I'm one of those that always travel with a sturdy dwarf if he's available (Koregan was always in my party in BG2).Natural resistance to magic and a fondness for "ale" are all charming traits.
I think many people dislike Oghren simply because he isn't a pretty little elf or a Ricky Gervaise style bastard-son-of-a-king.

I've never done it myself, but word on the street is it's really really really really hard to get his approval rating to -100. Like almost impossible hard. Even then you have to specifically choose to kill him.
I think all of two people on these threads have pulled it off and they could have easily been lying or cheating.
Bottom line, I don't know if it's possible or not, but it's difficult enough to have a ton of people beleave it IS impossible. That says it all.
*SPOILER* Every other character save morrigan can be killed without to much trouble. Hell I acedently killed 4 on my first playthrough... I had to restart!

Well I assume if Oghren is dead then he won't be in your playthrough of the expansion the same is Anora will be Queen instead of Alistair being King if you placed her on the throne.
As to the OP's question, I have had some playthroughs where I have built up good influence with Oghren and did his side quest and keep him in the party allot, and though there are some moments which reflect a slight aspect of of a bit of depth to him, on the whole he remains the dwarven cliche to me. Unlike any other companion, there is nothing of real depth that comes from him unless you really work for it, and even then, their only the smallest hints at something more then he appears going on. I'm afraid I also agree with a number of people above, his humour is often a turn-off to me, so if his banters are funny the first time, but just fall flat for me in later playthroughs and other comments just make me cringe. In all honesty I found Khelgar from NWN 2 OC to have more depth to him that Oghren in some respects, so no, getting him early in some playthroughs has made no difference to me personally, he remains my least favourite companion, so I admit I'm am disappointed that the returning 'favourite' is him, that said, it's hardly a game breaker, I don't hate him, just don't really enjoy his character that much, or feel he adds anything to my party.
Hopefully Awakening will expand his character and add allot more depth to him, otherwise I think I'm largely just looking forward to the other 5 companions which all seem much more interesting to me then Oghren (and make the most of the cameos with my other companions that I will miss)

SO if he's dead you just want get him uh then who's going to carry my load of lyrium thats all he was good for he's a dwarf the rest of us don't touch the stuff and wishpig how the hell you kill a party worth of characters?
Hehe...
Well I forgot to get dog, thought I could comeback for Leliana and Sten, and made the mistake of taking Shale with me on the deep roads. At that point I restarted.

I am sorry Oghren was a waste of my time. Honestly I was greatly annoyed when I had to carry his useless dwarven arse into the broodmother/caradin fight. He was a paper tiger and hit the ground fast.
He actualy suffers the same problem as all the warriors in the game with the possible exception of Shale and the dog. Alistair: Strength 18/Constitution 13. Sten: Strength 28/Constitution 13. Oghren: Strength 34/Constitution 18... Are you seeing a pattern here? They're all really fragile and you need to start giving them points in constitution as soon as they start getting levels.
The problem with Oghren is that whilst he has a very high constitution (compared to the others) it's very low for his levels and the others will probably be tougher. Just give him enough COn boosting stuff, and raise it as soon as you can, and get his approval up. He'll suddenly become much more solid (not to mention the fact that he had physical resistance 72 or 73 when I had him which made him really sturdy on his feet and saved me in a lot of fights). Disturbingly he actualy often managed to outlast a sword and shield character (when used on the edge of fights to pick off victims one by one).
And his personality is hilarious. It's just a shame that most players end up getting him so late because doing the Orzammar line of quests basicaly requires a dedicated party healer so you'd practicaly need to be playing a mage to get him early on. MY dwarven noble put off returning to Orzamar for as long as possible because he knew he wasn't allowed back, and wanted to delay the unpleasantness for as long as he could.

That said, I'm not complaining that he's going to be returning in Awakenings. He seems the most obvious choice to me, given that you can't romance him or kill him (without putting in extreme effort to do so). I like him better than Sten at least. *shrug*
I hope Bioware does a better job of handling the old romances before plopping you into a new setting with new companions than they did with ME2, but just in case I'm doing my first playthrough with a character who is romantically available at the end of the game.

Now, I liked Oghren even on my first playthrough when I got him last, so I may be the exception. He reminds me of Wolverine, a little berserker with a noble soul. He even helped me kill his wife, and was "ok" with it after we camped for the night.
I liked Wynne (whom it seems many hate) as well. Morrigan was fun. In fact, the only PM I didn't like was "Dog." All of the others worked for me. And the conversations generated by running into the same spots on the map with different members wasted hours of my time to discover! Bioware really knocked the companionship in the game out of the park. The only thing that could've made this game better would be a more "love to hate" villain. I just didn't get that feeling from this game like I did in all the Baldur's Gates. Sarevok, Irenicus and Amelisan really grew on me (almost to the point that I was sad to end their sorry asses -- almost).
As far as playing Oghren, you just have to equip him with decent gear and get his tactics up to par. He's a two-handed warrior and they require a bit of "finese" that board and sworders don't. I always tell him to Sunder Arms and Armor of any enemy and if you can get your tactics to stay on the "scrapper" setting that lets him Two-hand Sweep enemies surrounded by two of more others, then he really comes alive. I pour everything he's got into strength so he can hit and damage well. Early on, just have him keep Precise Striking up so he can have a 90 or higher attack. I never use Powerful Swings because of the ill-effects. I set him to Mighty Blow anyone that's frozen (and sometimes Two-Hand Sweep them for a multi-shattering shower of Ice chunks!). The guy can put the hurt down if you let him, so show him some love!

hand me a tissue, or it's not about that damn dwarf!
when i finished origins, and saw the last epilogue card which said "...not the last .... heard of him/her...", i was totally excited, because i really wanted MOAR! because i really loved the world, my party, everything.
expansion was announced, and i instantly turned into manic-mode, being totally enthusiastic to get MOAR! given the fact it'll take place just after a few months, i expected that it'd turn out to be quite similar, i was thinking "great, let's take off where you left, wohoo". like waiting for a new series of your favorite tv-show. i thought i'll get my old dudes back, with a few new ones added (new things always good, plus added group-dynamics).
then someone *cough* stated, that there'll be only one dude from your party that'll be, well, in your new party. my anticipation dropped rapidly. there was no word on who it'd be, but i didn't care anyways. hello? i wanted MOAR!, remember? because if you like something, you naturally want more of it ("it" describing the shape it had when you started liking it, btw). creepy thoughts came up in my weird little brain, someone screamed the name certain british tv-show, in which i lost any interest at the moment they started killing nearly all of the cast off(not the MOAR! i like:().
i'm not saying i won't be buying and playing it, because that would be childish and a shameless lie on top of that. i'll probably end up loving awakening and be terribly ashamed of my recent outbreak.
just saying my little fangirl-heart got broken and kicked around for the probably billionth time.
yes, this i silly.
yes, i don't seem to have more pressing problems (thanks god), and yes, i am unblushingly whining on the internet.
thanks for your feigned concern.

I totally hear you. I hate it HATE it when characters in tv shows die off, honestly for some reason their replacments never fill the gap.
BUT this is not the case with bioware games. The new characters in BG2 were a BLAST and I found them far more intresting then the BG cast. Same with the ME2 cast, ya less companion interaction, but the companions themselves were all so damn intresting.
Bioware games are known for their companions, they have yet to let me down. It seems each new batch of companions are better then the last. I'm certain I'll love whatever cast we get in upcoming expansions and sequels. Ya, I'm an Oghren fan (obviously) but even if he wasn't returning in DA:A I wouldn't be too upset over it, and I would welcome the new cast with open arms.

Sad part is, you will most likley feel the same way when your fav from Dragon Age 2 doesn't return in the Dragon Age 3. It's a blessing and a curse.

actually i thought about something along those lines. given our warden'll be around for some time, i really wouldn't want to change the whole bunch for every possible upcoming expansion. that would feel weird. i mean, seriously, who would do that? a hero with massive attachment disorder?

Content: No, I wouldn't want Oghren anymore if he'd been the first companion I got. I liked him, laughed at his jokes, but I find other characters are more versatile and more interesting and I'd rather bring them. Still, not a big problem, it's going to be far from the biggest thing in the expansion that will displease me. Different strokes...

But to be fair, he did give me the best laugh of the game when delivering bad news to a widow.
And to be honest, my *real* disappointment is that none of the romanceable characters are returning. I feel cheated.
