Hey Guys

Finished Dragon Age recently, and thought I would try my hand at ME2. Alas after getting it I cannot even play the game. The situation is as follows:

I start the game, the into movies all run smoothly, the menu comes up smoothly, and I want to make a new game, and then I choose either Male or Female.

Initially the loading screen would come up, but nothing would ever load, and I would eventually use Task Manager to terminate ME2. After several more tries it went from just not loading, to crashing. Now, only a second or two after I select either male or female, (it may show the first tiny part of the loading screen or not, depends on how quickly it dies), I get a message saying "Mass Effect 2 has stopped working".

My specs can easily play the game, but here they are anyway:

Windows 7 64bit
Q9300 Quad core at 2.5Ghz per core
4GB RAM
9800GTX 512mb Video Card
1TB RAID-0 SATA 2 HDD setup.

I have tried running as Admin, running in compatability mode, running without Win 7 themes, changing processor affinity, tried running in windowed mode, updated nVidia drivers, and disabled PhysX acceleration. Nothing helps even slightly.

I know there are other threads similar to this, but for most of them they at least got into the game at the beginning, I have never made it that far, so I thought I may as well make a new thread and see if anyone has solved a "Mass Effect 2 has stopped working" error similar to this.

Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

Cheers

Sam

Bump. Still no luck guys, Ive tried removing the videos in case they were the problem, but i now crashes faster. Which im assuming means that the problem is in loading the levels (or just the initial level or cinematic)

Those specs should run the game just fine, how many cores is the me2config detecting?

Turn off or unload (completely stop services) your anti-virus/anti-spyware program. This is what is causing the problems.

I wish it were that simply Skater, but at the moment I don't have ANY anti-virus or anti-spyware programs even installed on the computer. It is recently reformatted to Windows 7, and I haven't bothered loading one on yet. Even windows Defender isn't actively running, so it cant even be that.

Do you know of any other process that could be blocking it?

I actually have this exact same issue. Except I'm running a system with the specs below

windows XP
AMD Athlon 64+ 2.4ghz
Nvidia Gforce 7600 GS
2GM system memory

No I'm not expecting it to run smoothly, but it should run. Only thing I can think of is that I've got out of date drivers, or it doesn't like that I have the game installed on a secondary partition

Well mine is installed on the C drive, and I have the newest drivers - for everything. But glad to see someone else is having the same trouble and its not just me.

Not the exact same issue; I can actually play the game - I do get seemingly random "Mass Effect has stopped working", sometimes after playing 5 minutes, sometimes repeatedly, sometimes after 30 minutes.

Extremely annoying.

Not really sure what's going on but I see you use a RAID-0 setup, for my own experience you might have a damaged game file, try to reinstall the game.

Reinstalled 4 times at the moment, so I'm certain the data is all in order, but thanks for the suggestion.

I have a problem something similar except mine just doesn't even load at the start... i can't even get too the main menu or the intro movie, it goes to load then poof the game has crashed...

had the game for a week now and still no luck with it...

As for your problem Samreay, is your CPU over clocked?

i had this exact problem on Red Faction: Gorilla and i solved it by Reducing the overclocked speed of my processor back to normal speeds.

No, its so frustrating, CPU isn't overclocked, nothing is changed, and it still doesn't work. Have you tried removing the videos Bollokov to see if that helps the load?

Hmm well some has reported that uninstalling phys-x before installing the game has fixed some issues, could be worth a try I guess. Other than that the crash issue you have sounds alot like the people are getting when they are trying to play the game on a system with 1 core, which is why I asked how many cores it detects, and windows 7 detects all cores as well?

Try starting the game with this, it should automaticly disable a core and reenable it to fix the load time bug, without having to do it manually.

Well, I tried updating my video drivers and reinstalling the game on my main partition. It seems that this is a loading issue versus a rendering issue, as we're able to access the first menu.

The only similarity I'm seeing on our systems is that its a SATA hard drive, unless there's something I'm missing.I'm going to try some of the single-core fixes, but I'm doubting it'll work.
