I had no idea there was so much potential variation. Garrus died closing the blast doors the first time round, so I just assumed that whoever you chose for the pipes would die, chose Legion instead, and he died in the same way (which didn't matter too much). How do you keep the pipes crew member alive?

I'm pretty pissed actually. I'm going through the final mission as I'm writing this (just alt-tabbed out of the game), and I just lost Tali who took a hit to the face while she was closing some blast doors (I had her running through the tube thingie, and she never got stuck for long at the eight points that needed to be opened).
I had all ship upgrades, almost all weapon and armor upgrades and all characters loyal before I went through the Omega-4 relay (which I did immediately after the IFF was ready), and I was under the impression that this would all but guarantee that all characters would make it through alive?

And even if not, there are a bunch of them I didn't really care about either way, but I really didn't want to lose Tali - particularly as I was hoping to carry this save game with me to ME3.

Is there an element of complete randomness to who lives or dies?

Garrus, Miranda, and Jacob should be your only secondary squad leader choices. Anyone else will die, or get your tech killed. Likewise, use only Tali or Legion as the vent tech, and Samara for your biotic shield. Even if Mordin's loyal, send him back with the survivors - he has a tendency to die randomly while holding the line.

Just finished the game five minutes ago (loved the ending by the way), but I guess I'll just have to go back and replay the last mission so I have a save game with Tali alive. She was the only one that didn't make it.
It sounds like my "mistake" was picking Samara as secondary team leader (even though she seemed like a pretty decent choice for such a task, and Miranda complimented me on picking her) - and Jack for biotic shield duty.

Well, gotta go - it's time to get started on my second playthrough :), this time with a paragon engineer.

Someone can die for another's mistake. In your case, while having Legion in the pipes is correct, you must have chosen the wrong person for the role of fire squad leader. The less effective leader couldn't provide enough fire cover and got Legion killed. The correct people for this role are Garrus, Miranda, and Jacob.

There is very little variation, actually. Getting everyone out alive requires you to perform very specific things and making the right choices.

Oh, back to the OP - everyone survived in my first play through. I was lucky to have made the right choices as I avoided reading anything about this last mission before playing it.

My first go at the ending ended with Mordin dying. I reloaded and sent Mordin off with the crew and everyone survived. Sure made my 43 hours worth it to see Shepard leap onto the Normandy.

My Tech died the first 2 times, and I couldn't figure out why -- until I found out that the choice of second team leader is extremely important. ie. It has to be one of either Miranda, Jacob, or Garrus. Placing anyone else in a leadership role, regardless of having full squad loyalty and complete equipment upgrades, will result in deaths.

Everyone made it on my first playthrough, didnt really think it through too much or look at the descriptions, just went with who I thought would be best.

Garrus for the team 2 leader, he's my best bud!

Legion for the tubes. Sending an organic through dangerous mystery tubes? A robot can survive that!

Thane to go with the survivors. A trained assassin can get them through stealthy like!

Samarah for the bubble. She is definatly the most powerful biotic, she is glowing ALL the time in her room :P

I was surprised to learn Zaieed as team leader gets the tube person killed, thought a merc that long in the business would know how to cover a door! Also Mordin didnt die for me, but people say he dies randomly? How?

I play mostly paragon so I was able to keep everyones loyalty.

I'm guessing he got shot at the door while they were retreating. After the Human-Reaper was destroyed and the debris fell on us, Joker contacted Shepard. Shep asked him whether everyone is on board and he said everyone who survived. Imagine my surprise when I saw Mordin dead on the ground. The idiot :pinched:

I managed it, though in hindsight it was about 40% luck so I'm not claiming to be a super gamer or anything.

i did, i figured legion could survive a firefight and hack a terminal so i chose him to be tech specialist. i trusted garrus could lead because of his C-Sec experience and lack of being a ******, Samara was an extremely powerful(non-psycho) biotic so i chose her to do that, Zaeed was the only heavily combat focused character i didn't think i would need so i sent him with the crew, again i chose garrus as squad leader, and all my crew was loyal so it didnt matter who i picked to fight the reaper with me

I'm not so sure that Mordin's death is random. I've replayed the exact same save file several times, with different squad and specialist variations (but always picking second team lead from the three I listed earlier). He hasn't died on me yet. It may be related to his Omni Tool upgrade (ie. not getting it), a specific Team Leader choice, or, as someone mentioned on another thread, the length of time taken for the Reaper fight.

I'll be wrapping up my second playthrough with a different Shepard on Insanity. I'll see what happens then.

Well, sorry but Legion died, only Legion. No-one else, and since they said he's pretty important, i guess we could repair him or something.

The team leader is a factor as well.  Pick Garrus, Miranda, or Jacob for that part both times as they are the leader types.  Jack and Samara are the strong biotic types that can maintain the shield till the end for the shockwave.  Tali and Legion are the tech types that are fast enough to close the doors the fastest.

Also, upgrades are  factor as well.  Get all the upgrades you can get to max out your chances even when you pick the right choices.

Loyalty is also a factor so if you want to have everyone survive, go through all the loyalty missions.

I got everyone - crew included - out alive the first time.

Legion for the Tech - I figured vent pipes would have significant heat in them and he'd be the one who could take it best.

Miranda for the first team leader - it's her job in Cerberus after all - keeping people alive! :P

For the second team:

Garrus to lead - considering his past its hard to consider anyone else.

Samara for the shield due to her insane biotic power.

Zaeed to escort the crew back safely, due to his insane badass-ness. Hell, I figured if I sent Zaeed into the collector ship on his own to do the suicide mission he'd have punched out that human reaper and strolled back to the Normandy no sweat.

I was really bricking it throughout though - so scared of the team dying - there wasn't one character I didn't care about.

(Except Morinth, but she doesn't count!)

I'm on my 5th (or 6th?) playthrough & so far haven't lost anyone in any of them. This was probably down to luck in the 1st playthrough though - I did all the loyalty quests but didn't do a lot of the N7 missions and didn't have all upgrades.

I had everyone survive. I completed all of the sidequests and had all my upgrades before the Joker level so I went through the Omega Relay ASAP. I used Legion as my Tech specialist, I mean I thought that was pretty straightforward. I had Miranda lead the first fireteam and I brought Jack and Grunt with me until Legion opened the door.

Then I used Samara to make the biotic shield and I brought Mordin and Jacob with me for that. I put Garrus in charge of the second fire team and I had Zaeed bring the survivors back because I thought he would be strong enough to defend them considering his background. For the final leg, I used Jack and Mordin and left everyone else to defend the door and they all made it.

Until I read these forums, I didn't realise it was so easy to get the members of your squad killed. I got through with everyone on my squad alive (the Normandy crew wasn't so lucky... I did just about every anomoly N7 mission after they were taken).

I chose Garrus as team leader both times. He seems to make it very clear that until he was betrayed he did a really good job at keeping his old crew alive. Easy choice.

For the Tech Specialist in the vents I chose Legion. He's a robot... he can deal with vents.

To go back with the survivors, I chose Thane. He just seemed to be the most trustworthy of the entire squad. Good job to Bioware for making me trust the assassin the most.

And Samara for bubble. She was the one that suggested it in the first place.

I had Jack in Miranda as my squad through the entire mission and I got everyone out alive. Mordin didn't even die randomly for me, which is awesome... although I would like to know the intricacies regarding why he dies, for future playthroughs. Because if I go through this game on insanity with all upgrades only to see Mordin taking a deep sleep on the battelfield, I'll probably rage.

My team survived but my crew perished. I was rather surprised that there was a time limit to saving them, considering how liberal Bioware has been with time before, I just saved all the extra missions until I had my full team because I didn't want to miss any conversations. :(

This warrants a second play through...

oh first playthrough

Sent Jacob in the tube, he voulenteered after all. Got himself killed at the door.

Garrus led the fire team

Zaeed led crew back to the normandy all survived

Jack did the bubble

Garrus led diversion team, Tali and Miranda died.

Best outcome for my Cerberus hating Shepard,

Everyone survived on my first playthrough without even having to back up and reload a saved game.  I was a little disappointed at how easy it was to keep everyone alive.  A suicide mission should be more difficult than that.  Seriously, why would anyone not do all the loyalty missions and get all the important ship upgrades?  Then it's pretty easy to figure out who has good tech powers, who has good biotic powers, and who would make a good leader and/or escort.  Make ME3's decisions more difficult, please, Bioware!

I actually used Jacob as the leader for the first squad and then again for the escort.  I figured Jack wouldn't have a problem obeying him versus Miranda.  And Garrus was always with me, so...  :)
