Why do Miranda and Jacob have more Squad Points than the rest of the team? They start with 1 point in each of 2 abilities, while the rest of the team only start with 1 point in a single ability. Since they gain points at the same rate, this means that Jacob and Miranda always have 1 point more than the rest of the team by endgame. It may not seem like a lot, but it can be the difference between maxing an ability and having 3 leftover useless points.
They also get the advantage of not having their powers locked. For every other character, you need to spend 3 squad points to unlock their second power. Mordin can't use Cryo Blast without unlocking the first 2 levels of Incinerate, for example. This puts a severed damper on the builds availible to the other characters. You can't have a Mordin with Full Cryo Blast, Salarian Savant, and Improved Neural Shock, for example, because getting Incinerate to Rank 2 robs you of the points you need to fulfill that combo.
Yet Miranda and Jacob can have any combination of their skills used, able to max any 3 abilities and have a single point in the last. (28 points via level up, 2 via starter abilities, and 1 unlocked via loyalty mission).

Jacob is pretty terrible though, so it kinda evens out. Miranda is the best support character in the game though.

True. But I still don't get why those two have completely different ability setups than the rest of the squad.

Yeah, give the other squadmembers an extra point. That one point really messed up the builds. >.<

I like Jacob when he has Barrier unlocked. Any ability that allows the characters to regenerate their shields or armor makes them a lot tougher.
