I have a dual core system, specs below.  I have had the game since its release date.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game.  I have updated all my drivers and my bios.  The game has never started.  It shows the first screen with the "play" button and when I hit play the screen goes black and within a few seconds the game freezes, screen still black, and an error message appears telling me the game has stopped responding.

I know this topic has been posted on this forum before but I cannot find it because there are 118 topics and no search function.

Specs:

Windows XP SP3
AMD 6400+ dual core
2GB Crucial DDR2 (5-5-5-18 3-23-6-3)
nVidia GTX 260
SB X-Fi Fatal1ty card
Direct X 9.0c
Motherboard is Gigabyte GA-M59SLI-S5

My specs are more than adequate.  Dragon Age Origins runs like a champ in highest settings.  If anyone has any tips I would deeply appreciate it.  I've had the game for more than 2 weeks and have not been able to play it all.  If someone from BioWare were to respond that would be really good.

I had the same problem, but I'm running Win7.

I solved it by doing the following:

- Go to Program Files/Mass Effect 2

- Open the "Binaries" folder

- Find "MassEffect2.exe"

In Win7, you can right click on the .exe and choose "Run as Administrator". This solved the problem for me.

It's been a while since I've used XP, but I don't recall "Run as Administrator" being one of the options. If it is, give it a try. Otherwise maybe play around with the compatibility modes, etc.

Launching the game directly form the MassEffect2.exe in the binaries folder is a good start, though, since you don't have to go through the intermediary of the launcher.

Shucks, sorry.

Looks like you're to the "just change crap around and hope" stage then. Maybe try running it windowed, or changing around some other settings in the Config utility via the launcher. Uninstall the sound card and run on onboard...

FWIW I'm running DirectX 11, but 9.0c is what comes with the game so that shouldn't be the problem.

Good luck, and if you fix it make sure to post back here for the next guy who has this problem...

Heyalrey, thanks anyway. Should I find a work around I will certainly take pity on fellow sufferers.

I found a fix. I read on one of the forums that the game was not installing correctly if you have 2 optical drives and you leave a disc in one drive while you install the game from another drive. The post also indicated the size of the game in the installed folder should be 11.8 GB. So, I uninstalled the game, took out all discs from my optical drives and reinstalled the game using only one optical drive with no other discs in the computer at all. I also did NOT install the free DLC that was included with my purchase (actually the DLC was provided via a promo code. I downloaded the DLC way back when but on this attempt did not install the file I downloaded using the promo code).

Ok, so the size of the game folder was only 11.4 GB but I tried firing it up anyway prepared to be disappointed yet again. To my surprise the game started! I've made it through the first few minutes, no spoilers here. I will post any developments here, good or bad.

I had the same problem yesterday and solved it in a very similar way.  Good luck!

Holy necro-thread batman!

Your optical drive is your DVD/CD drive. Its called an optical drive because it uses optics (lasers) to read/write the data rather than magnetically, which is how tapes, floppy, and ghard disks work.

So ifyou have 2 cd or dvd drives, make sure the other one doesnt have any discs in it when you try to install the game.
