2nd) I found this setup on nightmare much easier than my previous one on normal.: Me mage, Wynne, Shale, Oghren. I had thought 2h was no good, but adding oghren boosted the groups versatility alot. Wynne and Oghren are hilarious. He always tries to get some but she shutes him down
I now prefer solo over-all. =D Because you dont just charge a room and use more tactical approaches, it seems the easiest overall, other than when in a boss battle.

I'm developing a real love of 2h this runthrough. Sten's becoming quite a beast.

Quite often I go out for little forays and when I first went to scope out Denerim, I defo took Leliana and Zevran as they are urbanites. I never tell NPCs we meet that I am Grey Warden unless questioned thoroughly and so gives me a nice undercover feel. RtO, I had to take Alistair and as my Approval with Sten is very high and he asked my PC about Ostagar, I took him as long as well.
I will take a pile of mages when doing quests that are based around Magic and so on.
I mix and match with side quests.

<-- Anita, melee rogue (I can't get into archery in DA, maybe bc all I do is fling arrows in my other game)
Alistair-tankage
Morrigan-magic-y stuff and a quick heal if needed
Puppy-damage, stuns, knock-offs, mage eaters
I'll probably stick Oghren in for the dog after I get him, just to get further into the dwarfy RP stuff, lol. Oh and to ****** Morrigan off further. She's finally coming around as an amusing companion, but it's hard keeping her supplied with gifts when every decision I make leads to Morrigan Disapproves -5.

Dristen: PC Rogue Male Dalish
Zevran: Because he is too awsome by far.
Morrigan: Offensive magic rocked even before cone of cold, also great dialogue with Zev
Wynne: I think it's obvious... between her abilities and her dialogues with zevran... oh what fun!
No tank early on, because Alistair and Sten both suck up too many poltices and would get knocked down a lot. Constant babysiting in early battles. Zev starts off with better equipment than my companions had at the time, and was already 2 levels higher than the lot of them, pluss he's fast, dodges blows, can handle a good longbow, mark is usefull as well as other duell weapon skills... and poison making. Then there was the higher level stealth. We did pretty good without a tank. Since my Dalish had an uncanny knack for being the one who gets clustered by the enemies, I equiped him with that Ancient Dalish armor. Worked well enough.
Now I alternate mages depending upon the quest or types of combat I'm anticipating, still bring Zev because he just works too well with Dristen not to bring allong, and Alistair can finally hold his own and has a good crossbow.
I don't really use Lelliana nor Sten. Sten's just too grumpy for my Dalish's liking and Leliana... I though she was cute, when I saw the NPC banter clips on youtube... but somehow she just ended up seeming rather vavid and annoying to me most of the time. And she was only useful ranged. I haven't gotten Ogren and Shale yet. Working on that right now. Really looking forward to Shale.
Funny... I consider my Dalish to actually be a pretty nice, responsible, good will towards all type, but I usually only get -1 or at the very worst -3 from Morrigan so far. And not even very often. It must be because of my practical side, showing mercy and empathy to the bloodmages (though I do not side with them), and when she argues with me she seems satisfied with the point I make when I reason with her. She was my romantic interest at first, but then she got all dificult and stuff, and Zev came along.... I actually intended my Dalish to just be friends with Zev, but given the pattern of behavior I had established for him thusfar, he fell pretty hard and fast for Zevran. No regrets. XD Even though I think I got a grand total of -35 from Morrigan.
I love Wynne. I don't always agree with her, but after some of the camp convo, I understand her well enough to totally respect where she's coming from. Besides, despite her religion and feelings about the circle and templars being necessary, she doesn't hate people like Morrigan, so she's pretty cool. I love that more fiery side of her personality that you get to know after a lot of dialogue. I bet Zevran really would, and I don't blame him. She's pretty cool.
Alistair.... Sometimes I love him because he's Dristen's bro...lol... didn't treat him weird at all when they met, where as everyone else was all 'wtf a Dalish! 0_0 '. Made my character feel right at home even though I often want to smack him when he's being all judgemental and letting the Templar in him do the talking. He's probably too stupid to realize the Dalish have mages whom the Templars would surely deem malificarum if they knew they existed. :-/ I don't like templars. But the guy does have a good sense of humor.

Me (male, dwarf, tank)
Morrigan, healing
Leliana, for opening locks etc
Zevran, he is funny and gay
Later I replaced Zevran sometimes with Alistair, he was respecced to dual wielding warrior.
Now I'm playing with a female city elf rogue. I guess I will use Alistair as tank for now but maybe later will replace hem by Sten, not sure yet. I think I will have Morrigan healing again not sure who will be the 4th maybe weyne as DPS mage or Leliana as ranged DPS. I prefer to have not more then 2 close combat in the party. Close combat people tend to get het by AOE a lot more. So having some ranged and have them stand appart is a tactict I often use.

Others I felt good for traveling with were Alistair, Leliana (if I am not a rogue), Zevran, I don't do much with Sten (though I always take him for the scene outside the tower with Carroll. Freaking hilarious). Mostly my travel choices have to do more with conversations both in background and as cutscenes. I try to use everyone at least a little so I can get the conversations. But my optimum group is:
Wynne (Healer)
Alistair (or Tank PC)
Leliana (or Rogue PC)
Morrigan (or Mage PC)
For battle it all boils down to who will fill what role and I find it optimum for one Tank, DPS (any), Rogue (for locks and traps) and Healer.

Shale - I finally got around to downloading her, so I'm using her to hear her banter (which so far is very entertaining). The only problem I'm having with her is that she seems pretty useless in combat, but that may be because I haven't been able to level her much yet. Low armor + low defense gets her killed really fast, regardless of her high HP. I'm trying to learn her bottom set of talents, though, which seems like it will make her very useful for buffing my party.
I'm way late on this but the Stoneheart tree is the way to tank whith Shale. It gives her a significant armor boost. Pulverizing Blows on the other hand reduces defense and Rock Master hurts both armor and def. I usually set her tactics to have :
self: any -> Stoneheart (ups armor + health regen = better tanking)
self: any -> Precise Striking (so she can hit stuff)
self: any -> Threaten (tanking)
self: HP Drink a health potion
Leliana being attacked by type melee -> Taunt (If Leliana is getting meleed it usually means someone is attacking from the rear or that Shale just needs more aggro)
She can still get into trouble from time to time, and I sometimes drop other defensive stuff on her depending on the party (can set Wynne to drop Heroic Defense if Shale's HP drops under 75% etc.).
The party buff stuff is interesting but it changes her from a tank into a pure support character and since you don't really see her doing much it seems like she's a waste of a party slot if you aren't careful.
Just for the record my current party is
* my Warden (AW Mage)
* Shale (tank)
* Oghren (dps - he taunts if Shale's HP drops too low which helps)
* Leliana (chests & traps)

I have yet to party with Zevran. I'm sure his high dexterity+defense should make him easier to keep alive as a melee fighter.

As for the rest of the party, I always find myself wanting to get away from using Alistair, but I find him to be a terrific tank. On my next play through though, I will likely head to Honnleath first and pick up Shale.
I carry Morrigan on support/damage duty till I get Wynne, then I drop her like a bad habit.
My last slot is tricky. I actually played one game with the Dog till I got Ohgren. It was a seamless transition.

Whynne: My healer/mage
Shale: My Rusher/first defense
Leliana: My stealthy lock picker

Me: Sword and shield Tank, Champion/Reaver
Morrigan: Frost, Entropy, spirit healing/blood magic
Leliana: lock picking, stealth, master archer, arrow of slaying, Ranger/Bard
The 4th slot was my special guest spot. I alternated between
Sten/Ohgren: 2h berserker
Alistair: DW Templar/berserker
Wynne: corpse, I killed her at the tower
Zevran: never brought him out of camp, he is planned for the next playthrough.
Shale: Didn't pick her up until end game, was completely underwhelmed when I tried to make use of her.
My next playthrough is a female mage (creation magic specialist). My plan is
Alistair: shield tank
Morrigan: shapeshifter/ full entropy
Wynne: full Spirit (possibly blood mage just to make her a hypocrite)
Sten: Warrior Archer tank
Leliana: Rogue Archer
Zevran: backstab rogue
Dog: gonna try a mod that makes dog fill the PCs pet slot.
Shale: I'm considering covering her with birdseed on the way out of honnleath.

That's exactly how I'm playing with my rogue PC...Dog/Alistair/Morrigan early, Oghren/Alistair/Wynne later on. I do use others occasionally for specific tasks, but have been disappointed. For example, I brought Zevran for the Dalish elves thinking I'd get some interesting dialogue, but didn't really get all that much. For slightly shady quests in Denerim, I went Leli/Zev/Dog.

Me (female elf mage), Alistair, Sten and Leliana.
What a nightmare (and I was playing normal difficulty), no money, mage build all wrong, constantly reloading due to wipes, did'nt use Mana Clash until the last area before the Archdemon and Leliana's lockpicking skills were abysmal.
Second playthrough, used respec mod and another mod which improved money drops which shall remain nameless.
Me (female human rogue), Alistair, Dog to lvl 12 when I recruited Oghren and Morrigan. (romanced Leliana)
Was a lot more fun, although there were a couple of wipes due to me forgetting to watch health and where Morrigan was running off to get herself killed, used Mana Clash (a LOT) and I did the lockpicking.

Simple group up:
Alistair for tanking. I had him since the beginning of the game.
Wynne for healing. What can I say other than that she is a healer?
Morrigan for DPS. Mage damage is pretty good, plus she can Crowd Control too.
I myself am a DPS as a rogue.
Wynne is only handy for healing. She can't do another thing really great!

Shale: she reminds her of home, and it hilarious. From a playing point of view, Shale is good DPS.
Wynne: brilliant heals, and respects her.
Alistair: her boyfriend and meatshield!
(I occasionally used Morrigan instead of Wynne, but the above four was my preferred.)
Female assassin/duellist rogue Brosca has...
Alistair: they're snark buddies.
Zevran: they LOVAHSSS. Also, he's funny.
Morrigan: she likes and respects Morrigan, and they can exchange "my Mother is a complet b***h!" Stories.
I sometimes mix it up with Sten in the party, and Wynne occasionally healing, but eh. The "get the job done" teams are the ones I've listed for both.)

Arland (PC): Male, Human, Warrior, Dual-Weapon (dumping all my stats into STR, DEX, WIL now that I have a higher CON than everyone else)...he's my death-dealer.
Alistair: I've grown quite fond of the sarcastic, somewhat insecure fellow. Besides, it's always nice to have a templar around when dealing with those pesky blood-mages.
Leliana: Utility archer, not to mention I'm trying to get my PC to love up on her...not the easiest task because I forgot where the flowers are.
Sten: He's a bit of a d***, personality wise, and never likes the decisions I make (even accidentally letting Eamon's wife kill his demon possessed son). But, I feel his abilities complete my team, and no one else thusfar has the STR to use heavy armor.
I'm not a big fan of mages, but I do like bringing Morrigan along every now and then for the damage bonuses she presents as a supporter. Don't have Wynne yet, but I know where to get her, just waiting on Alistair to get cleanse area before setting off on that quest. Just got Shale the other day, and I like the golem's abilities, but he just doesn't "fit". Zevran is too much like my PC in his abilities, but when I need a second archer or stealth I bring him. Sampson (my dog) has been almost permanently put on reserve. He got on my nerves during the origin quest, but I do like to bring him out when going through Denerim...there's just something about him eating Howe's men that's appealing.

However, I sometimes find it frustating to keep Lelianna in the party in major battles, simply because she doesn't stay on task. Generally if you assign her a specific target to take down she will backstab them a couple of times and then leave and chase after a different enemy. Often times I find myself spending to much time micro-managing her in fights. Although I suppose keeping her as an archer is best, but even then I still have to micro-manage her until she takes out that particular enemy. I have lost many battles because of her. Still, I like having her around for beauty sake.
