I'll admit it up front, i'm a graphics and story person. I know my way around a computer fairly well (enough to build one from parts), but when it comes to software issues of this magnitude... well... *shrug* thats where i pop online and beg all you wonderful, smart, greatly incredibly wise people for help!! =^^=

so... toolset installs fine. just will not run.
the... whatsitcalled? SQL database? is NOT installing.
the only thing i could SEE that looked wrong in the install logfile was the following: "Property(S): WrongPackage = This MSXML6 Service Pack 2 (KB954459) package is not supported on the current processor type."
ACK! Now what?!
(for the record im running on an Intel Core2 Duo processor)

the toolset was one of the major selling points for me so any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. =/.\\=

...and for the record... what the heck IS the SQL database? whats it for and why does the toolset need it?

The SQL database is the repository where the toolset stores designer resources, similar to a filesystem but with a lot more sophistication. The toolset uses one to better keep track of the interrelationships between all the resource types and to allow built-in revision control. So for example if you create a creature and a conversation for it to use when the player interacts with it, the database will know that the conversation "belongs" to the creature and prevents you from accidentally breaking the relationship between them.

Unfortunately there's a known issue with the MSSQL Express installer not playing nice with MSXML6 Service Pack 2. See the following knowledge base article about it:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968749

The workaround suggested on that page is to uninstall MSXML6 and try re-installing the toolset afterward.

i cant uninstall msxml6, its not there, i only see msxml6 parser, and not the thing the solution says i should delete, i deleted that parser anyway, but i still have the problem that while installing it seems to have a problem there, i click "ok" and it installs all other stuff (it even says "finished" on the xml part) and then there is no database :(

THANK YOUUUU BRYAN!!!

The nightmare ended finally, the thing seems to install fine now.

Obviously, the MSXML is a normal windows XP update.. so I guess thousand of people will run into the same issue. :bandit: :D

I too was having this problem with Toolset installation. The toolset wiki didn't really address any of the problems, since I only had one empty Data folder in the toolssql folder. On investigating the issue, it appears that MSXML6 was installed through a windows update, but it looks like M$ stuffed something up and it never installed properly. You can't simply uninstall it from Control Panel.

To resolve my issue, I used the M$ Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to uninstall MSXML6 SP2, and then just ran the DA Toolset Installer again. This got me to the stage of the install that the Wiki talks about, and I was then able to follow the workarounds to get the thing installed on steam.

I hope this helps any other people struggling with this issue.

I've updated the wiki Installation Troubleshooting and Steam Installation Trouble pages with a link to the utility.

This fix worked for me!

Once I removed the MSXML6, and all SQL-related files with the Cleanup Utility from Microsoft, I was finally able to install the Toolset. I blame Windows Service Pack 3 for this issue, because I didn't have a single problem installing the Toolset when I used SP2.

As a sidenote, I also chose both of the "custom" settings when setting up the database for the Toolset to use.
