Ultima 4.
I fell so hard for this game. Ultima 5 is my favorite game, as well as Ultima 7. Exploring the vast world, day/night cycles, NPCs moving based on the time of the day. All these little things sucked me right into Britannia's history.
What was your first ever RPG?

AD&D. The pen & paper version. That predates 2nd edition.
I don't recall what my first computer RPG was, but it was certainly text-based graphics.

Hmm, I think it was either Diablo 1 or The Elder Scrolls:Arena. Yea I know, kinda sad but mostly I stuck to action and strategy games in my childhood and got into RPGs much later.

No one here played Illusion of Time on the SNES then? That game was beautiful.

Arcanum: of steamworks and magick obscura. Crummy graphics, even for the time, but a fascinating world. Get too magical and you can't go on the trains, too technical and the mages won't let you in their shops. I wish someone would make another game in that sort of setting.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. I know - I was late to the genre. I then went back and tried my hand at NWN and the BG games, but KotOR will always be the hallmark RPG for me. Wow, has it really been almost seven years already?

Ultima 3 : Exodus, for the NES. (first strategy guide, too, which I now get with practically every game I get)

Tunnels and Trolls... Oh you mean CRPG!
The Valley was some code we put into a PET PC back in 1980 or 81, but there wasn't much 'Role' about it - wandered about the ASCII generated wilderness and killed monsters. After that, probably Betrayal at Krondor - still one of the top 3 CRPG's out there.

Well I think it was Planescape: Torment soon followed by Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn.

Zelda was the first RPG I played and liked, but it was Final Fantasy 7 that made me a RPG fan. The first RPG i liked on PC was Baldur's Gate.
