Check the codex. Shepard is born in 2154, so he is 31 years old during the events of ME2.

Personally I ignore the timeline thing and play as my 55 year old, shotgun wielding, vanguard charging, grandpa.

How tragic is it that 31 is "older" in the gaming world?  I mean, I'm no old fogey, FFS, I'm 23, but the point stands.  I may have a pretty good bit of accounting knowledge, have some skill with a sidearm (loltexas) and have been in and won a few fights, but I'm not gonna be saving anyone from anything if doing so requires actual experience.

Experience does usually trump youth, seeing that represented, even a little bit, in a game is a nice bit of realism that makes immersion much easier.

He/She is 31 going by the birth date but if it could be less depending on when he/she died and how long it took to be rebuilt so its somewhere between 29-31

Making Shepard early 20s wouldn't have worked unless he started off as a boot Lieutenant in ME1. Thank God they didn't go that route, as some 90 day wonder being in command of the Normandy would make ZERO sense.

Anyone who looks like that at 29 should cut back on the ciggys and get more fresh air. The guy whose face they scanned would have been late 30's.
