Tali (two Drones, really, why not an I WIN button, plus she is the coolest character in both games)
Jack (just in case she gets as cool as her cut-scene)
Mordin (talk about a moral compass, the universe would be a safer place if everyone were dead)
Zaeed (who, after inventing killing, killed more people than were ever born)
Joker (because he deserves to calculate pi for all eternity after unlocking the overlord)

EDIT - I fogot Blasto the Hannar Spectre.... because he does not have time for your solid waste excretions

Assuming we're talking only squaddies from ME1 and ME2:

Garrus, Tali, Legion, Wrex, Grunt...and...toss-up between Miranda and Jack.  Basically, I preferred my VERY alien squaddies to the others, and I hate human males in-game.  'Cept Joker :innocent:

grunt..for his combat skills



Tali...because shes my love in the game.(thats right i did a lizard)



Garrus....for his leader and snipping skills



Samara...her rip you a new one biotic skills



Jack....her swearing helps for comic relief



Legion...its hacking skills are helpful







Joker needs to be the one released into space because at least thane helped...yea joker drove the ship but edi was his savior

(!!!Minor Spoilers!!!)

-Jack (LI and powerful biotic 'bodyguard' which is now completely devoted to my Shep),
-Wrex (possibly one to unite the Krogans and turn them into a more respectable 'peacefull' nation and a powerful weapon against the Reapers, maybe not because of the lack of a fleet),
-Joker (saved my but enough times, have to return the favour + need him to pilot my next ship),
-Tali (important to have a huge influence in the Quarian-Geth thing, might prove essential against Reapers),
-Zaeed (he's another of my skilled and very devoted bodyguards, since the Loyalty mission and I kinda owe him his revenge)
-Miranda (having someone who formerly was a pretty 'important' figure of Cerberus, not to mention her obvious strengths and administrative and leadership capabilities, not really trusting her though)

Wouldn't have enough time left to justify saving them: Chakwas, Mordin, Thane
Legion can be replaced by another Geth platform
Grunt is a tool
Ashley just seems to get more annoying each day (not that much of a reason, but hey, only 6 spots)
Liara has been corrupted
Jacob is cool and all, but too generic, not important enough to sacrifice one of the 6 I chose
Garrus would end up corrupted (again)
Samara is a fanatic
Kelly doesn't have enough obvious skills to justify sacrificing one of the others.

I'm going to need 2 lists, one for plot progression, the other for simple character design affinities.

The important people who should still be alive when ME3 comes around:

1. Ashley/Kaidan -- Alliance veteran, possible envoy, and if anything else, a love interest
2. Liara -- Information broker, possible rival for the Shadow Broker. Also a love interest.
3. Tali -- The only known (and surviving) member of the Quarians who has had access to and has worked in great depth with, not only advanced Geth technology, but the Normandy as well. Also a love interest.
4. Legion -- Responsible for spreading the virus to rewrite the Geth, should the player decide to do so
5. Miranda -- The only member of Cerberus we can keep close, be it to keep tabs on her or to use as an asset in taking down the Illusive man
6. Mordin -- Has the research data necessary to develop a cure to the Krogan genophage (this can be either beneficial or disastrous), should the player decide to keep it.

And finally, the people I want to keep alive, not to mention to see back in ME3, simply because I like them or their background stories:
Liara, Samara, Ashely, Miranda, Legion, Mordin

I'd really like to add Joker to that last list, but he's not a viable squad member.
