YOUR requirements and MY requirements differ greatly, obviously.

A good gamer adapts to the playability of the game they're playing.
A n00b whines about how games 'should be like this' or 'should be like that.

An idiot goes onto the forums and calls people "n00b" for providing honest feedback.
A cloaca thinks that posting "QQ moar" is contributing to a discussion.

By your standards, there are no bad games... and "Get Rich or Die Trying" suffered from being played exclusively by whiners.  I often wonder what people like you get from making asinine comments in forums.  I mean, sure, the anonymity prevents anyone you know from seeing what a complete tool you are, but... whatever, dude.

The thing is...it's something that could EASILY be remedied. The systems are already in place so that they could make the change without an actual patch, and it wouldn't break immersion into the game.

Include it as free DLC through the Cerberus Network. Through this, you could EASILY include updates to the system, such as making the reticule bigger, some kind of auto-seeking probe, make it move faster, etc. These updates could even be purchasable through the Normandy upgrade system.

And no, not EVERYONE hates this mechanic...but I'm positive the VAST majority do. All of the guys at work have complained about it, some said they got so sick of doing it they just ditched and "finished" the game, completely unprepared. So basically...there's a group of guys at my work that will never even actually finish the game...and likely never purchase ME3

Who cares about all the "guys at your work". You're in no position to say that a vast majority dislike the scanning. I find it to be interesting myself, because I love reading the descriptions. It makes me wonder if there are planets like that outside our solar system.

I am sick and tired of people assuming that since they dislike something, A "VAST majority" does as well. You're opinion is just your opinion.

To be fair, the responses to this thread suggest that, in fact, a vast majority dislikes the implementation of scanning.  I think scanning, as an idea, is an improvement, but I think the implementation is flawed.  If the scanning were automated and animated, the player would be much more encouraged to take the 20 seconds that EDI requires to scrub the giant beach ball in space and read the description of the planet in question.  Instead, I find that I approach unexplored planets with a "let's get this over with" attitude and seldom take the time to read the descriptive text.

The descriptions that you like have nothing to do with the scanning mechanic - so far no one (that I am aware of) has actually posted that they like the "scrubbing the beach ball" mechanic (other than one conspicuous troll.)  Some people don't mind it, but there seems to be a general consensus that it is the least fun part of an otherwise very fun game.

I realise that the forum community is a small percentage of the player base, but that does not mean that it is not a representative sample.

I understand all that. However, when posting your opinion. Don't use terms like vast and majority, because to my knowledge no scientific polls have been conducted to support his cliams. Maybe, I am looking into too much.

However, the "guys at work" comment put it over the top for me.

Just click the left trigger rapidly. You can scan a whole planet in like half the time. I'm not sure exactly how it works on PC, but I imagine the principle would be the same.

It probably is the vast maority though.  The people on this forum, I think every review, other forums, heck someone made a rap song about how bad it is.  And I suspect the guys at work comment was to illustrate just how deep the hatred for this mechanic can go.  All evidence points to it being the vast majority.

The Mako was fun at first but then felt like a grind. Scanning was cool the first couple of times and after that it's a freaking grind. Grinds suck. Simple as that.

Totally optional grinds do not bother me.  ME2 scanning grind does not feelp optional at all.

I feel the same way. The scanning mini-game was fun for a while, but quickly turned into a grind. Although that grind was self inflicted to a certain extent it would've been great if the design didn't let it become a bore.

Perhaps the number of planets with minerals as well as the number of probe sites on a planet just needs to be dramatically lowered? Pricing would need to be adjusted downwards too obviously.

As I continually state in these dumb threads,

The responses fro those in this forum make up less than 10-15% of the people who bought and play the game...

THUS:

You really are in the minority....as people rarely post when something is good....and of millions of units shipped and sold, there what....maybe 200 poeple moaning about it lmao...yeah....everyone really hates it!

That's NOT how statistics work Maviarab. Sample size doesn't need to be equal to the total for good data. Accounting for self selection bias as much as possible, there are more than enough people on the forum to get a statistically significant survey.

You can't say that 9 out of 10 people on the forum hate it, but that point doesn't mean anything becuase 1 million people that play weren't included in the sample. With a large enough sample (around 2000 people is a good sample size) the results will closely mirror the majority opinion.

The "Silent Majority" is just a fallacy someone trots out when they can't prove something but want to make it sound like they are right. 5.8 billion people didn't buy ME2, so they don't like it and it's a bad game. The silent majority has spoken.

If you want to berate people who don't like this particular minigame it would help your argument a lot had you pulled out a much smaller percentage. 10-15% is a non-negligible amount of people, FYI.

Maths is hard. Let's go shopping.

If you have a pc, get a high dpi mouse, one with a button that let's you switch between 2 dpi settings. For example, play the game at 800dpi and when you want to scan something, switch to 3200dpi. At 3200dpi i can scan a planet from side to side with a small move of my hand(at 1920x1200 resolution). It makes scanning so much better and easier, there are no words to describe it. So once you "fix" the scanning speed, scanning becomes A LOT better, almost an acceptable game mechanic. Just patch the game and greatly increase scanning speed.

Also remove the "hold right button till carpal tunnel syndrome occur" and just make it togglable. Click right click once to start scanning, click right click again to stop scanning.

PS I use an ikari laser mouse, i picked it because i like its form(i would like it to be a bit bigger though) and because generally it is a great mouse(the photos dont do its plastic surface justice).

It is a wonderful mouse isn't it. No flashy gimmicks, but extremely comfortable. :)

The scanning mechanism is pretty dumb. Whomever designed it is probably somewhat of an imbecile.

I think the scanning Idea is cool. The fact that it's basicly useless is frustraiting. In ME1 you had a quest to collect thing's. wasnt a big purpuse btu just enough to warrent driving your mako around for a cupple extra seconds to go survey some rock and leave. But there were other things you looked for to. ancient relics and cool lit bits of info. Surveying a planet gives none of that. it give you money to buy upgrades basicly.

I think people would jsut be happy if it had more of a purpose. Like finding a prothean artifact that you could have in your quarters. or you find a evidence of battle that opens up a quest to talk to some guy on the citidel who's brother went missing. or you find a prothean data disc that unlocks a new reserch option.

See the diffrence between the mako and scanning is landing on a planet and exploring was interactive. you drove around, maybe raninto some some pirates or thresher maw and got survey things and do quests. Now planet scanning basicly got rid of the interactive and discovery elements. I think the big problem with the mako missions was that every planet was just hills and moutains with some unique lighting and a cool texture.

They seriously upgrade the landing missions with each one having it's own enviroment. thank you bioware for that. but while I dont think we have any hope of them "Fixing" plannet scanning in ME 2 we might help them make ME 3 better than ither of the previous 2 by giving helpfull feedback. and if they are going to patch in fixes or add things to ME 2 I think what we should ask for is for them to add in stuff to explorer while scanning plannets. little things evan if it's just a txt box or a codex entry. a reward for looking around on every planet. In ME one every planet you went to that could be surveyed turned up something or you could land on a planet. why not be the same on ME 2.

Let us find a landing zone on some planets and little trinkets or random nothings on others. and let harvesting be one of the extras.

This thread was basically over when people posted a save game editor and instructions how to edit the ini file, but I'd just like to post my opinion:

Mineral scanning in ME2 (as of 02/17/2010) is the worst mini-game ever in a computer rpg.  Grinding mechanics should have no place at all in any game, let alone a non-mmo.  Mechanics like this are why I avoid playing mmos and many japanese rpgs.   I was disgusted when I saw something like this in a Bioware game.

Aside from that, the design of the mineral scanning seems like it was intentionally made this way to to waste players' time, and increase 'gameplay' length.

As several people in this thread have already stated, what is the crew doing during all this scanning? What is EDI doing during all this scanning? Why wouldn't Shepard assign  some crew to do this task, if the AI couldn't do it in a microsecond?  Scanning as currently implemented has no place in a good game, nor even in terms of the plot.

Hopefully they just do away with random resource gathering altogether in ME3, or allow you to order your crew to do it.  If there must be a minigame, make it a bit higher level, in terms of management.  There are already the hacking/bypassing minigames for people with a hands-on minigame fetish.  It would be more interesting(or just FAR less tedious) to have resource gathering in ME3 be more like the thief stronghold in Baldur's Gate 2, for example, where you order crew members/guild members to go out on a mission to gather the resources, and they succeed/get killed or whatever, and you get a report back later on.  Not only would this be far less aggravating, but it would make more sense from a plot standpoint.  Why would the captain be out there with a shovel, metaphorically speaking, when the crew sits around and chats in the cafeteria?

Kinowek

ps. people playing this on console, you have my sympathy.  Hopefully they add an autoscan button before you all go insane.

The Mako grinds could be avoided but you really can't avoid them in ME2 unless you don't like upgrades so htis a big gripe with the new system.

It doesn't matter how fast it can be or any other thought the mechanism itself is simply not fun and there's just no imaginable way it could be to a normal human. If you want a to read descriptions, why do you need to be spinning the planet at the same time?

I think the EDI or some scrub on your crew does it for you is the best option. Makes you visit each planet and rewards some exploration but doesn't require the player to be so uninvolved in something.

I'll say it again here because this looks like the official "whine about scanning" thread now... of course a basic gameplay mechanic like this shouldn't be patched out of the game, and it's silly to ask for it just because of a personal dislike, but a probe upgrade that increases the mineral yield per launched probe would be enough, really...

After seeing what happened to Killzone 2 when the devs started churning out patch after patch based on complaints on their forums, though, I think it's perfectly reasonable for the BW folks NOT to do something like this based on people here complaining about it. It all but ruined the KZ2 multiplayer, and everytime they patched something, the complaining got worse.

It is  required gmaeplay element but is it a "basic" element. I'd say no. If scanning wasn't in the game and they'd just had more money and you had to buy or find minerals would you have missed it? No. Is there any challenge to it other that fighting off the boredoem, no. You can't "fail".

Where it is a real killer is on replay because scanning once is a whip, doing it over and over is a real beatdown.

Just making the process faster is better but totally eliminting it is still the better option - and that is what it should be, an option. Heck, fi they just made it an option for those who finished the game I'd take that at this point.
