Just for kicks, I guess.  My Adept-Insanity playthrough will likely be my last until some of the other DLC comes out, but the shotgun released today gave me some ideas for a soldier based around using just the shotgun.  Naturally, it'll need to Insanity-viable.

Adrenaline Rush gives a damage boost and lets you storm in and out of range...  and don't one of the ranks give you a damage reduction?  Combine that with Barrier or Fortification and you might have a decent protection, nothing compared to a Vanguard Charging around but still, enough for a soldier.  I'd guess that most of your cooldowns would be devoted to either letting AR recharge or refreshing Barrier once it breaks.

Your squad would probably need to do two things--provide ample distraction, and debuff your enemies so that you can dart in for one-shot kills.  I'd go with Tali and Miranda, in that case.  Tali for her Attack Drone, a rank 1 AI Hacking, and Energy Drain; and Miranda for her great squad bonus, Overload, and most likely Heavy Warp.

Any thoughts?

Why Shotgun for Soldiers? That is gonna be ineffective and slow.

But anyways, just go Shock Trooper, Hardened Adrenaline Rush, get Geth Shield Bonus talent (evolve into the +75% shields, +10% damage) and you should be fine.

I agree. I don't think the shotgun would be very beneficial for Soldiers as a primary weapon. Hell its role in the game is more or less used for clutch moments. Your best bet for a shotgun is the Sentinel or Vanguard (Sentinel will have the option to learn shotgun training during the Collector ship).

Getting close to the enemies is the biggest problem with shotgun combat on Insanity, without a doubt. Assuming you don't get cut down trying to get closer, if they attempt to flank you (Geth tend to do it a lot more than other enemy types I've found) you're probably going to end up dead. This wouldn't be as much of a problem if your squadmates actually *did* distract enemies, but the enemy AI seems to be written to pay 99% of its attention towards the player. Pop up and expect to get caught in torrent of fire even if both of your squadmates are closer and the only ones exchanging fire. I just don't see shotguns as a viable Insanity weapon unless you're really dedicated and expect to restart a lot.
