why do people keep saying that Zaeed is a merc? yeah Ok he founded the blue suns but after they back stabbed him he began working as a Bounty Hunter up until he met Shepard.
he makes reference in Purgatory as well as when you recruit him.
also Zaeed is a Nice guy if you take him to Horizon and talked to him afterward he will tell you a story about a kidnapped girl he and his group helped.
Why is Zaeed in the game?

Zaeed is not a sympathetic character (that's the difference between him and the rest of the crew). Story wise - he doesn't bring anything to the table (even with his loyalty mission... though i do have to admit i wished all loyalty missions were like his 'the probability of you failing to gain their loyalty if you choose a certain path' only other one that you could possibly fail is Tali's/Samara's was more a cool twist).
Gameplay wise - I haven't tried the more challenging difficulties. But I barely found use for him throughout the whole entire time.
Next to Thane, he's the best sniper in the game. Unlike Thane, you can also equip him with a Vindicator. And more importantly, he has an AoE effect (2 if you count Concussive Shot) and Disruptor ammo, making the Geth easier to deal with.
From the time that you first get him, he makes a pretty solid companion to take along.
All the things you mentioned about Thane. Replace him with Garrus and your points are void. Garrus can carry an assault rifle. He does have the concussive shot and has two ways to deal with Synthetics... Overload and Armor Piercing Ammo when it comes to the big synthetics. Sadly you don't face a horde of synthetics since they are cleanup as "council member" Anderson would say. Haven't played Insanity yet (played hardcore) and didn't have trouble when recruiting Tali.
Thane has ridiculous +damage in his class skill, though. The others don't.

Run through the game with Zaeed along with you as much as possible. His interjections are fantastic. One of my favorites is when you approach the 2 Asari on the Citadel with the forged IDs. They trash talk humanity and Zaeed kind of steps forward, facing them...

Zaaed has the best VO of all party members(imo) and his warstories on the normandy is ok, still wish he had an dialogue tree of his own,,,,,
edit: as Skyst said before me; his interaction with the enviorment when you bring him along on missions are great

Bioware should have made Zaaed a Allien, because there are way to many Humans in the game / crew.
If you bring Zaaed to Omega Merc recruitment center (Archangel mission), you can talk to Zaaed (just 2 options).

Well, he's just in the mission because Cerberus hired him unlike the others wherein TIM hand-picked them.
I think he's handy to bring along on the first few missions. When you get the better characters then you can leave him on the Normandy

I love Zaeed. Great voice acting. He cracks me up with his comments. I do wish there was more content for him but he is valuable as a squadmate. I'm on my third playthrough and I've been bringing him along on most missions.
