Lightprobes - not just for water?

So I was looking through some of the single-player module levels, and I've noticed the use of lightprobes where there doesn't seem to be any reflective surfaces nearby.

The wiki mentions "nearby reflective surfaces and the illuminance values for characters", which could probably use expanding on - since I thought that's what character lights were for... is it just a way to also fake "reflective" character lighting?

In the Orzammar level below, it *seems* as if the light probe is helping to make characters' armour highlight some of the "light" (really just a texture I'm guessing) off the "lavafall"... it's just I don't see how else it would be doing that with only the baked lights in front of them.

I know I need to play around with this more to see what happens when I remove them, but I guess I'm just looking for general feedback on when others have found them useful besides just water and whatever else in the game is reflective (really, what else is?).

E.g., here's the Orzammar Hall of Heroes followed by the Brecillian Forest.

tl;dr: You should absolutely drop a light probe into every room you have in your levels, at a representative location.

I make sure to drop a light probe into every room in my levels. Pretty much every surface in the game has at least a bit of indirect lighting mixed into it, so it's actually pretty essential to have light probes around.

I looked for a somewhat easy to understand page about indirect lighting on the web, and the best I could find was this:

http://www.debevec.o...ial-cga2002.pdf

Not necessarily easy to understand, and the shaders used in game aren't quite as complex, but the pictures alone should give you an overview what it's all about.

If you want more explaining, I'll be happy to provide - this is what I went to university for :P

Ciao, muh!

Interesting, thanks. I'll have to give that PDF a read-over.

Light probes allow you to see your character right now, rather than have a black character.

Don't put light probes in more than one place in a level because multiple light probes do not work right now. They will all show the same reflection map. I put one light probe in each of my levels.

Bioware knows about the light probe issues and is working on it.
