Bioware's first believable romances

But for me the KOTOR romance with Bastila is far away the most involving character interaction I've experienced in my nearly 3 decades of playing computer games. Bastila is the only computer-game character that I actually get some kind of little pulse-racing thing going when I think about her, even here years later. I was IN that romance.
It seems to me the key was that the KOTOR devs knew in advance Bastila was going to be the romance option, and so they focused their fire on her, built the plot around the relationship, and as a result KOTOR was a love story. I wrote about it at more length in this thread:

The female Shepard romances, however, seemed...very forced to me. With Garrus, he doesn't even bring up an INKLING of romance until you bring it up through a sexy metaphor. With Thane, it seems incredibly out of character, for how highly he wants to get in touch with his family again. And with Jacob...well, everything with that character seems forced.
Thoughts?

Great writing. I haven't seen that level from Bioware or any other Developer since. Shame.

I thought Garrus was the most realistic in-game romance..
Thane on the other hand...He was really meant to tug on the ol' heartstrings.
Jacob is meh to me. I will never romance him, and it's not because he's human. It's because he's boring and too much a "bro." I mean, if you choose to be friends with him, you can "bro-hug" him. HAHAHAHA. Too funny.
What StaR said. I really wished they'd given us a chance to have the non-humans besides Liara (she reminds me of a grown-up Mission Vao) as love interests in ME1, because I don't like the idea of 'cheating', but dang - my FemShep was dead for two years! Life goes on, right?
EDIT: Forgetting sentences is bad mmkay?

I love it how you guys are talking about believable romance when these people live on a starship. A believable romance is when two people meet in a coffee shop, club or bar and go to dinner or something like that and not going to distant planet to shoot aliens.
The believable aspect is the process, not the setting. To me, what you describe isn't romantic at all, it's a meat market or hunting - at best, it's a nice date to let one's partner show one off when one is wearing the extra-pretty clothes and such. The real romance is often what is left unspoken when the two of you are alone, or the way that you can be in the same room together doing different things and not feel lonesome.

Yep, just a quickie. Kelly does tell you that if you want Jack's respect you should turn her down when she offers casual sex.

Garrus's romance didn't even seem like a romance. It was just like "Hey, let's get it on!" It only seems romantic at the end when he "Just wants something to go right..." That really redeems the whole romance. With the way that femshep generally acts with Garrus, it seems to fit, though not ideal for someone who honestly from the beggining felt a loving connection. A loving connection certainly developed, but after making yourselves seem like horny asses<---that metaphor just went somewhere HORRIBLE.
Last is Jacob, who I haven't tried to romance so I have no opinion. I have seen the end scene with him though and I have say...wow.
Overall I enjoyed the femshep romances, but wouldn't say they are the most believable because they felt to quick...not enough dialogue to go around, I guess.
P.S. Jack's love scene was beautiful. I cried a bit myself....

Actually, just have Thane stop talking about his dead wife and abandoned kid and get him to unzip and remove that jacket. That would also be perfect.

The romances in DA:O are also very well done and I still fondly remember romancing Viconia DeVir in Baldurs Gate 2. Aerie, not so much. ^^

When I say believable, I mean believable in cinema terms. It is about creating the illusion of believability I guess. But you probably know that already.

I was kind of hoping for there to be a f/f romance option in the game, but that wasn't the case, and I'd already gone the friends/comrades route with both Jacob and Garrus... and hadn't made it far enough in the dialog with Thane to get anything there. (Didn't even get the tease with Samara.)
Better luck next time, I guess. I tend to not want to play as male characters if possible, but the girls in Shepard's team are just too damn interesting for me to pass on the chance to pursue a romance with at least one of them.

ME1 I loved Liara. She was innocent, smart, book worm.
ME2 It felt like she changed too much. I felt like I did not get the welcome a lover would give (she was pretty cold, one small kills/embrace). Her story/reason to not join me felt contrived. Her 2 missions where lame. Afterward it was nice to hear about what she did to get me back on my feet, but she still felt distant!
Miranda obviously has lots of issues and her story reasons of opening up to you make sense. Overall she's a bit of a **** but super attractive so it's a tease. It presents an interesting choice but it still felt like a very casual relationship, lust not love.
Tali, it was nice to see the option open up. Personally the sick/health issues is a huge turn off to me, but I like/care deeply for her. It's a true case of "I just want to be friends".
I really hope ME3 lets us reunite with our former love interests from ME1.

Put together Jacob's hot abs and fun camera angles, Thane's romantic sensitivity, and Garrus' tenderness and lack of family issues, and you have the perfect romance.

That would indeed be perfect. <3

I realise a title like this will seem somewhat disparaging towards previous Bioware games. It's not my intention to suggest that previous romances were bad, but I always felt that the respective romance options fell in love with the PC no matter what as long as you were a bit nice to them. With ME2 the writers reached a new level however.
At least, that's been my experience while romancing the female characters. I will try to explain.
Actually, it seems only a few moments and lines were necessary to really make the difference and bring the romances to life.
With Miranda, for example, things clicked into place when she says (paraphrasing) that 'you are pretty damn close to being perfect yourself'. It's a fun 'flirty' moment that really goes a lot deeper than it initially appeared to me. Miranda is hung up on the whole perfect genes issue. So to her it's much more than superficial attraction to be swept of her feet by our intergalactic hero who comes from simple non-enhanced beginnings but still manages to achieve so much. Add to that the fact that she cared for an unconsious Shephard for 2 years and that he has the approval of the Illusive Man, the true father figure in Miranda's life, and you have a believable romance.
With Tali, that fun part is that you are, as she says, the dashing captain who keeps rescuing her. The fact that you couldn't romance her in ME1 makes the romance in ME2 only more convincing. Little things like the line 'I wish Shephard were here' in her log in the ancient Quarian city reveal how important Shephard had become to her.
Any comments? Especially from female players.
/Agreed, nd as for KoTOR the Revan/Bastilla romance was well done, better than the ones in the non-Bioware developed sequel at least.
*Note, although Kreia I think is probably one of the most intriguing video game characters I've ever seen.

Yeah, they would be good together I think if your Shepard didn't come along and romance her. I see Kal'Reeger as a quarian version of Shepard-Lite.NeinoRanatos wrote...
Y'know, if Tali and Shepard didn't hook up, I can see her hooking up with Kal'Reeger.
Anyways, I found it cute when he hesitated on telling why he was on the Rayya during Tali's trial.

I have a bad feeling most people don't give her a chance and either Rene-**** her or just ignore her completely.

Problem with her is that, I think she's a bit too much of a **** for too long for most player's tastes. While Miranda is a b***h in the beginning of the game to you and is still one at certain parts of the game, she does warm up to your character.Aisynia wrote...
Jack's Paragon romance is the best in ME2 IMO.

I had to laugh at how you expect Miranda's love scene to be more sincere and it turns out to be rough. Then Jack is the sobbing, caress, love-making. Tali's scene really pissed me off - I WANTED TO SEE HER FACE!
After playing through ME2 a couple times, I went back to ME1 and played through. I was shocked at all the skin in ME1 during the scene, then come back to ME2 and it's all.....clothed!
KOTOR's love plot was the best, hands down.

I would like to elaborate on myself by saying that I don't really expect 'love'. In fact I would say that it is a bit unrealistic to talk about love when people know eachother such a short time (even Tali).Jaradakar wrote...

I liked didn't really like romancing Thane nearly as much, but i did really like the final romance scene.... He seems so accepting of his death but when he admits that his fear of dying... i honestly teared up a bit.
I did enjoy playing as a maleshep as well, but the LI were just not as dynamic to me. Tali was the only one i romanced but that's just b/c even us chicks like the girl w/ the chicken feet, you can't deny those hips!
