Huh, I think I must have fallen asleep through the bits where Legolas was a dirty little man tramp. They really deviated from the books in places, huh.

His entire appearance is just archtypal of your basic "dreamy" elf. You can't deny that he doesn't look like Legolas. No, I'm not racist, not all elves look alike lol Also, if you fell asleep, it was probably during Elrond's Council, you know, the 56 page epic basically summed up in three words, "Destroy the Ring". Oh yeah, and Legolas living it up of course. Also, like I said, he was just about useless. Couldn't pick locks well from the get go and wasn't that great in battle. Leliana was a much better rogue overall when it came to battle and practical things like locks and traps.

My reasons for not being happy with Ohgren being the only returning playable member (if indeed that's the case) are manyfold, some having already been brought up by others:

1. I have NEVER liked Dwarves, in any game/story. I don't know why. I guess I'm just racist against the short and hairy alcoholics who are usually just comic relief. To date, the only origins I haven't played are the dwarf ones.

2. He didn't fill any useful role. I vastly preferred Alistair, so I always kept him in as my tank. For dps, I had plenty of mages or scouts to choose from. So yes, perhaps he didn't get as much of a chance as the others. But on the other hand, I feel no motivation to get him earlier in any subsequent playthroughs. If I didn't feel compelled to side with Caridin anyway, the "consequence" of having to kill him wouldn't faze me one bit.

3. His personality wasn't compelling to me. I mean he had plenty to work with: being married to the only living Paragon who left him and had a lesbian love affair. But then, in my opinion, none of it (nor helping in Branka's killing) seemed to have any effect on him. There was no real change in his personality, and characters who never change are BOOOORIIIIIING. I mean right off the bat he's hitting on that chick in the Spoiled Princess. I suppose at the end he gets serious when (not if) you leave him behind at the gates of Denerim, and there's the epilogue, but it's too little too late (especially the epilogue) IMO.

4. As someone mentioned, if we are limited to one, and he is it, then I guess there's some resentment that he would get chosen over someone we really connected with, like Alistair or Leliana or Morrigan. I really really liked those characters, but instead I get the guy who drinks and farts and masturbates. Yay.

5. I just wanna reiterate that I hate Dwarves (no offense to any Dwarf-lovers out there). I mean even the thought of playing one and romancing a human or elf is just...euugghh. At best it's laughable, and at worst, nauseating.

there are atleast 2 dialogues that involve him having regrets over what happened with branka, one of them if you take him to see the sacred ashes(infact if you take him along you find out that the sacred ashes might not be magical for the reason chantry people believe) and another if you boost his approval up high enough in camp

like I said in my earlier post there is SOME depth hidden under that drunken pervert of a dwarf but its so few and far between its not even funny and it really does feel like a wasted opportunity

also the dwarf origins kick ass and I normally despise dwarfs as well

I can see 4 characters killed first run, Kill Wynne in the tower when you meet her there with the kiddies by basically telling her to get out of the way you have a tower to clear, kill Zevran, if you didn't know he could join you. kill Leliana at the Urn when she turns because you dispoiled the ashes, and kill Shale at the Anvil. pretty easy to do. I can see doing this. really makes the final battle interesting if you do that and pass on Morrigans offer. it is so much fun killing the Arch Demon with a Rogue Archer build with Alistair Oghren and Sten. went to every merchant I could find and stocked up on healing potions and salves. so fun!

I actually do use Oghren quite a bit. I never picked up Sten or Shale, and I find he works well in combination with Alistair--Alistair knocks 'em down/stuns 'em and Oghren clocks 'em. His indomitable ability is a life saver against some opponents, too.

As a character, I do find him pretty shallow. I can see where the people who find depth in the character are coming from, but aside from the (very good) moment at the Guardian, that depth is something you're inferring more than something that's actually written into the game. Perhaps this will change in Awakenings.

Actually, another easy way to kill Wynne is to have Morrigan along in the party and choose the wrong dialogue options...you can manage to have Morrigan head off too, then, which is brutal if the PC's not a mage.

Nope, i just didn't like his character, i gave him a chance on one of my playthroughs, he was the type of character i've seen in both movies and games and he's the one thats comic relief with the least backstory and the isn't one that i'd connect with to me he's a slide show no where near as well developed as the others nor is he worthy of the same respect , the fact he was a drunktard didn't make me like him either.

Only thing going for him is his banter with Alistair, that was the one thing i liked about him, but apart from that i didn't respect him as a warrior in my game, didn't like him as a companion and it wouldn't have changed regardless

Keeping in mind of course that this is my opinion. I'd rather see Sten back tbh

Orlesians, bah. Who needs the French anyway? I mean, Orlesians. You get the point.

Oghren is an ****, he drinks like crazy, he's a lewd bastard only thinking about sex and booze. Yeah. He is. I found him very useful in combat though. And that's all that matters. The English have a saying about horses: handsome is what handsome does. Leliana (a mate and I just call her "Red") doesn't cut it for me there. She's only really useful for opening locks. And I totally dislike her accent.

In a fight though, na, thanks you, I take the **** dwarf any day.

Damn shame. I didn't think commoner was anything special, but the dwarf noble was so far above and beyond the other origins I found my self wondering WHY?

your forgetting Oghrens Fade nightmare and his conversation about how it was his fault that Branka left him if you get his influence high enough

he has a few shining moments and If he acted more like he did in the few scenes where he isnt a drunken pervert he could have been a great character...

I really love the dwarf lore in this game, and I don't mind that Oghren returns. But! Would love a badass dwarf lady as a companion, or would that upset the DUDEBRO contingency that all video games seemingly have to to cater for?

My only problem with Oghren coming back was that I worked hard to get that hairy alcoholic a happy ending with Felsi. I wanted to give him the option to retire comfortably after the hell his ex-wife put him through when she killed his whole family.

Being his wingman was a proud moment in my elf mage's life, if rather embarrassing. He deserves his happy ending and dozens of little Oghrens running around. Can't do that if he's still following Chancellor Surana around to stamp out Darkspawn, can he?

I liked him, I found him useful, I just thought he deserved the 2.5 kids and loving wife.

Blasphemy! Seriously though I am smitten with that accent.

There's one point when she's talking to Alistair (if you're romancing her) and he asks something (I don't remember what) and she ends by saying "How inappropriate!" My god...the way she says "inappropriate" is the Eighth Wonder of the World.

No, the eight wonder of the world is King Kong.
But i know what you mean, I heard that sentence recently too. Very, very, very good voice actor .
I would love it if Leliana would return.

No, I don´t think that it would change anything if people would get him earlier.
I had Sten rarely  for longer than half an hour in my fighting party but like him much more, f.e. because of his interesting amoral morality system.
Most don´t like Oghren for beeing 2D and his pubertal kind of humour. I have him at about 80+ right now and don´t have noticed any notable changes in his behaviour (it´s still all about beeing drunk, titts and farts) so I´m not sure what examples you would like to read as proof that I have given him a chance.
He exactly answers expectations I had 4 seconds after meeting him for the first time, what is terribly boring.

I think more people would accept him if he would have more attributes beyond this grumbeling dwarfy - thing. Disliking elfs was the coronation somehow.
What I liked were his toughts about Branka f.e. A political attitude towards what´s going on in Orz, some more "weak" moments with a bit of self-critizm about his behaviour (drunk to death) - that would be things making him more acceptable for me personally. Perhaps in Awakening he will be built out.

I agree about the Dwarf origin stories. The noble one in particular is amazing -- even if you don't like Dwarfs (I'm right there with you) you really shouldn't miss that bit of awesomeness.

I love Oghren, and as a 2 hander, I find him far better as a fighter than Sten. And certainly more enjoyable as a companion, especially when he shares his brew.

I'm one of the few people who actually likes Orzammar and the deep roads, and I usually do it first or second, so I can get my drinking buddy early on. In a party, it's either Oghren or Zevran as my main damage dealer .

THe thing I love the most about Oghren though is what he said when I asked him how he was doing. He replied that everyone in camp whines too much. THat was awesome.

And his telling Alistair that if he drank more wine, he'd whine a lot less. ;)  I like Al, but that made me giggle.

He needs a happy ending and not just in the fashion of an Antivan Massage.

Original question: No because, like others have said, we want our romances back.
I liked Oghren right away but I have a soft spot for underdogs, misfits, and those treated unfairly. I saw his good heart, loyalty, dedication, and enduring spirit buried under all the alcohol and bluster. If it weren't for that, I'd've been turned off quite quickly. I don't mind his crude humor because of it. I would like to see Oghren in the expansion but I will be very dissappointed if he's the one that travels with Alyson instead of Alistair. Unless Oghren's a romance option and then it'll be sort of ok; I'd send another character through Awakenings just for that. That would be very interesting, lol. Also interesting would be if the returning character was Sten because the Arishok wants him to go through the Joining or he volunteered for it. Sten changed a lot through his journey with Alyson so maybe home doesn't feel quite the same...

(I reeeeallly want Alistair back, though!)

I actually did Orzammar second to last.  I did the elves last since they tended to be the furthest away from being tied into the darkspawn, the political situation, or the chantry.  The elves' problem isn't really gone into that much until you go to the alienage near the end of the game or go to the dalish to recruit them.  Though if your character is an elf you get more of that point but to me the whole plight of the elves seemed kind of a subplot compared to the other plot points.

I don't think that would matter to some. He's not romanceable and he's not cute and dreamy. (Imagine if Alistair looked like Oghren, would Alistair still be as popular?)

On my first playthrough, Oghren was the last one I recruited because I did Orzarmmar last. I was intrigued by him, but not because of the bathroom humor. He seemed like an honest friend. He doesn't have to be with you, he admits that. I ended up restarting the game and doing Orzammar first. Oghren really grew on me, I like him better because he seems more a friend and loyal than anyone else. I got to play with him in my party for the Fade, then at the Sacred Ashes. He's seriously so honest and doesn't care. I respect that about him. he's not wishy-washy. He's very strong willed and not afraid to speak his mind.

Personally I see it as, lovers come and go, but you'll always have your friends.
