The amount of stupid in this thread is amazing.
Indeed.
1) Your best look at a Prothean is in the ME2 codex. Goto extinct races. Click on Protheans. Otherwise look at the statues on Ilos in ME1.
2) The Collectors may have originally been/come from the Protheans but they are no more Protheans than brocolli is cabbage. Same thing. Cabbage was changed on a genetic level overtime through selective breeding to produce brocolli. Protheans were changed (no idea how long it took) by the reapers to suit their needs thus ending up as the Collectors after all of their modification.
3) The 3rd beacon is subjective. I interpret it to be forshadowing/warning of the protheans becoming the collectors (I'm pretty sure I stumbled on that mission before I hit the collector ship).

Its even possible Illos was the home world of another spieces, would make more sense for the reapers not finding the facility.

I can't believe how hard this is for so many to comprehend.
1. Reapers show up.
2. They indoctrinate Protheans, like they did Saren and Benezia.
3. They try to make Reaper out them, it fails.
4. They decide to put the Protheans that are left to a different use.
5. After a while, the Reapers realize they need to make some changes to the Proteans because the longer a being is indoctrinated, the more useless they become.
6. They add some cybernetics to the Protheans. Presumably, this is where they developed the husk tech.
7. Eventually, the cybernetics aren't enough, so the Reepers decide to completely re-engineer the Protheans genetic material until all that remains intact is a single strand of DNA.
8. The Collectors are "born".
We can assume that the original purpose of the Collectors was to aid in rounding up the rest of the Protheans. This would make them an obvious threat, worthy of inclusion in the warning that is sent out from Ilos.
I think the collectors were around way before that, they were known to collect odd animals n such as stated early in the game. It was also said they have alot of unidentified dna in them and very little Prothean DNA. My opinion of them is they do and always have done the reapers ground work and are a mix of a very large number of things.
Actually that brings up a good point you say the Collectors could have been apart of the reapers plans the whole time. Hmm, I'm wondering if the first reapers where made from the keepers now. OR what I'm getting from you is the collectors are all types of beings. Not just one. They are many like the master collector keeps saying every time he possess one of the collectors in the game during combat!

During an optional mission on Joab you can find a Prothean artifact which shows the same images as the Beacon did, but this time, with a Collector clearly visible at the end of the vision. Eventually, while studying data on the Collectors in the lab aboard the SSV Normandy SR-2, Mordin Solus determines that the Reapers indoctrinated the Protheans and compensated for their growing lack of ability due to prolonged indoctrination through cybernetic modifications and eventually the transformation into Collectors"

If a hyper-advanced race took human DNA and made an eight-legged saber-toothed cyborg tiger out of it to prey upon human survivors, it would be a close analog to the fate of the prothean genome.

The Collectors were explained to have bits of Prothean DNA but EDI also stated that their physical structure is no longer the same.
So while the Collectors ARE former Protheans, it's not what they looked like.
pretty sure teh beacon is the memories of the protheans actually being torn apart and modified into collectors with them adding all the metal and stuff and you finally see a pic of them at the end of the vision. We'll probably find even more beacons with more videos come ME3, and they'll probably give us a full video that doesnt induce epilepsy.

They do look like that. You get a vision on an N7 mission where you see them.
Amen. That is the proof right there. And also why the hell do the damn Statues on Ilos look like Husks?
Because they are PROTHEAN husks. Jesus its mentioned I dont know how many times in the game, that the collectors have been so genetically altered they dont look like the original protheans.
In the vision in the N7 mission it shows BOTH original protheans AND collectors. its one thing to break continuity from game to game, if that were the case, but why on earth would they show protheans looking like completely different things in the same damn vision?! Because collectors and protheans dont look alike, end of story.

also they had a double helix dna strand like most species but the reapers added a strand of genetic material down the middle of the dna.
another thing seeing as reaper ships are made to resemble the races they are made of why does the prothean reaper look nothing like those statues? it looks almost exactly like the collector general though
also the protheans on illos were in cryo-sleep untill the reapers left and the AI woke them up so they would know nothing about the collectors since they could not exist yet and by the time they woke up the collectors would be back behind the omega 4 relay and the reapers back in dark space
so all in all the "collector" in the vision was what protheans looked like and the other ones were protheans patrialy melted and that whatever filled the roll of collector when the protheans were wiped out was not the protheans

The Collectors do not look like the Protheans. The Prothean husk image from the codex is the closest image of an actual prothean you are going to get.

Dude? The salarians already look like the greys! C'mon, if you think about it, that would be SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO lame. Seriously. To expect something aristocratic, fascinating, and original and then to just see more salarianesque grey aliens... lame, lame, lame, lame, lame, I have to say. Especially considering the look of the statues on Ilos doesn't resemble a grey.Tooneyman wrote...
In Mass Effect Universe. I would love to actually see a real prothean. I'm hoping by ME 3. We can see what the prothean's actually look like. No they are not the collectors. I'm hoping they look like the grey aliens from Roswell. That would be Awesome!
But I'm with you on the Protheans. I would just gut a nug to see a real one, even if it was merely artwork. I want to know what they were like before the modification.
To anyone saying the vision in ME2 must mean that the Collectors and Protheans look exactly alike--
Remember that the beacon was created by the researchers on Ilos after CENTURIES had passed. Centuries during which the Reapers were using indoctrinated and no doubt genetically modified Prothean agents to round up other Protheans when they first invaded, and the beacon was intended to be a warning of what the Reapers had done.
In other words: "Witness the horror of what they are doing to our species!" was the warning. The vision of the beings that look like the statues on Ilos are shown FIRST in that vision, THEN the Collector form is made visible. As if to show the Protheans being twisted.
Vigil says, "Within a few centuries every Prothean was enslaved or killed..." then, after the Reapers were certain they had extinguished all organic life, after every planet was stripped bare of resources, technology, and slaves, you ask about the beacon--"once the Reapers were gone, the survivors here on Ilos decided to risk sending out a message. We knew it was unlikely there were other survivors, but if there were, we wanted them to know about Ilos." So it was very late in the game when the beacon was activated with that message--centuries after the Reapers had invaded, after Vigil shut down all but the most essential personnel's cryogenic pods.
That was a vision of what they were being twisted into; the vision was very abstract in the first place and in the ME2 vision may well have been intended to horrify other Protheans by showing them what was being done to their species. Like the Keepers, they were altered to suit the Reaper's needs--after all this time, they would've evolved anyway. With the Reapers screwing them up, there's no way that they'd even look exactly the same as they were so long ago. Besides, it would be a huge letdown if the mythic Protheans looked like four-eyed bug things.
What is fascinating is the implication. The Protheans sent out a message. And if the Reapers missed that beacon in their slow, methodical process of wiping out all evidence of the Protheans, then who can say what else they might have overlooked? Maybe there were Protheans on the far edges of the galaxy, colonists who hid in a similar way to the Protheans. Maybe they received the beacon's message and left their colonies. Maybe they found the researchers on the Citadel and rescued them. And maybe, just maybe, enough of them were gathered due to that beacon that they were able to find a way to hide far from any possibility of detection. Hide, and recuperate.
Maybe they withdrew somewhere far beyond the Milky Way. And maybe if you can somehow uncover that place, you'll find them recruitable as allies in ME3... a species that has been hiding in fear of the Reapers for ages, preparing for a war they hoped never to have to fight. Maybe the Protheans--their descendants--can become part of the galaxy again. Can fight the battle their ancestors never had the chance to fight. It would be epic.
It's quite far-fetched I'll admit that; a doubtful theory... but it's possible, and I would flip if it turned out to be a plan for ME3 all along. I mean, the connection I felt to the Protheans in ME1... it was incredibly moving.

Protheans look like cthulhu squid faces.
I'm willing to bet most of the Husks on the Reaper ships coming in will be of Prothean origin. So, instead of humanish faces, they'll look cthulhu-ie too.

The fact that the message in ME2 seems to be an "update" of the vision gives me hope... somebody had to be alive to make that update. It could just be that the message makes your vision clearer, shows you more distinct images... but I'm hoping that it's actually new information from either the researchers or someone else, adding to what had already been gathered by the Ilos staff.
The awesome part is, they wouldn't even have to look like the original Protheans. Hopefully somewhat like them, with that eerie nobility and the long, strange limbs with claw-like hands, but they may have changed since then. They could still play around with the species quite a bit after all this time, and probably should at least somewhat in order to reflect 50,000 years of development. I hope there's still that entrancing mystique... I hope they sound at least a bit like Vigil, with that airy resonance to their voices. I want to be mesmerized. I want it to be a moving moment.
Ohh, how I want to meet them... amazing how connected you can feel to an ancient species which reached out to you from "beyond the grave", so to speak. They believed they were doomed, but they still fought to save other organic and intelligent life forms. The fact that they were so selfless and so brilliant when they could have just let hopelessness overcome them and blown their own brains out... it was the belief that other species in the future could suffer the same as they did which drove them to warn us. Everything Commander Shepard has been able to do was made possible by their beautiful spirit of hope and dogged determination even in the face of extinction.
The Protheans were so amazing in ME1. I don't want this to be the last we see of them. In my heart I still hope for more.
