We already have a thread on homages, but I wanted to highlight a few things that remind me of novels I've read that probably aren't direct references. In fact, the game's writers may not even be familiar with them, but I often find myself musing on unlikely similarities. I was probably the only person in the world who recalled Angels and Insects while watching Mean Girls.
The character of Morrigan reminds me of Dara in the Amber series. She's a mysterious, beautiful woman who becomes the protagonist's lover (ultimately bearing him a child) and at times helps him but for reasons that are her own. I suppose it's a fairly common archetype (very film noir, really), but conceiving a child for its supernatural abilities is a bit less common. I hope DA:O doesn't take the same character arc with her that Zelazny took in the later Amber books, however.
The Werewolf's curse, the reasons for it, and the fact that it could only be broken upon the end of the (unnaturally prolonged) life of the curser reminded me of the curse Brandin of Ygrath laid on Tigana in Tigana (the Guy Gavriel Kay novel).
Things in DA:O that remind you of characters or situations in other works

At times Sten reminded me of Vhailor of Planescape Torment. But Vhailor was a bit more psycho.

The guy at the end of the Urn of Sacred Ashes quest totally reminded me of Gerard Butler's character from 300.

This game, in a whole, kind of reminded me of the Final Fantasy series, mixed with the middle ages, and a lot more plot twists.
