GUN. that is all no impressive back story
He needs more dialogue sure but his back story is hilarious. If you listen to his war stories you figure out pretty quick that he is always the only one of his team that comes out alive.
Then on his loyalty quest he lies about the refinery and without any warning reveals his true intention which is to kill a former associate which he does by blowing up the refinery and nearly getting the squad killed.
Add these two together and you will see why I laugh when people make Zaeed a fire team leader in the suicide mission. I'm laughing right now just thinking about it.
If there was face to face dialogue with Zaeed and a [punch him] option everytime he does something reckless I'd field him in the squad every mission.

Got a minute? You might learn something. Zaeed's perfect the way he is. Could you imagine him opening up to you and talking about his feelings? Nonono, his purpose in life is to be a bat**** insane old man, which he does flawlessly. The only downside to Zaeed is that we only got ONE mission centered around him! THIS IS AN OUTRAGE. If we DO get an extra mission with him, some day in the distant future, and the writers make him anything but MORE bat**** insane, I will quit life. Zaeed is my partner in badassery. Together we explore the stars, unloading thermal clips on various flying vehicles.
I shud let you go. Toak mo' lay-uh, Sheppehds.

i am hoping the next squadmate does not suffer the same fate. i would rather buy a new xbox HD than have the fidelity of ME2 compromised.

I love taking him on the Krolus mission where Jedore is always smack talking over loud speakers in the background and he says " Will someone shut this **** up!"

His VA does a great job and his character design was very well done. There's nothing wrong with Zaeed.

I keep wondering how a guy with an arabic name who is a space mercenary ended up with a sort-of cockney accent.
Lawrence of Arabia maybe?

It's obvious the whole point of Zaeed was to please me, seeing as how BioWare loves me.

Yeah, Shale was amazing. I was expecting Zaeed to be just as well done, essentially a character made for the original game, but then taken out to be supplied as DLC (just like Shale).Bratinov wrote...
Thats no excuse, Shale was a great DLC character.Sursion wrote...
He's DLC. If you don't want it, don't download it.
But oh, how wrong I was. Zaeed is a craptastic NPC with no real character to speak of. It's like some kind of fan mod someone came up with in an afternoon. No dialogue, no character, no recruitment quest. That was a really low blow by Bioware. It has really been going downhill in certain departments these past few years...

There doesn't have to be the option to talk about how he's got a hard time as a kid, whats his favourite food, why his armor is yellow and whatnot.
He's a goddamn sociopathic Mercenary - why the heck should he tell you?
Actually i was pretty glad to have a normal guy around that ship, with everyone else telling you their life story without barely knowing you.
He's still well developed in his own right. Try bringing him with you on missions, he's got a lot of great comments & little stories going with most situations.

Zaeed is not a sympathetic character (that's the difference between him and the rest of the crew). Story wise - he doesn't bring anything to the table (even with his loyalty mission... though i do have to admit i wished all loyalty missions were like his 'the probability of you failing to gain their loyalty if you choose a certain path' only other one that you could possibly fail is Tali's/Samara's was more a cool twist).
Gameplay wise - I haven't tried the more challenging difficulties. But I barely found use for him throughout the whole entire time.
Next to Thane, he's the best sniper in the game. Unlike Thane, you can also equip him with a Vindicator. And more importantly, he has an AoE effect (2 if you count Concussive Shot) and Disruptor ammo, making the Geth easier to deal with.
From the time that you first get him, he makes a pretty solid companion to take along.
All the things you mentioned about Thane. Replace him with Garrus and your points are void. Garrus can carry an assault rifle. He does have the concussive shot and has two ways to deal with Synthetics... Overload and Armor Piercing Ammo when it comes to the big synthetics. Sadly you don't face a horde of synthetics since they are cleanup as "council member" Anderson would say. Haven't played Insanity yet (played hardcore) and didn't have trouble when recruiting Tali.
