It all started with my Dungeon Dice and Monster Manuals. My first computer based RPG would have to be Bard's Tale on my Brothers C64.

The first one i saw and only played once for about 10 minutes before the teacher caught me was the Apple II game "Wizardry" around 1983.  the first game i really played was on my Commodore 64 "Telengard", yes i am real old school.  they were fun but to bad "telengard" was programed in BASIC and i re-wrote all the parts that said "B=gold - x" to "B=gold+x". if you want you can play it for free, it is a whooping 37k for ram, just search for telengard and go to "aquest" for a brief history and a free download. which i didn't know the programer had. until i just now looked for it.

I see a lot of people calling Zelda their first RPG...I dunno, Zelda isn't really an RPG. I'd place it it more into the Action/Adventure category, personally.

Anywho, to the OP question, my first was actually Dragon Warrior on the NES. I was six years old when it was released here in the States. Been hooked to RPGs ever since. (For those keeping track, that's 20 years.)

I thought it was Amberstar on the Amiga but after I checked Wikipedia Eye of the Beholder came out before that. But I definitely played both, Amberstar and it's sequel Ambermoon were great.

I remember the good ole C64 days for Phantasie and Balder's but I think I played the original NWN on AOL around that time as well.

Anyone else have the awesome tape drive for the C64. I was ahead of the curve on that one.

I started with paper and pencil rpgs way back when Greyhawk came out, that must have been in the late 70's...but for computer rpgs, I think it was monochrome Wizardry, followed by Bards Tale for C64, then just about all of the SSI D&D series, starting with Pool of Radiance. Somewhere in there i i did the Might and Magic Series as well...*sigh* those days with my trusty pencil and graph paper, mapping out dungeons...and 4 color graphics!

Watched my dad play Ultima a lot before getting into RPGs at a young age. Biggest one I played over and over and sometimes whip out on a boring day would be Baldur's Gate, BG2, Icewind Dale, and IWD2. These kinds of games showed a ton of depth and various play styles based on you and your group. Fantastic.

If Bioware needs any ideas on what they should do next, I would recommend anything in the realm of Faerun using DnD rules and pushing their amazing graphics they showed in Dragon Age: Origins using a birdseye or over the shoulder view for a 5-6 man party based RPG.

I almost played Dungeons and Dragons Online but the realm we were in was no Faerun. Didn't get into it very well.

Zork or one of the oldass Ultimas were probably my first.. but the first RPG I loved?! Wasteland and Bards Tale on the Commodore 64! Follow by the Pool of Radiance, Curse of Azure Bonds and Dragonlance games.

First RPG? Final Fantasy VI (was released as III in NA) and to this day remains my favorite RPG of all time. I don't consider Zelda to be an RPG, otherwise my first would be the original Zelda.

First western RPG was Daggerfall on the PC.

Bard's Tale on a Apple IIGS...yeah that's right....I had graphics AND sound!! I couldnt get interested as much in the IIe and IIc and C64, I had a good steady group I was DMing the DragonLance Modules to, and that was my greatest RPG experience, actually DMing all the way through the those. The High Clerist Tower, OMFG...no computer game has come even close for the "dungeon delve" that was.

Really and truly, if we could get a updated NWN graphics wise, I'd probably go back to playing it. Single player RPGs have never been as good to me as meeting the other player on the road and not knowing...is he RPing a knight in shining armor...or an ruthless killer acting as a knight in shining armor. But I still play them, all the way through SSI, and the past decade of Bioware, and NWN was the best experience for me online, including MMO's.

My first would be the original Legend of Zelda. Which I still have and it plays great. Even though it has dated graphics and game play it still kicks butt.
