1. Alistair = Love him
2. Hound = Love him, he is my true Tank
3. Morrigan = Dear friend
4. Wynne = She's just so nice and a good Mage
5. Leliana - If I play as a F Warrior and need a Rogue
what characters do you have with you and why?

w/my rogue, i used alistair (tank), morrigan (CC & backup heals), & Wynne (heals & backup cc)
my rogue was duelist + assassin.
it worked well. but i've been tryin to figure out for DAYS now how to make a 2nd playthrough that i'd enjoy.
the reason is 3 fold.
1: it'd be fun to play again heh.
2: i spec'd wrong, doubly wrong after that patch, i use two longswords on my guy w/lots of str -- he was good and all but obviously not right, now you should use dex + daggers.
3: I CANNOT STAND THE WAY MY ROGUE LOOKS. he from day one has always looked a bit off. i did a poor job. he kinda grins. i hate it. i wanna export a cooler looking character.
so i'm trying to figure out WHAT THE HECK to do for 2nd playthrough. if i made my guy a tank, who the heck would i bring with me? if i went w/mage, a: there'd be like NO GEAR ever in the game for him, cause mages get crap for gear, and b: idk which party members i'd take w/me. i CANNOT decide.

Alistair HAS to be there. No matter what.
Try to take him away and well, you won't return home ever again.
Other than him though, I like Sten if I'm not a warrior.
And Wynne, because well, if they're going to throw a hack into the game I might as well use it.

Normally it's me (human rogue),
Morrigan for dealing damage and cutting remarks,
Wynne as healer,
and either Sten or Shale as tank.

over the course of gaming my style has changed slightly. It is always though
PC: DPS (DW Warrior/Rogue/Mage)
Tank: Alistair
Healer: Wynne
The third at this point has become more a "Who do I want to take with me to round it out situation. Usuually its Zevran or Leliana (for lockpicking if I am not on a rogue) and I found Leli's ranged damage vs survivability is pretty good as she doesn't get in close, she doesn't run out of mana like a mage does also so she has a slight edge over Morrigan. Mostly though it has to do with who has the most amusing dialogues and where I am now. I've taken Sten around, he's a MONSTER with a two hander in hand and played a little more with Oghren.
Also, who I am in a romance with has a slight edge too as I like to travel a lot with that companion as well.

Me: Berserker dual wield warrior
Sten: With berserk
Oghren: More berserking!
Zevran: More dual wield!
Just pop berserk and tear into those pathetic darkspawn, shields are for cowards and so is healing!

The only character who is always in my party if Alistair. We're the two grey wardens who are saving Fereldan together. Besides, the whole 'fighting the blight alone' thing would really suck and be grim without him.
I use the others where logical for their characters and where their skills are particularly needed, which is different by landsmeet than in the early game. At first my strongest party is PC, Alistair, Morrigan and Dog, then PC, Alistair, Morrigan, and Sten. Later in the game, Wynne is as good as Morrigan offensively and Morrigan is an arcane healer. That makes the strongest party PC, Alistair, Wynne, and Morrigan, although that's not the party I take for the final battle. A mage is needed at the gate.
So I guess my party is the PC, Alistair (both Templars, Champions, and Sword and Shield warriors) and two others.

On main, me being a mage, i play as the main healer/cc/debuffer of the party, have experience as one during my days on mmo's, so can react and judge cooldowns better then A.I party healer.
Leliana is always in my party, as range dps, or melee dps depending on set up.
Of late, Alistair, started to like him alot more of late (prob cause of the fans on the forums, and topics i keep reading) who acts as my tank.
Last spot is random, depending on which place i go too.
With me as a tank on my 2nd Char, its same line up but with Alistair as dw warrior, Leliana as ranger, Morrigan as healer/cc/off hand dps.

Me: DW berserker/champion
Ohgren: Who doesn't love the happy dance? Gave him reaver and he healed himself.
Leliana: Rogue archer. Ranger fits better with an archer to me.
Morrigan: Prefer her personality to Wynne. The mages were the only ones I used the respec mod on. Some of the spells they came with, I'd never use.
Alistair doesn't make a good tank for me. Even though he has a higher defense, better armor rating, and faster attacks than Ohgren, everything eats him for lunch- even normal critters. I even tried giving him medium armor so things would come after my character- no dice. They wanted Alistair's head on a pike.
edit: Let me clarify that before something bad happens.. Before I even have time to react and heal him, he's dead. And I don't get why, here's his equipment:
Topsider's Honor (Dragonbone)
Fade Wall
Dragon Blood Set.
Don't remember what accessories he has.

Alistair, Oghren and Zevran are my usual team for a mage. I use Alistair because I just like him as a character and it feels more natural to the game (the way I play) that the two of you would stick together. Oghren, well, the guy kills the wife he's been searching for for two years to stand by my side, that's pretty dang loyal for someone you just met before heading out to find said wife. Plus a little meta-game knowledge from Awakenings never hurts. Zevran, well, I don't really like either rogue that much, but someone's got to open those containers for me. My rogue swapped out Zevran for the Wynne safety net, but I'm reconsidering that and plan my next rogue swapping out Zevran/Wynne for the dog.

First playthrough
Main character (Mage, Spirit Healer, Arcane Warrior; mostly spirit spells) for ranged DPS and healer roles.
Leliana (Rogue, Bard, Ranger; Archery) for ranged DPS and traps/locks roles (and romance).
Alistair (Warrior, Templar, Champion; Sword and Shield) for tank role.
The fourth member filled the melee DPS role and varied between Sten and Oghren and Zevran, depending on how I felt.
Second playthrough
Main character (Dalish Elf Rogue, Duellist, Assassin; Dual Weapon) for melee DPS and traps/locks roles.
Morrigan (Mage, Shapeshifter, Spirit Healer; Primal and Elemental) for ranged DPS and healer roles (and romance).
Shale for melee DPS and tank roles.
Sten (Warrior, Berserker; Dual Weapon) for melee DPS role and to wear the heavy armour (since I hate the thought of it going to waste) and for humerous banter with Morrigan ("You will need armor, I think. And a helmet. And something to bite down on. How strong are human teeth?").

HFN Rogue:
Alistair (love interest & it feels more natural to fight together as two Gray Wardens against the odds)
Wynne
Zevran
Female Elf Mage:
Alistair/Oghren/Sten/Leiliana (depending on quest)
Wynne for healing
Zevran
Zevran is the only character that has been in every party in every playthrough. I use Morrigan only for the first quest then leave her at camp with the occasional outing for travelling. I use tomes to build up Zevran's lockpicking skills and equipment I swap in for raising cunning. Leiliana is used solely for stealing and archery. Shale is never used outside of her personal quest.

When I'm playing my HF Rogue:
Shale - A brick wall to hide behind
Dog - To lick blood off me before a screenshot
Morrigan/Oghren - One of these 2, but depends on the situation
When I'm an EF Mage
Shale - as above
Leliana - Opens boxes and disables traps
Dog/Alistair/Oghren - Another thing to hide behind

Regardless of my PC, Alistair and Shale are always with me. I'll often skip through Lothering the first time, pick up Shale, and then go on the rest of my questing. I usually play as a mage, but sometimes as a rogue.
The fourth character varies. In one through, I only had Shale, Alistair, and Dog, so I wasn't given much variety. Depending on my mood, either Dog or Oghren take my fourth slot. Should I bother to pick up Leliana, I'll rotate her in if I know I'm going somewhere with a lot of chests, or to do the Crime Wave sidequest.

just started a new charcter I think my party will look like this:
Alistair tank
Morrigan healing
Leliana ranged dps
me DPS mage
btw I woudn't know how to play the game without a respec mod. I don't like Wynne for healing she is to much of a whining ****.

as DW Warrior:
Alistair
Lelianna
Morrigan
as Mage:
Alistair
Lelianna
Sten
But there are so many great combos, I like to swap alternates in for short periods...the quality & number of companions is probably the best thing about this game.

I use the Extra Dog Slot mod; I never like being without Dog. Cute comic relief and combat support, doesn't get better.
Power Party:
Lelliana, respec mod used to make her a high quality dual weapon DPSer.
Morigan. Great dialogs with almost everyone, and she can be fine tuned into a first rate combat caster or a back up tank.
Wynne. Some fun dialogs, healing, some combat casting, can be made into an AW for use as a support tank.
Good Guys Party:
Alistair - Many great dialogs, a good "best friend" for a male character or love interest for a female, useful tank.
Wynne - As above, great spell support and after level 14 a support tank.
Lel - As above.
Challenge Party:
Shale - Powerful in the early game, holds her own mid game, not as strong near the end game. Good at drawing agro and surprisingly good utility "Mage", with a range of neat abilities for CC. Some of the best dialog in the game.
Sten - Good at drawing agro, OK DPSer, good dialog.
Oghren - OK for DPS, some utility as an off tank, entertaining dialog.

I have my goody two shoes group of Alistair, Leliana, and Wynne collected again now. Main is female elf mage romancing Leliana.
As I had, in the past, started like half a douzen of parallel walkthroughs and installed a ***-load of mods until the game turned buggy AND I lost motivation, I am now determined to stricly avoid starting a second walkthrough or installing ANY mods until I'm finally finished the game at least once.
My "other" party in my evil male elf mage walkthrough (the one I had finished the most) was Ohgren, Zevran and Morrigan (romance). As always, I quite sucked at being evil.
Of course there is hardly anyone really "goody two shoes" or "downright evil" in this game. No Aerie, Keldorn, or Imoen, neither Edwin, Viconia, or Korgan here.
