SQL 2005 sends my computer on an endless boot cycle! HELP!

I had to manually install SQL 2005 because the toolset didn't install it. So about halfway through installing it, my computer randomly rebooted itself and now every time I boot to windows about 1 minute in it reboots itself. Luckily I have a friend who is in IT who helped me get to a previous restored version of windows which is the only reason I am able to type this. Even still, if I try to uninstall SQL 2005 it will reboot itself half way through the uninstall and I cannot get rid of it, even using a third party installer like Revo uninstaller. Does anyone have a solution for this? there was nothing on microsofts website about this problem, I checked.

I have a similar problem. Toolset was installing SQL then suddenly bluescreened and rebooted. Now every time I start up Windows my system blue screens and reboots. Only reason I can type this now is b/c I have a dual boot mac.

Wow, I don't even know where to go with this one.

I have never seen anything like this. My guess is that there is something in SQL Server 2005 doing this, we don't require any reboots to install.

We can start searching for a solution. If anyone else out there has any ideas, feel free to pile in.

I also have this problem! Im on someone elses computer at the moment. Everything was going fine and then during the SQL setup it rebooted. Now it keeps starting up but im only logged in for about 30 seconds before the reboot again...and again...and again. Im searching the net for similar problems with SQL but so far no solutions that will help me.

Im on Windows XP if that helps.

Also on WIndows XP. On a dual boot Mac Pro running in Boot Camp. Never had any issues whatsoever running the game.

Boot into safe mode and review your Windows Event Log. Report back your findings.

Found this

Have you ever had to troubleshoot a Windows XP system that appeared to be stuck in a continuous reboot loop? In this scenario, you can start the system as you normally would and even log on. But within seconds of logging on, the system mysteriously reboots itself. In some cases, you don't even have to log on before the system reboots. If this sounds familiar, you're encountering a feature of Windows XP's Startup and Recovery system. By default, this system specifically configures Windows XP to automatically restart itself after encountering a system failure error. These system failure errors are usually isolated and occur randomly. As such, the best way for the operating system to deal with them is to automatically restart. In most cases, doing so solves the problem. But if the system failure error is more serious and occurs on a regular basis, you'll encounter a continuous reboot loop. However, you can disable the automatic restart behavior. Follow these steps: Press [Windows][Break] to open the System Properties dialog box. On the Advanced tab, click the Settings button in the Startup And Recovery section. In the System Failure section, deselect the Automatically Restart check box, and click OK. To enable the changes, click OK in the System Properties dialog box. This change configures the system to halt after encountering a system failure error, which allows you to investigate the problem error in more detail. You'll then have to manually restart the system. Keep in mind that you'll have to work fast in order to make the change before the system reboots. You may have better luck making the change if you launch the system in Safe Mode.

Still trying.

Yes, I'm also on straight up good old fashioned windows XP. Glad to hear I'm not the only one with this problem. >_< Hope someone can find a solution soon. If the Devs have never heard of this problem that's not a good sign.

Yeah thanks Niea i found that too. However I then realised we already have SP3 since its part of the min system requirements for dragon age. Still trying...

Edit: having said this my computer (now in safe mode) is telling me it IS sp2. I could try getting sp3 but... how would i go about doing that when it keeps rebooting on me?

I found a thread on the net about xp and sql causing reboot problems. It seemed to talk about differences between Service pack 2 and Service pack 3. Are most or all of you people having problems on Service pack 2?

# re: SQL Server 2005 SP3, SQL Server 2005 SP2 CUs, or SQL Server 2008 may cause XP SP2 to restart

I had this same problem when applying SP3 to SQL Server 2005 Dev Edition on an XP SP2 box. I was vexed as to why my system would just reboot any time I tried to modify my SQL installation until I came across this post.

I updated XP to SP3 and then the SQL SP3 installation went through without a hitch.

Thanks! (No thanks to M$)..."

To get rid of the bluescreen press ctrl+alt+del and open the task manager as soon as possible to buy some time.

Then go to the start menu and in execute type in "msconfig"
In MsConfig go to services and deactivate all the SQL services.
Now you can go to control panel...software and uninstall the SQL server from the last piece upward.
Won't help much to run the toolset, but at least windows runs again....

I am on SP2 hmmmm.... and Dragon Age was supposed to only run on SP3? Wow, the game has been running perfectly. Well, I guess I have nothing to lose by upgrading to SP3. I'll let you know if this works.

To those of you experiencing this:
With the reboot, are you getting a warning that windows is about to reboot, followed by a reboot, or is it just doing a black screen "I just died and and turning off" at which point you restart the computer?

Also, could you indicate your OS (XP, Vista, 7) and which OS service pack you have installed?

No warning for me, just black screen - reboot. Althoughhaving turned off the auto reboot function it now goes to BSOD and requires a manual reboot.

Im on XP with sp2 it would seem (though before now i thought i had sp3)

J.O.G. can you type a quick list of the names of the SQL services in menu? I'm looking in MSConfig and I don't see anything that looks like its SQL.

@Alan: If you disabled auto-reboot, you get a a hard blue screen stating something along the lines of "System Failure: Windows Subsystem was closed"

@bigdrip681:

They contained SQL in big letters and had "unknown" as "producer" were 4 of them IIRC.

No warning, it just reboots for me black screen until I disabled autoreboot and now I get a blue screen with an error:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}

The windows subsystem system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0Xc0000005 (0x7c9106c30x00caec24)

The system has been shut down.

Don't know if that will help you any but meh... I'm running native windows Xp on SP2

Hey JOG, i disabled SQL successfully and now have my computer back (yay!) but i cant uninstall SQL server without it doing the reboot thing again (or BSOD in my case as its still got auto reboot disabled)

Reboot in safe mode and uninstall SQL. See if that allows you to reboot in normal mode. Install Service Pack 3. Then install SQL.

If you need to, reboot in safe mode with network support so you can download SP3.

I rebooted in safe mode and did a system restore. Luckily I had a restore point for yesterday. System is stable at the moment. Apparently I only have Service Pack 2 which may or may not be the problem. I'll install that then try the toolset again.

@Vormalon: Same for me, I had to uninstall them part by part starting with the last in the list, one of them said it was still active and needed to be reset or something (translating out of memory from german here). Once this one was uninstalled I could deinstall the main package.

Well, I guess it's time to install SP3...

Oh my god! This happened to me as well and i thought i got a virus!

The best thing to do (if on XP like me) is hold F8 during boot and choose the option "Boot the last time my PC worked basically" (/sarcasm) and it worked fine for me after that.
