Thanks.  What was in Mordin's dialogue about Kirrahe that telegraphs it?  I don't remember what he says.

I think it was basically that Kirrahe is big on speeches and teamwork - he himself on the other hand, is more of a lonewolf.

He didn't say he was a lone wolf.

The idea that Cerberus types would be good leaders is pretty dumb.  Miranda, especially considering she says "the best leader needs to command loyalty through experience" and is subsequently called a cheerleader and derided by Jack.  Lame-sauce.

i will have to disagree. Miranda did lead the Lazurus project for 2 years, and that turned out pretty successful I think.

Anyways, i sent Mordin back with the rest of the crew and he lived. But i did use Garrus and Grunt as my squad mates and the line held with no deaths.

You can send Tali too. Both the tech and biotic roles can be fulfilled by a choice two squad members. Fire team leader role can be done by three.

My maleshep romanced her in my second playthrough and it really adds to the sense of urgency to hear your LI pleading and screaming for help as she burns up in the vents :)

Haha, I'd imagine so; I was feeling guilty for doing my usual chilling back and sniping during that portion even when she wasn't my LI, hearing her panic.  Not looking forward to reaching that portion on insanity, where I'll probably be forced to press the time limit far closer than before.

This is a no-brainer. You have to pick your crew according to their strengths. Based on their strengths, you are you going to pick to lead? Obviously Garrus and Jacob are top choices, I'd pick Miranda as a third choice only because nobody likes her. Your tank is Grunt. So you have two chosen to stay behind already. Now you need to pick who has best combat/AR ability to stay. I send Mordin back with the crew because that seems like the most obvious choice to me based on their in game personality and skills.

Weird, I always had Grunt go back with the crew. And took Zaeed and Jack with me to fight the boss, and Mordin never died. Maybe Im just lucky.

Probably a borderline case. The first time I did the suicide mission I had Zaeed go back with dr Chakwas (the only one of the crew still alive). Then I took Grunt and Legion with me to the boss fight, and Mordin died. It surprised me because I had recruited every possible squad member and made them all loyal. I think that Mordin lived in your playthrough because you took Jack, who according to Dusty Everman is squishy, with you.

That's probably it, though I like to believe that Mordin lived because of my deeply moving speech. Posted Image

Someone should make a guide for this.

Mordin tends to die because he didn't pay attention to Kirrahe's "Hold the Line!" speeches. :P

OK,OK - read this thread several times and finally have to ask the question: Am I the only one (X-box player) who did ALL the loyalty missions - used Garrus as the first team leader, sent Mordin in the vents only to watch Mordin die as we closed the doors BEFORE the "Hold the Line" sequence and final teams were picked?

Everyone else survived including the crew who I sent back with Legion.

Mordin shouldn't go through the vents.

Ok, I'm going to add to the OP and make this a general suicide mission guide, because that might help more.

This is interesting. Has there been any new word about who these "hold the line squadmates" are? Or perhaps someone released a hold the line priority list?

I made Jacob the leader for the second team and everyone survived (didn't try it with the first team)

I don't get why people assume that Mordin dying when chosen to go through the pipes and then gets shot even when loyal is a glitch, he's a biologist not a techy, it's pretty obvious that he's not suited for the task.

I think that I have heard before that he also works as a leader, I just forgot him.  Adding him to OP as possible leader.

I am not saying it's a glitch, just asking.  :)

I'm more than willing to accept that according to his makeup, experiences etc:

1) he suffers greatly due to the heat stress encountered while in the vents and as such
2) is too weak to close the door quickly.
3) which unfortunately left him vulnerable to the stray shot.- which killed him

That's ok, it simply means loyalty and tech specialist capability does not guarantee survival - which if Im truthful is far more preferable to the cut and dried loyalty + basic skill set = survival.

I'm just sad he died as he was one of my favourite characters

I think you need to leave 2 leaders to hold the line as well. Mordin died for me when I took Miranda and Garrus to the final boss. Also, think about it. Jacob is ex-military, and held a squad command role. Miranda's entire purpose as a squad member is to provide light biotic support and boost you and your other squaddie's weapon damage as a "Cerberus Leader" or "Cerberus Tactician."

You took Garrus with you though, who was one of two squadmates the dev pointed out as being valuable on the Line (the other being Grunt).  I would guess that that is why Mordin died for you.

One other item which might have influence here apart from loyalty and 'class roles' is the upgrades you have for weapons/shields etc. No way for me to prove it but it might have an impact.

I've wondered that too, especially for the personal prototype ones.  I haven't seen anyone say they've had someone die until Hold the Line without it being an obvious reason though, so if those do come into play, they do so by boosting the squadmates' scores during Hold the Line.  I'm not sure how that can be tested though, so to be sure it'll probably have to come down to a dev saying yay or ney, or someone reading the files.

You know... my Shepard is the toughest one of them all. I should be able to send three people to fight the reaper and hold the line myself.

!*#$

On higher difficulties, do we need to leave ALL of our soldiers/heavyhitters with the rear guard to avoid fatalities?

Cause on the first hardcore run I did, I repeated the strategy that I used for my perfect runs on Normal: I had Jacob do escort and took Grunt and Garrus with me to fight the Reaper. However Mordin died (which with I could understand since I sort of saw the logic in my line failing with only one heavy hitter (Zaaed) on the line on a higher difficulty).

But on my second playthrough, I let Mordin return to the ship, and took Grunt and Miranda with me. Unfortuantely Garrus, who seems like the least likely to die in that scenario, somehow managed to bite the dust....

On my 3rd playthrough, I had Mordin escort again, but took Miranda and Jacob, and left Grunt, Garrus, Zaaed + all my other (loyal) mates on the defensive line.... and Garrus still died...

I'm gonna try and redo the mission but leave Jacob, Garrus, Grunt, and Zaaed on the line. THAT has to work, no?

Anyway I took legion and tali to boss and no one died lol

Mordin explains that he has an advantage over Turians, Krogan and Vorcha because people don't consider him a threat until it's to late, that won't help him in a stand-up fight tough as the enemy will consider everyone a threat from start 'til finish...
