1st RPG was はんじゅくヒーロー a SquareSoft game back in 1988, but didn't really beat it.
1st western RPG was Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday.
I miss the Gold Box engine days... at the time there is no sense of graphic/music just pure story because every game looked the same. It's a good thing.
What was your first ever RPG?

PnP started with D&D's basic set, but I'm not sure what edition I think 8th maybe in 1981.
Computer was SSI's Phantasie in 1986 for the C64.
I bet most of you thought NWN was a new game

Can't exactly remember which one was first, but I got started on all of the old school snes rpg's. Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy III, Breath of Fire. In all those years I never played a PC game. First PC rpg was Oblivion, and I just dug into that a few months ago!

Final Fantasy II on SNES. But if we're counting Legend of Zelda as an RPG then I suppose that was my true first experience.
As an aside, I agree with the previous poster that lauded Arcanum. Highly underrated game, even if its combat system left much to be desired.

Think I bought Might and Magic VI and Baldur's Gate at the same time. I didn't have a clue what the hell I was doing in either, and only after a lot of pain did I get RPG savvy.
Guess I was lucky though because they are both great games and I still play them now.

I played so many games growing up, it's hard to remember what my first one was...I would probably say Dragon Warrior for the NES if you are considering turn based combat, but I remember I wasn't that into it. , but if not, then for sure it was Zelda if that counts. The first one I remember really immersing myself in was Phantasy Star 3 for the Sega Genesis...me and a friend growing up spent all summer playing that game.

Well... Adventure Games probably won't count here, even though they have some similarities. So, the first official title of RPG that I picked up? I think it was Final Fantasy 7.

I think if I would not have ever played Diablo 1, I don't think I would have ever played RPGs. Prior to that I loved action, RTS, simulations games. I had a real bias against fantasy setttings. Diablo changed that tho and ended up playing Planscape: Torment before I ever played Baldur's Gate 2. I loved Arcanum and Deus Ex/2. Strangely, I could never get into the Fallout stories.

The first one I played was The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall. I really would call it playing as much as messing around, I have played much better since then.

This was mine also. It was dumbed down for a younger audience but a good, inspiring game for kids.

Yeay! Fellow Eye of the Beholder folks! /high-five! Although mine may have been the first Final Fantasy for the NES. But I remember EoB well, very very very well. I liked throwing food at kabolds, it was awesome.

Suikoden III. Great game. Then, after obsession over that, my friend recommended Final Fantasy X, and it's been RPG after RPG ever since.

My first RPG was B2 Keep on the Borderlands which came with the D&D Basic Set back in 1980. On a computer I guess the first proper RPG I played was Eye of the Beholder on the Amiga 600.
