Grunt is one of the better developed characters. His search for identity and issues with being a clanless krogan is great. Plus, he's kick ass in combat and has some great one liners.

Especially if you bring Morinth to Tuchanka (have Grunt in the party) and interact with the Morinth prompt in the Urdnot triage area.

I think the moment that made his character was when he talks about the revenge killings perpetrated on the turians who killed warlord Shiagur. He realized he was racist against turians, and his reaction was simply "huh, good to know," in so many words. He is so unfamiliar with himself that any revelation is, to him, a step in the right direction.

So I've played through ME2 a few times now. Soldier, Vanguard, Renegade, Paragon, etc...
Each time I start I really try to go into it with an open mind when it comes to the characters... But each time I find I'm at a loss when it comes to Grunt. He feels very under developed. As it stands it feels like he's just the tolken Krogan squadmember. He lacks the character Wrex had, and I feel it is like a missed oppertunity.
I love the Korgan as a species... Their persionallties, views on strength/honor/battle is awesome. Wrex was compelling, at first he seemed like a big angry Krogan, but you started to see his feelings on he genophage and the plight of his people. This was expanded upon in ME2 (assuming he lived for your games) as you see him again.
Grunt on the other hand just seemed like a run of the mill "angry krogan" who happens to be genetically perfect... Ok, it's like they had a plan there, but either intentionally left it vague for ME3, or just flat forgot about it.
Did any one else get a different impression on Grunt? Is he more complex then I'm giving him credit for? Did I miss something?
they just arent as good as the real thing.

Can't say they have much choice. What is interesting is his need to find out what his place in the universe is.

He has Shepard to learn from and quite possibly Wrex.
It's very clear in the story that Grunt is one of the most superior Krogans ever. With the Urdnot Clan making historic changes to Krogan culture and Grunt being a part of that clan, I see great things ahead for him and his people.
Plus he took out a Thresher Maw.
I truly started appreciating the guy when I went to collect Legion from the Reaper on insanity. It's pretty special to area Incinerate a group of husks and stick the lil feller in the middle of them. yeeeeAAAAAARH!

I thought EXACTLY like you did about Grunt at first, and really hated him on my first playthrough, but after giving him a chance, and bringing him along for a few missions, he really started to develop as a character, and now I'm really starting to appreciate him alot more, he is way more then he first appears.
I think Grunt is the perfect example of getting back what you give to him, if you don't do much other then his loyalty quest, he'll be a boring uninspired character, but if you actually bring him along, you get to see him grow, at first he just starts out like a big enraged Krogan, but bring him with you to the Archangel mission, and go talk to the Blood Pact, bring him to Illium and talk to the Bartender, just bring him around honestly, and have him with you when you talk to people, he starts to grow out of that bloodrageish act, and really starts to well, become a character.
Thing is, you got to realize, Grunt was just born, and is going through the Korgan equivalent of puberty, he has no idea how to control himself early on, but as you go, he takes examples from you, and much like Garrus, grows based on how his Battlemaster acts, and really starts to respect you as a Captain, and it will be interesting to see how Grunt develops into Mass Effect 3.
