Mordin reminds me of my Chinese best friend, but salarians as a whole don't really remind me of Asians, or any other real-world culture, for that matter. Turians remind me of Romans, and krogans are like Germanic/Nordic barbarian warrior cultures.

Yes, i thought a bit of Mossad as well when regarding Mordin. A combination of Mossad and Japanese ingenuity.

Samara = Jedi or The Old Templar Knights

Turians felt kinda Samurai-ish. (Feudal Japan)

Krogans = Mongols / Vikings

Okay, I'm going to ignore most of the ignorant/racist comments here...and make some of my own.

Asari - Japanese/Geisha's. I don't know what it is, exactly - but maybe it's the mix of being that sort of sultry, lithe warrior thing. Mix a Geisha with a Samurai with blue skin and you've got an asari.

Quarians - Yes, the wandering nomadic lifestyle they have instantly brings to mind the stereotypical Gypsies but I was actually going to say they seemed a lot more Hebrew than anyone else - especially the Volus. Though, the majority of their accents are Eastern European.

Salarians - Only because of the quick thinking, really intelligent thing brings to mind the stereotypical Asian math nerd. Also, their eyes have the stereotypical slant to them.

Krogans - I'm not sure I can quite place these guys, from the outset they just seem like barbarians so I want to place them in a category like the Barbarian Mongols, fits with the whole Horde threatening to take over the world thing, I guess. I'll leave it as the Mongols for now.

Turian - Well, their names obviously bear resemblances to Imperial Roman names, and they heirarchy is similar and all turians seem to have the discipline and teachings of a typical Roman military unit. Relating to the whole Italian thing, a lot of turians seem to have the Italian-American accent down too.

Batarian - First thing comes to mind is a Muslim extremist group, but that's probably because my mind has been poisoned by TV and the Media than any actual knowledge - that and any Batarian we've ever seen wants to destroy Humanity "just because" and Humanity in ME representing Western Civilization, my first thought doesn't seem far off.

Volus - Dunno about these guys, because of the whole accounting thing apparently instantly makes them "Space Jews" but I don't think I know enough about them to make a judgement.

Drell - From the main rep of the species, Thane Krios, it would seem that the drell relate heavily to ancient Greek culture - but their spirituality is a lot more similar to modern Hindu or Buddhist groups.

Hanar/Elcor - No idea.

Vorcha - Space goblins.

To quote Chuck Sonneberg:

Some people say [Volus] are Jewish, because they're good with business and are short, which goes to say about how ridiculous some people can be. (...) I don't know why, but people seem to take one or two traits from the ME races and then conclude that they represent some kind of race here. I think probably the worst is the Batarians, I can't believe what goes on with them. There have been two terrorist attacks on the games by Batarians and there is one Batarian we saw who is a religious nut. And he didn't actually do anything, he just stood on a box with the HUD saying "Mad Prophet". And that makes them Arabs. Because the Arabs are famous for having a caste system, right? Arabs withdrew from the UN and routinely invade other countries for slaves, right?
Batarians are no more religious than the other races, so that leaves terrorism. And it's pretty damn racist to say "Terrorism = Arabs".
(...)
Now let's go back to the Quarians, where all the women have their faces covered and therefore must be Arabs.

Ah, identity politics and labelling people, doncha just love it? Happily I think they did an excellent job at avoiding putting stereotypes of any RW ethnicity or religion into the ME species, and even making it clear that there's as much variation of personalities within an alien species as there is within our own, or even within one of our ethnic groups or religions. For instance, asari are the game's wise and spiritual advisors/hot blue alien chicks, but they're encountered as senior mercs (Miranda's loyalty mission), liars and murderers (Thane recruitment mission and LotSB), traitors (LotSB and ME1) and half the biotic mooks you have to take out. Also prostitutes and pole dancers for those who have a moral objection to that kind of thing, and of course not above a bit of asari on girl action for those who object to that as well.

Quarians? Well, there's Tali who is intelligent and helpful and basically the nice girl from next door with a faceplate, but then there's her father and his team who were reckless, Prezza and his team who were untrustworthy and ignored Tali's orders, and at least half the Admiralty board are idiots. I could go on and give examples of individual character variation in turians, hanar, volus, salarians, krogan and so on. Even with the geth we know that there's a factional split, and that's despite them not being true individuals anyway (until part way through ME3 at least). About the only species we haven't seen enough of to know one way or the other are the drell and yahg (though there's some anecdotal evidence about the yahg), and the only one where all individuals are kind of the same are the pre-spaceflight vorcha, and thanks to their unique biology they really aren't comparable with any group, real or artificial, in real life.

Bottom line, yeah, you can seize on aspects of certain characters in the game and say that it means they're like this or that group, but at best it's ignoring that there's likely to be much more to it in a species of millions or billions and at worst it's cherry picking traits from a species where the evidence of variety is right there in the game. Even with a species like the vorcha how many have we come across and how many are there likely to be, and does the fact that we're often going up against Blood Pack mercs have something to do with the fact that most of the vorcha we meet are bad guys?
