Forget nightmare solo which just amounts to shoddy tactics like abusing
the AI, abusing overpowered game elements, and similar tactics. If you
want a real challenge try the following.
1. Nightmare, or
Nightmare Plus (Mod) difficulty
2. No potions allowed, period
3.
Only allowed to use gear at same tier as your current level (example:
no tier 7 equipment at level 10) This is particularly important in
regards to DLC items. Starfang for example shouldnt be allowed before
level 20ish
4. No overpowered spell combos (paralysis explosion
+ AOE on a group), forcefield AOE, etc... You should be able to figure
out which spell combos are overpowered and disallow them.
5. No
kiting (which means running away for long periods from enemies)
6.
No AI abuse of any kind
7. No equipment abuse (example: spell immunity vs gaxkang)
I personally like steamrolling my
enemies so I dont follow rules 3, 4, and 7. I think the above settings are alot
more fun than nightmare solo which simply amounts to abusing game flaws.
Real Nightmare Mode (Harder and More Fun Than Nightmare Solo)

May be just me, but I personally try to abuse the stupid AI as much as I could.
I have had time image that you see the weakness of your opponent and you don't want to attack on that. The AI is not intelligent, true. But I don't think you will make it a better game ( or more fun) by ignoring the stupidity of the AI. "Know your self and know your enemy", that's what written in the Art of War.
Just because the AI is stupid, it does not mean you have to behave the same, you know.
No kiting, no potions, no "overpowered" spells. Should I add "overpowered" talents as well? Momentum, Arrow of Staying, Last strike, etc...
I remember in other game, people have praised the good AI because they know when to run, when to hide behind cover. Run away when your health is low ( or kite, in another way of saying) is nature and nothing to be shamed about. If you get hurt, you don't run away, and don't try to heal your self, do you know what normal people will say?
You know what is the hardest mode? I can tell you the one. It's when you're playing on the console and your controller ran out of battery. If you play on PC, the mouse and keyboard do not responding.
