Just started my second Mass Effect 2 play-through and I was just wondering if it would be cool to just choose whatever dialogue option I want this time around or should I just stick to all paragon options? In Mass Effect 1 you were forced to do this, otherwise you would've lost Wrex and a lot of other stuff. Would I lose any allies, or Shepard himself for that matter, if I don't stay pure paragon/renegade? What have I got to lose if I don't stay pure paragon/renegade? Thanks.

I've never played ME1, ME2, or any game with a similar good/bad mechanic as any specific side. I don't play as pure anything, I choose responses based on my mood.
Choose whatever responses you want to based on your general attitude and mood and leave it at that. Don't play to be a saint or a jackass, that's just boring.

There's at least one point where two of your allies have a huge argument late in the game, without a decent Paragon score you can potentially lose the loyalty of one of them. AFAIK you can gain it back with careful dialogue before the end of the game, but if you're male, you potentially lose a romance option.
If you get the +100% paragon power for your class it shouldn't be a problem, as each Paragon point you get = 2 from that point forward.(You double your Paragon and renegade scores.)
I'd try to play how you like and send me a PM when you beat the game to let me know how it goes.

You don't need pure, but I would aim for about 2/3rds to 3/4s to one side, or you may have problems with a couple of loyalty checks (not quite Wrex, but the end result can be the same.) I didn't find this to be a major issue, but I tend to play about 3/4s paragon just by choosing what I would choose.

Actually, the only way to get it back is to have a full paragon/renegade bar. Doing so unlocks a dialogue option that restores their loyalty.

ME 2 seems a little bit more harsh about never being able to do actions that don't feed into your paragon or renegade meters, which now directly affect how good you are at using paragon or renegade methods of persuasion. Still, it's possible to do a few Renegade options here and there if you're a paragon, especially if you imported a strongly paragon shepard.

As others have said it's important to have a decently high score one way or the other as there are two instances where two of your team members will have a squabble and without a high enough paragon/renegade score you will lose the loyalty of one and the only way to get it back is then an even more difficult paragon/renegade check for dialogue options.

On my first playthrough I ended up most of the time about 50/50 as far as paragon and renegade go. I was able to past nearly every speach check, including the two conflicts with the crew. The only two I couldn't find an option for one way or the other were during Samara's loyalty mission when I decided to sit down with Mornith without wasting time (I got past the first two checks but never managed the final one. Thankfuly it didn't end the mission.). The other failed check was at the end of Tali's Loyalty mission trying to convince the judges. I still managed to get out of that one by rallying the crowd, I guess because some of the earlier acts I took. I can only guess my good luck with all of these checks was due to the fact that I saved most of the loyalty missions for right before the reaper IFF and had already built up quite a reputation in both directions.
