My friends and I have all been playing Mass Effect 2 a lot, we have all beaten ME1 many times, have many save files imported, most of us have the novels and art books... one thing we keep talking about is having a pen and paper Mass Effect RPG to let us play in the world in multiplayer, kinda allow us to create a squad of our own making given the races and lore used in the ME universe.  There's a lot of material already thanks to the ingame codex, but there's not enough to run a full PnP RPG.  There's no official core book or anything to go by in terms of system (we could always modify Dragonstar, or maybe SLA Industries, but it wouldn't be the same as something from the ground up)

Given that Green Ronin is releasing the Dragon Age RPG soon (or maybe they have already). I am hoping Bioware might get a Mass Effect core-book out there sometime within the year or so, though I doubt it.

It's either that or use GURPS

A fan made one does exist but its kinda stupid in my opinion as it doesn't really cover most of the stuff from the game. Just racial mods, rules for overheating and that was about it.

Hmm, seems my friends and I might have to pave the way for decent one then, hopefully anyway.

Given troubles between Hasbro and Atari, they would probably have to make a completely new system to use if they did, no D20. Bioware made games for DnD under the Atari publishing licence, so bad blood would probably seep over.

They could go with White Wolf for all I care (though that would be limiting it almost entirely to storytelling), perhaps even one of the dual-d10 systems like SLA Industries would work. They could also use the D20 system under the OGL.

I'm actually working on a side conversion for another tabletop game I'm writing for Mass Effect. It had a lot of the same general principles as Mass Effect with the combat and social aspects of the game being approached individually.

The core system is under playtesting currently, and the changes for the Mass Effect version is much less writing intensive than the game it is primarily designed for.

hmm, I hope you can keep my friends and I updated then. If you need more play testers we could run a few sessions too.

Haven't read the Green Ronin ones... I won't be surprised if they'd do a PNP product in the future, they'll get my money.

Well they did a Dragon Age one so it's obviously something Bioware doesn't mind doing. I think I'd rather they stayed away from the oh so boring D20 system though and did something more fitting the the universe. The Eclipse Phase writers would do a brilliant job..

This isn't the first thread about this, and it isn't the first time I've mentioned working on this; given the long weekend and Ragnarok occurring as we speak I'll try and get a beta release out this weekend for those brave enough to play an unfinished and likely unbalanced version of the game.

Well it may be a good idea to playtest it over irc or an im, be easier to find people interested that way.

I usually playtest Friday evenings in person with friends. One of the major problems with that is that I know exactly how everything works. If something isn't clear if may not get fixed right away.

one of the ways you could do it is release a PDF or other such format of the rules and such. obviously this does bring security concerns into play... NDAs or even editing the beta document with some identifying header/footer for each person you want to beta might work too.

My plan was to put it into a PDF. Distribution is still up in the air. I'm not too concerned about security, if they need to gizank my system to make a game I can't imagine what they do make will be very high quality.

Three step Mass Effect RPG Conversion System:

Step 1: Get a copy of Star Wars Saga Edition
Step 2: Cross out "The Force" and "Jedi", write in "Mass Effect" and "Biotic"
Step 3: Enjoy.

(Optional Step 4: Realize I am just joking. :))

In truth, I would love an ME:RPG. I'll be getting the DA:RPG when (and if) I ever see it for sale. From the first few moments of playing the first ME I kept thinking what an awesome tabletop RPG it would make and how much I wanted to play it.

@Drake_2009: Pencil and paper. While not technically accurate its often used to describe tabletop role playing games. http://en.m.wikipedi...le-playing_game sorry for The mobile link, by the way

@Sulaco: hopefully what I come up with will fit the bill. Also, you forgot tech.

"Hi, Kettle? This is Pot: you're black!"

@ topic: anyone play Paizo's PATHFINDER? I suspect the rules there may be flexible enough to allow a wide variety of skills on top of the combat mechanics.

 Haven't played it, however . . .

Well, Dragon Age is getting a tabletop game from Green Ronin. Maybe Green Ronin will be licensed to make a Mass Effect ruleset. I sure hope so. Having to house rule the bejeesus out of Spirit of the Century, or worse yet, D20, is not an effort I'm looking forward to.
