I've recently started Mass Effect 2 after finishing the first game, and I'm kind of confused with all these different powers for the squad.
Being so used to ME1's system, I already find myself having trouble with the build of my Soldier Shep lol.
Does anyone have tips about what powers I could best level for squad mates? I'm terrified to mess up and have everyone dying on me lol.
Thanks in advance, it's really appreciated, because right now I don't dare to level anything up lol.

If you're really worried save your game right before a mission, crank it up to insanity, spend some points and see how it turns out. that way you can reload if it's not working.

Max out one, take the other to half, and then put points into the locked ability if you think it's useful, otherwise put those points back into the 2nd ability..

You want to max the skills that remove defenses that you can't remove. If you are a soldier it doesn't really matter since you get the various Ammo types. But a good rule of thumb is to get the skills that complement your character.
For example as an Infiltrator I get Incinerate (Armor + Stop HP Regen). I would then want a character in my group that could remove shields (Overload) and barriers (Warp). That way you have all the various defenses covered.
EDIT: The above is more important for higher difficulties where almost everything has some type of defense (sometimes multiple types defense).

Oh thanks, that makes sense. I have no clue which skill would be handy, so your post was very useful, hgroce15.
I'm playing on the normal difficulty, no insanity for me yet lol, I first need to figure things out a bit.

Good powers for squad mates:
Miranda: Heavy Warp/Overload and her passive buff are all good. Do NOT bother with Slam, at least not if playing on Insanity.
Jacob: He sucks, but his one niche (to me) is getting him Squad Incind Ammo early and using him for that until you have access to Warp/ArP ammo. Pull is decent, but you don't need more than 1-2 points in it.
Garrus: Heavy Overload. Later, ArP ammo. His passive isn't bad if you have points to burn.
Zhaed: His passive is really good. Squad Disrupter Ammo is worth thinking about.
Grunt: Great passive, makes him almost unkillable. Can be a replacement for Jacob as a provider for Squad Incind Ammo, but by now you might already have access to Warp/ArP ammo.
Jack/Tali/Legion: Not a fan of any of these. Jack's Warp Ammo is good...tried maxing the drone with Tali but wasn't impressed. /shrug.
Thane: Heavy Warp. Passive is also good. His ammo is very so-so, only works vs. health.
Samara: REAVE. IS. AMAZING. Passive is decent.
Morinth: Can't comment, I took Samara.
Morrin: Heavy Incinerate, and his passive.
