While playing ME 2 I often get the impression that either a different writer than in ME 1 was used or the game was forced to stand on its own with the connections to ME 1 being added because Bioware had to and not because it should always have been a part of it.
I like ME 2, I think the story is great BUT I'm missing the feeling of it being a sequel. I always hoped ME 1 and ME 2 would intertwine more fluidly that it would be one story. But ME 2 feels more like a separate story.
I think this is mainly due to the fact that former crew members and the Alliance itself don't seem to care about Shepard being alive, being a part of Cerberus or the overall threat. Or Shepard becoming a part of Cerberus so fast. This doesn't fit with ME 1.
Meeting Ashley on Horizon for example. She seemed like a totally different woman. Her reaction to seeing Shepard (whom she loved in my version of ME 1) was ice cold. Turning his back on him wasn't how I remember her.
Meeting Anderson on the Citadel was similar. He and Shepard were friends yet he didn't care that Shepard was alive.
The Alliance ignoring the threat... if they don't care for the safety of the Galaxy, why didn't they ignore the threat of the Geth, too?

I think and fear that this will be similar with ME 3. Let's take the romance for example. Ashley and Shepard were in love in my version of ME 1. Yet in ME 2 I'm feeling forced to take another woman, as Ashley has next to nothing to do in the game. Now if ME 3 will introduce new characters again to stand on its own, will I be forced into a new romance again? Will my old team mates ignore me again, don't care about me?

There seems to be something wrong with the telling of the story. The seperate stories are great but ME 2 to me doesn't feel like a continuation, like just turning the page after finishing the "chapter" ME 1 to read on.
