The Reapers remind me of 18th century Europeans and 21 st century Americans/white guys, in that they think they're better than everyone else thanks to some gadgets they've largely sequestrated off other people, they think they should be running the galaxy on account of their gadgets, and are willing and happy to entirely exterminate other races and peoples in order to get their grubby mitts on other peoples assets.

And they don't remind you of ****s (N.A.Z.I.S) because...?

Well, I thought I had that covered - half the USA white population is descended from Germanic peasantry - it's in the blood, you know, and 'white guys' generally covers the rest, doesn't it?

I know, it's alternately laugh-out loud funny and disgraceful at the same time, isn't it? The central hypothesis of this thread seems based on the idea that Bioware couldn't simply have, y'know, invented these peoples at all, no, what instead happened is that they lazily cut-and-pasted their 'races' together from pre-existing racial stereotypes instead. Scandalous, really, and so utterly cheapening of the creative process that I'm left stunned.

well, most things tend to be inspired form things around them, life imitating art and what not, so im sure they had real world influences, like ripping off halo"s assault rifle :alien:

Here is my take:

Volus: Dwarves
Quarians: Elves
Krogan: Orcs
Salarians: Goblins
Asari: Wizards
Turians: Not sure.

A dwarf would whoop a volus' ****.  the only thing they have in common is height.

Scandalous? Disgraceful? What is this bombastic outrage?

The thread title happens to be what races, ethnic, or religious groups do Mass Effect aliens remind you of. It invites people to share their opinion on what the races of Mass Effect remind them of. No-one is necessarily saying that Bioware operated entirely from stereotype in producing their concepts, nor is anyone necessarily stating that any stereotypes invoked are universally true - infact, no-one is saying anything more really than what the aliens remind them, personally of.

Simply put, it is a discussion thread. If you're offended by a discussion, don't participate in it.

I don't know whether to see this post as simply vacuous or mischievously disingenuous. So I'll settle for both. This thread is like a debate on the subject 'Given that the earth is flat, is it more square to you or rectangular?' In other words, the initial premise is false, and the precepts are false too, and for that reason it's not a debating point. It's got nothing to do with freedom of speech, liberty or the rest of the fatuous nonsense that's trotted out (usually by white americans), to defend it as a reasonable debating point against liberals, and everything to do with the fact it encourages people to think about the world in a way that we know to be false.<3

What premise? There is no premise in this thread. It is asking for people's opinions.

It doesn't encourage people to think about the world in anyway. It asks people what ethnic and religious groups the species of Mass Effect remind them of.  Indeed, this encourages enquiry. People have been debating what the species in Mass Effect remind them of, and consequently been scrutinising general stereotypes.

I'd also like to point out that whilst I am unsure whether your little complaints about white americans are serious, or supposed to be some sort of trap where you accuse people that respond to it negatively as being hypocritical - I am not American, and I am actually - or do consider myself, in general a liberal.

Batarian's remind me of any extremist group, nothing about them speaks "Muslim" to me unless you're American.

Still don't see where people see "Jews" from Volus

And I'm not sure what real world ethnicity the Quarians are based off of, I can see the Gypsy part but their language can't figure out.

I believe he thought the connection Gypsies - Quarians was due to being Nomads, always travelling and Jews - Volus was regarding the importance of Money and Trading.

The premise in the question, can't you see it?

It doesn't encourage people to think about the world in anyway. It asks people what ethnic and religious groups the species of Mass Effect remind them of.

Thus, directing them to think of the world in simplistic, seperatist, racially-defined ways.

Indeed, this encourages enquiry.

Of a false kind.

People have been debating what the species in Mass Effect remind them of, and consequently been scrutinising general stereotypes.

By thinking of people in terms of racial stereotypes.

I'd also like to point out that whilst I am unsure whether your little complaints about white americans are serious,

Of course I'm serious. This thread is notable for the only race not being featured in stereotypical ways being the so-called 'white race'. (Another false idea).

or supposed to be some sort of trap where you accuse people that respond to it negatively as being hypocritical - I am not American, and I am actually - or do consider myself, in general a liberal.

No, it isn't. You're going to have to tell me what 'premise' you are referring to.

Don't be ridiculous. If people sincerely come out of this thread believing that all stereotypes as a consequence of this are valid, then they already had that tendency originally. The thread no more entrenches blanket perceptions than any thread that asks you to reference real life with the game.

By thinking of people in terms of racial stereotypes.

Do you seriously believe that people come out of this thread with the newly held belief that all stereotypes of any culture, religion or ethnic group is valid? People are debating, as you are, whether these stereotypes are valid. People have referenced Islam, Judaism and Gypsies to refer as influences of the Quarian and other users have been criticising these references.

Of course I'm serious. This thread
is notable for the only race not being featured in stereotypical ways
being the so-called 'white race'. (Another false idea).

And no-one in this thread has to my knowledge referred to any species in Mass Effect as being 'black', either. What's your point?

Militarily, Salarians remind me of Israel. A small, pfrofessional army, relying on fast attacks, bigger partners and a highly efficient intel system.

Systems Alliance's USA all the way.

Turians remind me of Japs but not sure.
