I came late to gaming. My first RPG was Morrowind, I was 13. That was the first time I was introduced to gaming as a hobby, but I still had no idea of how much was out there. When Oblivion came out I bought that, and it was my first collectors edition. It also introduced me to the world of modding. But it was only this January, when a friend introduced me to Mass Effect, that I really got into gaming. Since then I've played through KotOR I & II and Fallout 3, and I'll be buying Baldur's Gate I & II as soon as I find somewhere that will stock them (other than Amazon). I'm aiming to eventually play through all the classics.
What was your first ever RPG?

I really can't remember, but one of the earliest must have been Quest for Glory II. I played the first one after the second

Final Fantasy 9, when I was nine. I didn't actually play it myself, I just watched my brother play, but I was amazed all the same.

My first cRPG would have been Ultima VI. I don't remember much of it though, except me being bored pretty quickly. Although.. I also played some Lands of Lore back in the days.. it's all too long ago! Ultima VIII: Pagan is the first one I vividly remember. Loved that games, finished it a few times.

Forgotten Realms / Dragonlance:
SSI Gold Box games on Amiga 500! Curse of the Azure Bonds or Champions of Krynn .
Can't really remember, I think that the 2 series were released around the same time. Pool of Radiance I never got into but the rest of the series: Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades and Pools of Darkness were great fun. As were the trillogy Champions of Krynn, Death Nights of Krynn and The Dark Queen of Krynn.
Adventure / rpg hybride:
Sierra's Hero's Quest (later aka Quest for Glory): So You Want to Be a Hero
Seems back then there were plenty of great rpg, arhh the wait.................

Probably something on NES - though I was too young to really know what an RPG was. To me, I was just beating up Blue Jellies because they looked at me funny.
The first "RPG" where I actually enjoyed a story and, more so, really tried to find out more about the character's was Chrono Trigger. I still do have a fondness for that game.

Ah, ye olde trip down memory lane... always fun.
First RPG was one module or another for DnD; I don't suppose it matter which one it was.... must've been around 1980 or so. Unfortunately, since it was my older brother's module and he was the DM, I ended up dying of the plague in a stable with shocking regularity. When I finally managed to scrounge up the coin I needed to pay off my debt to the stableboy, I encountered my first ever DnD Ogre. Right outside the stable. It was "lost". And hostile.
That little introduction to sadism not only turned me off RPGs, but off the fantasy genre of entertainment in general for quite a long while, but I got back into it with Ultima IV. Don't remember which year that was, but a year or so later I found a copy of Pool of Radiance (8 disks it came on IIRC... 5 1/4" floppies. "Insert Overlay Disk Now".... Good times.) and found it to be a much more agreeable DM than dear ol' bro.
When RPGs essentially died in the middle 90's, I more or less quit with the gaming altogether until Baldur's Gate came out, and now, after another hiatus that vaguely began after I finished ToEE and ended with ME, am back into it. Gotta admit, though, most aren't exactly what I'm looking for; they're good, mind, just... actiony. DA appears to be the only one that's looking more to the style of game that I particularly like.

I believe the first one I tried was Shadows over Riva, but I never got far.
The first one I actually played must've been Diablo, then Diablo II, then BG2, then BG. After that (or concurrently?) some (Z)SNES-RPG's and since then various styles of RPG on various platforms.

I guess technically The lord of the rings game for the xbox would have been my first. It was pretty much final fantasy in the lord of the rings universe. After that Kotor, which is what really got me into RPG's

Well, you should probably specify that you mean the first 'CRPG' rather than the first RPG, as that is how this thread is turning out.
The first CRPG I have completed was Dark Sun: Shattered Lands back in the early to mid 90s (probably around 1993). I may have played other CRPGs before, but this one remains etched into my memory (it was superb). That said, I have been playing pen and paper RPGs before I started with CRPGs.

As for the first one I touched, I would say Legend of Zelda for NES but ... that is more of an action game. After that its either FF6, Fallout 1, or some random sega genesis RPG I can't remember the name for. From that point on I have touched almost all other RPGs as well as going back to play the ones I missed when I was younger.
