My first would be the original Legend of Zelda. Which I still have and it plays great. Even though it has dated graphics and game play it still kicks butt.

I STILL have the music from that game in my head.......

Baldur's Gate, Daggerfall, FFVI, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, or Super Mario RPG. I don't really remember, it was a long time ago. Maybe even Diablo.

The Witcher was my first RPG :)  and Dragon Age is my second, till Witcher I only played adventures, I was never interested in fantasy a RPG's before, I've always been hardcore sci-fi lover, so everything like Lord of the Rings, Final Fantasy and things like that were always faaaaaar away from my interest. But when I got Witcher game and Witcher books, I finally started to understand what people love about fantasy and RPG's and all this stuff, now I am a fan too :D

Ah, my first would have probably been Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss. I can still remember it to this day... scary that it was almost 17 years ago...

My first rpg was Grandia 2 on the Sega Dreamcast. Even after all the games I've played since, it still remains as one of my top favorites.

Pool of Radiance back on the C64. If I recall right, four 5 1/4" floppy disks? That was something like 18 years ago

I also liked Witcher very much - except for the gender bias, and the system requirements which got very heavy towards the end...

I suggest that after DO:A, you should maybe first play Baldur's Gate I (because it is hard to enjoy if you play II first), and then BGII. If you like quests with a bit of twist and imagination, and very interesting NPCs Baldur's Gate shall be very enjoyable indeed. :) This got me into RPGs in the first place.

some people consider the old skool zelda games on the nes to be rpg's. i suppose the very first one from many, many, many countless moons ago was my first. if people want to get to the straight up rpg, the actual alternative first was mario rpg. i hated that game.

First one was Diablo. However this was a crappy grindfest.

First REAL RPG was Baldur's Gate, and I never stopped playing it!

My first ever RPG was Septerra Core. It was definitely unique in every way, strongly influenced by Japanise anime genre, great artwork, and packed with very cool characters. The combat system had borrowed elements from the Final Fantasy series. CGI cutscenes were awesome for it's time and the gameworld was something i haven't seen in any other game since.

After that became Nox, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 5 & 6 and of course Bioware's masterpieces Neverwinter Nights, Kotor, Jade Empire, Mass Effect and Dragon Age.
