It was stated in a thread on another board that the reason Mordin dies at the "hold the line" section of the game is that success in this area is based on how many "hold your ground" types you have that are loyal. He should live if you have both he and Grunt stay and both are loyal.

Not necessarily true. I had Mordin die in the Hold the Line sequence on two different full loyalty, full upgrade playthroughs and across multiple test runs of the final mission on said playthroughs. Rumors regarding time taken to kill the final boss and unit composition were almost unequivocally proven to be unsubstantiated (though I do admit I may have made an error somehow, it is unlikely). To avoid having Mordin die, simply take him with you to fight the final boss, as Incinerate is a useful skill to have for that segment, or send him back as the escort for the people you rescue. If he's not at the hold the line sequence, he can't die in it.

I sent Thane back with survivors and took Grunt/Tali with me to final battle and Mordin survived just fine.  You might want to make sure you have all the upgrades you can for Mordin.  It might also depend a little on paragon/renegade status.

The only thing that matters for hold the line is loyalty. If you leave the heavy hitters behind (Garrus ,Grunt, Thane, Zaeed) Then everyone should be fine. Little squishy guys like mordin aren't made to stand and fight against waves of enemies :)

Mordin isn't squishy :(  He's just... sensitive.

There is a Omni-Tool for Mordin, maybe researching that could be the answer to your problem...

Nope, it only depends on who you leave behind for hold the line.

Why can't the guy who upgrades my ships system unlock a door with out getting shot. he is loyal and he has his omni tool upgrade. It worries me that the ship will blow up or something because he is clearly not the tech expert I was lead to believe he was.

Well, presumably it's because he gets distracted and starts singing to the door or telling it about interspecies door relations and is shot because his head is in the clouds. Tali and Legion are the only two that can fulfill the Specialist role without dying.

Oh, and Mordin has an extemely high chance of dying if you so happen to leave him behind while you go romping off to defeat the final boss and save the universe. Take him with you or send him back to escort the crew and get him out of the action.
