They don't listen to Shepard for the same reasons that our real life politicians don't listen to us. That is because they are far more educated than we are in general. The politicians ability to ignore the populous transcends species. In fact they will continue to do so until we do something about them and to do that we will have to start with the lawyers. I let the council fend for themselves partially because I figured that the Destiny Decention had a bit more tail than they proved they had, and partly cause a dead Politician is the only good politician. More accurately the only one that you can trully trust.
Wow, that's naive. They don't listen to Shep not because they're smarter than him, but because what he's warning them of is a threat to their power. People in power want to keep the power they have and acquire more.
That and the basic Human nature to simply not be able to wrap your mind around a literal apocalypse.
For those reasons, nothing short of seeing the Citidel surrounded by the entire REaper fleet will convince them.
I reread my post very carefully, and nowhere did I see that I said that the councilors were smarter. I said that they were more educated. Education and intelligence are 2 completely different things.
People that get their education at Harvard, Yale, or Cambridge will go way the hell out of their way to explain to you that you aren't ship, what's more they will continue to "prove" that you will never amount to anything even resembling ship.
I went on to further explain that to them, Shepard and his team were nothing but pawns to them. The more power you have the tighter your focus or the bigger the blinders are. I will agree that education and common sense., are different like apples are from oranges.
All that said I believe that we are argueing 2 sides of the same point.
