I think Super Mario RPG on the SNES was the very first RPG I actually played.
What was your first ever RPG?

AD&D way back when I was a lil tike probably. As to console though I should think an old NES game by the name of Shadowgate fits the bill. For computer, there was a DOS game called Quest for Glory IV: Shadows of Darkness that's what finally got me hooked.

Ultima III: Exodus for the NES. I got it when I was around eight or nine and I did not have a solid grasp of how to really play the game, although I made it about halfway through before the battles got too tough for me, IIRC.. I loved the game, though, and messed around for hours roaming the world map and starving to death.

KROZ. Although I think that's classed as more of an adventure game. Dune maybe, but that was more of a unique genre...
First true RPG...I honestly can't remember. Damn.

Morrowind, I think. My brother practically forced me to try it because he was sure I would enjoy it. And I was sure it would be "too difficult". He was right and I was wrong!

I don't remember my first RPG but the one that got me into the genre was Baldur's Gate II. I was probably 11 when I first played it.

Probably Return to Krondor. I only found out about Betrayal at Krondor a few years later...By then the graphics were too dated for me to play the prequel.
Shortly after I bought Baldur's Gate and that's when my story with Bioware began, eh.

I believe it was an Ultima game on a Commodore 64, I remember that there were dwarvish runes on a cloth map and my friend didn't even know what a rune was, but I had been playing DnD since 76 and had written and translated all the dwarven runes I could find so I translated what they said and we were able to get alot farther into the game. It was quite a revalation!

I'm not young enough to have grown up on computer games, so my first RPGs were all on the original Playstation.
Final Fantasy VII was literally the first one. Up til then I just played 2D fighting/racing games with my brother, but then my mom pointed it out at the rental store one day, and I remember being reluctant--started laughing at the opening cutscene (first time I saw any anime either), then quickly shut up as the game devoured my brain. That was the first game I had to buy a memory card to play. I think it's still my favorite.
I didn't realize there could be more to games than button-mashing...

Ultima III Exodus for the NES. I got it when I was around eight or nine and didn't have the first clue as to how to progress the story, but I played the hell out of the game, mostly wandering around with different strange parties and dying of starvation.
