So, my question is whether or not Racism between speices in Mass effect is effective in terms of potancy or not.  In other words, Should it be a underlining theme as I've seen in the ME universe.   The Turians don't like humans, humans don't like anyone and everyone dislikes the Qurians...essentially.

I believe that it serves a very important purpose in both the game and the real world.  First and for most it demonstrates how fruitless it can be, hindering characters as they go through the game in different ways.  On the brighter side of it, it shows us how using our differences can benefit everyone in the long run.

To further add, I must say that I hope this theme continues in ME3 but also gets ramped up.  Its been simply and underlying thumb-tac on the poster board that is this games plot.  If it continues to show racism in a positive light by focusing on its negative effects I believe all who play with will learn something.  And also, with such a young audience of gamers, purhaps even change the course of human kind.

Game wise, I beleive it to be VERY factual.  Granted we dont try and kill each other first, I believe first contact in the real world will be heaped with racism and predujice on both sides.  Case in point, look at District 9 for, what I believe to be, a very plausible account of first contact events.
