@guise709; Obviously you don't play enough video games if you think the "Ultimate Sacrifice" ending isn't predictable and overused. Game Over. Try again.

He will realize that he has done everything he can possibly do, and that nothing he does in the remaining century of his life will matter nearly as much as what he's done so far. He will also realize that long, hard service to sentient life doesn't pay the bills. He will then either lead a mundane life as a janitor or telemarketer because none of the skills he has honed in saving the galaxy have any application in the civilian world, or he will enter a PTSD-induced depression and drink himself into an early grave.

Name any game of note where the protagonist straight out dies with no possibility of him coming back and carry some sort of impact. The only one I can think of at the top of my head is Dragon Age.

Maybe Fallout 3 although I heard in the Broken Steel DLC they give a reason why your char comes back to life or so I heard.

Terranigma, way back on the SNES. The protagonist must kill the very thing that sustains his existance to save the world.
Was done far better back then than any of today's ultimate sacrifice cliches if you ask me. Which you didn't. But I'm telling you anyway!

No they just retconned the lethality of the radiation. Turns out it just puts you in a coma for a week or two.

if it were up to me, there wouldnt be enough left of cerberus to dust off your jacket lapel.. The alliance would get a frikkin clue and the collectors, having been abandoned by the reapers would join forces with shepheard and the alliance to destroy the reapers, giving shepheard a wide open end to the story that allows for future growth and adventure..

I'm actually thinking hard on games where the protagonist dies not just makes some kind of ultimate sacrifice that cost millions of lives. I guess thiers Final Fantasy X where Tidus dies although I forgot how and why something to with Sin I don't know.

Tidus died cause they ripped off Terranigma.. I mean Tidus had to kill the very thing that sustained his existance to save the world.. yep.
Why do I remember this stuff, sheesh.

I believe the protagonist of Persona 3 ends up in a coma and dies after the events of the game.

@guise709; There are actually too many games for me to list just to amuse you. But the fact remains that the ultimate sacrifice is cliche, overused and terribly easy to predict.

So to fix this here is my scenario for the next game:
Shepard is inside of the leader of the reapers alone. He has fought his way through to the core of the vessel. He is armed with a bomb made of dark matter. Badly wounded he goes to detonate the bomb, then the reaper sends a spear like weapon goes through his body. Its Garrus He can't let the humans save the galaxy. He betrays you he goes to detonate the bomb and leave you there to die. "It was a good run old friend", he says , but full of adrenaline u won't let him leave. So u pull out the spear. And with no one in the universe watching the two tango fist to fist, the last battle for both and they r never seen again. No one knew where shepard went but the illusive man and he sent Garrus after him , apparently humanity doesn't need a shepard. "scene"

WTF?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!  That makes NO sense.

Maybe it's because everybody's actually on hallucinogens and don't actually have guns.

Personaly I'd like to see shep live as I really hated the fallout 3 ending (before it was overturned) Also I didn't play Dragon age due to the same kinda feeling (spoilers did the spoilin),

As for the "ultimate sacrifice is cliche" its all very Martrix, gladiator, aliens 3, hero, house of flying daggers, 300, etc etc. which has its place but I don't think for shep.

All in all I hope there are a number of endings. so we can all feel happy with the end of a good trilogy of games. So those that want to blow up can do so, but me I'll be training up new spectors.

One JUST came out that ended with the protagonist dying. I don't want to spoil anyone but there ya go.

Assuming Shepard survives I wouldn't want him to return as the protaganist in any future Mass Effect titles, as much as I do love the character. If he did return I would hope it would be as an NPC in a Captain Anderson role, with the player taking control of a new hero.

I kind of hope Shepard goes out guns blazing at the end of ME3 though, dying heroically and taking the entire Reaper Fleet with him.

I'm trying to think of games where the protagonist dies and the only one that comes to mind besides Dragon Age is Final Fantasy X. There are so few main stream games where this event occures where the good guy goes down.

On that note if they do make it so a Shepard goes down or can go down then it should be tragic.

I think there should be sacrafice in the ending, but not Shepard. There should be one last thing that has to be done with a squad of 3 (not including Shepard) that includes the 3 dying, but Shepard (we) get to choose which 3 party members will be in the sacrificed squad. Also all squadmates from both games should be usable in part 3 depending on who lived in your own story. Then have a couple choices of what Shepard does and what he asks of his squadmates now that the Reaper threat would be over. Hopefully with a settling down option with the LI & some reason for your best buddies to hang around too. Maybe a choice of 2 other squadmates of choice to keep around for some reason too?
