I want to play with Morrigan in my party. Really, I do. But I find her exceedingly useless with many wasted talent points. Perhaps because she is still level 7 and has not come into her own yet... I don't know. Maybe you can help.

Right now my party layout is 2H DPS Warrior (me), Tank (Alistair), Rogue (Leliana), and Mage (Morrigan). I did just pick up Wynne and am replacing Morrigan with Wynne until I can get Morrigan some decent spells.

So here is my dilemma. First of all, despite Alistair wearing steel armor and using Shield Defense, he seems to be taking a LOT of damage for a tank. I am going through health potions faster than I can find/buy/make them. Now I did make a minor mistake spending attribute points, I put too many points in Con and not enough in Strength, so he was not able to wear the 22/23 str required armor until his most recent level. That does seem to have helped. No complaints with my 2H warrior, she is doing excellent damage. Also, Leliana is fairly useful. She does decent damage with her bow, and I can use her to split pulls from range, not to mention having lockpicking is nice. But Morrigan... I don't know, maybe it's just my group layout. I use all of her abilities - horror, AE stun, the ice root/snare, hex, etc etc - but she's barely doing any damage, and meanwhile my guys are getting clobbered. The crowd control she does have never seems to last long enough.

So here is my dilemma - How do I spend her next talent points to make her useful? I have narrowed to two choices (though if I am missing something, feel free to suggest it). For the next two levels should I get Sleep and Waking Nightmare or should I pick up Cone of Cold and Blizzard instead? Is the AE crowd control more powerful than the single target versions? Would the AE damage from Cone of Cold and Blizzard be difficult to use in a melee group, and is the damage any good? Which one meshes better with a mostly melee group?

If the next level or two proves her useful to me, I may switch Morrigan back into my group and get rid of the rogue. Though I will have to see how having Wynne healing works out.

Any advice is welcome.

1. Morrigan is not a damage dealer until you get her to higher levels. Make sure she always has frost weapons on.

2. As for your talent picks, all of the above. Sleep is one of the best crowd control options in the game as long as you can control your party and make them all attack one target. Cone of Cold needs to be positioned, but with your set up you can get two shatters out of it. Have Morrigan cast CoC on a group, use Overpower from Alistair and Might Blow from your PC. Walking Nightmare isn't that good.

Blizzard is a powerful spell, but all the mobs run from it, so I found it much more useful after Morrigan got sleep. Several times, I've cas Blizzard then cast Sleep and 80% of the mobs died while my heroes stood around doing nothing.

You're still going to need a healer though.

one of the good skills i found for Allistair is the shield block (reqs 20 dex?). as the tank he tends to get surrounded. this removes some of the flanking bonus. get the heal spell on Mor, its the first one and will help allot. She is my main CC, sleep stun, cone of cold etc... ill probably take paralyze ward with her next.

Cone of Cold is defiantely the first skill u should let her pick once she lvls, it has surprizngly good success rate even on end game bosses, the main use for cone of cold is to combine shatter, depends on who is in ur group, but all classes / builds has garantee crit / shatterable spells.

2h spec critical strike, archer critical shot, swordshield has overpower, and stonefist /crushing prison as spells, if u decide to go for this route ur best setup is Mindblast on initial Contact, position urself for a CoC, shatter 3-4 enemies. repeat in 10 seconds.

There is another spell u can pick up in 2 lvls or so, "SLeep", it is an aoe CC with no friendly dmg, combined with walking nightmare u have some serious CC going on.

Or u can go for AOE build, although this will require some lvls to work, Specing towards Storm of the Century combo will pretty much kill every random trash encounters.

I havent found shapeshifting to be of any use, skip the tree.
