For ME3, make the scanning of planets a simulation like Fable 2's economy. When you visit a planet, you can place a satellite, and then leave. The satellite will scan over time. You can then hire men/companies to dig.

i could dig that.

there are several elements in Mass Effect 2 that i don't especially care for, but scanning is the only thing i've actually grown to hate. it was sort of fun for the first four planets or so, but by the end i ran off to the Endgame without even getting all the upgrades i thought i'd need. at that point i felt i could live happily never scanning another planet. but now on replays i *have* to do it again (and again) to progress my characters properly and get the ship upgrades. this is an awful thorn in the paw of a great game.

The thing with the Mako is the collection/mineral scanning quests were not compulsory. Sure, the option is there for those who want to explore every square metre of an uncharted world, but none of it was forced on you. You could land, do a sidequest if you want, and leave immediately.

The planet scanning on the other hand is intergal to the game. If you don't do it you won't be able to upgrade and prepare fully, possibly resulting in squad deaths and so on.

If you want to speed it up, you could always look for a list of planets rich in one element or another.  I got 13-14k iridium from one planet with only 15 or so probes.  And when you beat the game once, you get 50k of each resources when you start any new game.  On total, I think I might have spent an hour at most scanning, and most of that was surfing the net while i waited until the controller started vibrating.
Note, i only do this because I have mine on the 360.  If I had it on PC, I might be tempeted to 'nudge' my save file in the right direction.

The problem with scanning imho, is that it has no real reward for the player. Maybe if there were some random encounters or valuable loot from them besides minerals it could become more interesting.

Considering how rare money is, I would take back everything bad I said if I could sell excess minerals for credits.  I would even defend the process if they let me then buy minerals WITH credits at something like double the price I get for selling them.

I think you're misunderstanding the concept of software patches. If a system is working as designed, we're not going to patch it. What you're asking for is to change the game, not fix it, and that is not the usual purpose of patches

I think you're misunderstanding something too.
It hurts the hand. Really, no kidding. After a planet I have to stop for a minute or two to stretch my fingers.

So how long before someone sues BioWare because they have hand problems? I'd totally be on that person's side if they did.

While I understand that it might be difficult now (from a developer's point of view) to get rid of scanning altogether there might be ways to improve it:

- scanning is always on (no need to press and hold RMB, only press LMB to launch a probe)

- don't stop the whole scanning process for a few seconds when launching a probe

- make scanning faster, mouse more responsive

- make it possible to rotate the planet with the WASD keys while scanning simultaneously with the mouse

I guess these changes could also be adapted for the controls of the Xbox version. While still not being fun scanning wouldn't be that much of an ordeal this way.

Thanks for the laugh krylo, if only I had known trolling was this easy on these forums.

Ah, the thick, sweet smell of irony.

So here we have krylo justifying his position, putting forth well reasoned arguments in support of his points of contention.  Then we have ryder500, who apparently is a "kid who can do nothing but whine" about krylo's comments in an effort to troll.

Never a dull moment on the forums.

It is annoying. I don't like that I have to spend five to six hours scanning planets in order to upgrade my character.

I depleted 5 complete systems and I have more of every resource than I know what to do with. It really didn't take that long. Credits on the other hand.... Selling resources or better gambling (varren fighting isnt much use for the tiny amounts you can win) would be much appreciated. No doubt credits are limited for a reason though, such as requiring you to buy all the DLC or play the game more than once to purchase all upgrades.

Truly outstanding rant.  Well played, UltimateRC.

To all who passed by the post because of its length, I highly commend you to take 2-3 minutes out of your life and read it.

Thank you.

Also, the fact this thread has more than doubled in volume overnight and the majority of the comments are either 'i agree completely' or 'yeah, scanning ain't that great' should say something to the developer.

Excellent suggestions, each and every one.

I'm no programmer, but to me these seem implementable in a patch.  A patch that would significantly improve the game experience.

By the way . . .

Scanning tends to make me doze off. I can't tell you how many times I've done that while scanning planets. I tend to turn the game off at that point.

I'd really, really like to explore the galaxy and scan for resources a lot more than I do, but the tedium of doing so is just too much. I just want to get back to the core gameplay, which for the most part is terrific.

I talked as if I were superior because I am.

I don't call people gay, faeries, or children for not liking a portion of the game that I enjoy.

I don't go on to further call them idiots and tell them to shut up.

I further don't use lines such as 'hook line and sinker', not to mention that I use proper grammar and spelling most of the time.

All evidence says I'm morally, ethically, and intellectually superior to you, thus I have no problem acting it.

Now, if you feel like perhaps stating your opinion like an adult, and perhaps punctuating a sentence or two, perhaps I will speak with you as though you were an equal.

Hook, line, and sinker!!

Just to clarify my comment on RSI with planet scanning - I had... have.. RSI from before - its a chronic condition from poking away at computers all day - so I am not trying to blame the game for that.

That said, Planet Scanning isn't just boring for me - it physically hurts to do it. I've actually reconfigured my mouse to allow for a sticky right-button, which helps a bit, but its kinda silly that I've had to resort to that.

As many people said with the Mako, mineral gathering in ME1 was very optional - you could easily sell weapons gathered from enemies for more credits anyways.

I really miss parking the Mako up at the top of a mountain about what seems like a kilometer away from the enemy base, and incinerating some synthetic fool with a well placed sniper shot. That, and ramming Geth Armatures at full speed with the Mako.... (!)

... I think I'm one of the few who actually like the scanning mechanic. Hitting a big mineral spike on the oscilloscope gives me a strange sense of joy I can't explain.

However, the reason I don't like scanning anymore than I should is simple: the need to hold down the right click button to initiate the scanning. This forces a player's fingers to stay stretched and rigid for an extended period of time, and with the way you need to move your mouse with the same hand to scan it becomes very painful very quickly. This isn't a problem for the XBox360 due to the way the controllers work, with one hand on the joystick and another one on a button.

IMHO, the best way to remedy the pain initiated with scanning for PC (and if can be, for the 360) is simple: have the scanning activated as a toggle. My suggestion is that once you're in scanning mode, you only need to press the right mouse button once to activate the scanner, which will keep it on until you press it again, which will deactivate it. Given that most players who perform the scan hold their fingers on the right mouse button when scanning anyway, and that the actual challenge of scanning is in finding the location of the anomalies/resources and not in the button pressing, a toggle would ease player's pain when scanning. All they need to do ismove the mouse to search and press the left mouse button to launch probes, all without the pain of holding the right mouse button.

I'm only just starting my exploration part of the game and already was coming post exactly this same thing! Unlike any drastic changes to the system this would actually be really easy to implement coding-wise. So please, make scanning a toggleable mode (if, indeed, you need a non-scanning mode at all?).

Also, from reading some threads it looks like there are no other improvements to scanning than the speedup? I was kinda hoping that later you could develop a scanner with bigger scanning area or some other improvements (autodetect the biggest deposits).... But for now please remove the need to hold the right mouse button asap. Please. :innocent:

I'm not asking for an outright removal...but it needs to be FIXED. Make it move as fast as when your not scanning, a larger area, some form of autodetect...etc. I don't care if it's purchasable upgrades. Just make it NOT ruin an otherwise good game. I finished the original well over a dozen times, doing everything, or at least NEARLY everything. But this...I don't know that I'll even finish this a second time...as I'm now at a part where I have to scan planets...and I don't know that I can justify wasting my free-time on doing something that I find so tedious.

I think that BioWare is generally pretty good about this sort of thing.  When their players tell them something is broken, they often step up and fix it.  First they tell you that it is chiseled into the stone and shall remain thus for all time, amen, then they fix it.  I think we'll see scanning and "bonus" armor helmets both fixed, simply because the players generally want it to be fixed.  This is one of the reasons BioWare is such a successful game complany - they pay attention to what their players want, and take reasonable steps to give it to them.

Yes exactly haha. Scanning is annoying but come on. OP, you make it sound like holding down a button and moving your mouse across the pad a few times broke your wrist and all your computer hardware.

I'm using a nearly 10 year old generic Microsoft optical mouse and it breezed through this stuff no problem. I've had tendinitis before, but it was from gymnastics and bench pressing 250+ pounds, not playing video games.
